Title: I don't get it
Post by: Sploops on September 21, 2006, 07:51:45 PM
What don't you get.  What is it that all of your friends/peers seem to love but you just can't see the appeal?  You can't get into it despite really trying to.
I'll give you a couple of things I don't get off the top of my head.
1.) All this indie pop stuff Tom plays, e.g. Ted Leo, Flaming Lips, GBV.  I don't get it. But don't get me wrong, I love so-called "indie Rock."  I love Pavement.  I love Sonic Youth or whatever.  But this jiggly jaggly pop stuff, I don't know... I guess it just doesn't ROCK enough for me.  I don't get it.
2.) Wedgie porn.  What's up with that?  Personally, thongs kinda gross me out.  It's just uncomfortable looking and they're just... way up there.  It's disturbing.  I don't get it.
3.) People calling the internet the internets or the interwebs.  I thought adding a superfluous S to words went out with yo moms.  I don't get it.

So - What don't YOU get?

I can tell you why I call the "internet" the "internets." See, Bush coined the term "internets" during that Town Hall debate thingamajig. I was already pretty well drunk due to the Talking Points drinking game. I laughed so hard I vomited.

I usually talk about how a website is on "one of the internets." It amuses me.

I'll tell you what I don't get. I don't get cell phones. I leave my house occasionally so I don't have to talk to people. It's awesome. Ugh. I have one for emergency usage only, not to chat with people while on the train. Hi, that's what books and magazines are for. For reading on on public transportation. Duh.

While I'm on it, another internet thing I don't get - Lame internet humor.  It eats it's own tail and echoes throughout the net for months and months, like a "meme" if you will. Whatever that it is.  But usually the trend will eventual die. Example: Chuck Norris - I think that one has run it's course.
But the perennial favorites that never seem to go out of style - Robots pirates ninjas and monkeys or robot ninja pirate monkeys or any other combination of it.  Huh?  Is merely injecting the word ninja into something funny?  I don't get it.

I came home late one night and my cat was in the process of doing a mob-style hit on a gigantic bumblebee and I asked her "Hey, what are you doing there!" and she said "mind your own bees whacks."

Also, bring back the Rockford Files song, please, I miss it.

Because people like me have small feet and can rock those shoes. Mwa ha ha.

I don't get platform flip-flops. No sirree.

I don't get how Superboy Prime can PUNCH time and bring back Jason Todd. Boo, DC comics. BOO, I say. Although I must admit, I would like to see all three little birds start up a Birds of Prey-esque operation, only a little more violent and crazed.

Prime can punch anything. He once punched god, but then it turned out later it was actually just Batman DRESSED UP as God, from a different Earth. Also, Batman from a different planet turned out to be Wonder Girl, but then it was a clone of Wonder Girl mixed with Batman.

I don't dislike alternate Earth storylines, per se. I love Cable & Deadpool, for example. Ooh, and Cartoon Network's old Justice League? The Justice Lords arc ruled. And I go apeshit over Elseworlds stories. Why, yes, I bought the whole Red Son line of action figures.

I wish I had time for comics now that I have money for comics, as, when I was younger, I had no money for comics, but more than enough time.

Someday I'll be making comics, and then I'll have time for comics, and money for comics. And I won't have to pay income taxes for comics. I hope you like comics about cowboys and messiahs and mythology and wandering and allusions to The Song Of Roland, because boy-howdy.

Also, I was making a joke more on how Alternate Earth's are the ad-hoc retcon of the DC Universe. I don't read comics, only every once in a while do I read a couple in the store or in our library, which luckily stocks some trade paperbacks. But whenever I go online to read up on what's been happening, I'm always stunned by how many times they retcon a good idea with a HORRIBLE HORRIBLE idea, and then it fails, and they re-retcon it to something else because of hypnotism or something. Alternate Earth can be good stuff.

Also, Deadpool  ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) 8)

- Ditto on Nic Harcourt. Am I missing something here? Why does every "intelligent" person i know (outside of WFMU listening circles, of course) think that this guy is the second coming of John Peel? My co-worker listens to "Morning Becomes Eclectic" every damn day (without headphones, of course), and he plays the most generic, safe, self-consciously "hip" upper-middle-class pablum 90% of the time.  Anything that purports itself as being "eclectic" is almost invariably NOT eclectic, and certainly highly uninteresting. So what's the appeal of this dork?

- KCRW. See above. And besides, how can a station claim to be "listener supported" when I always hear bumpers for beer and car companies in between breaks?

- Coffee...and hot drinks in general. If I want hot liquids in my mouth, I'd rather have soup.

- Text-messaging. How do people have actual conversations using that annoying "T9" keypad crap?

- "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius". I like McSweeney's. And I like the idea of Dave Eggers. But I don't like this book. I might be tainted because at 7 years old, I had to experience the suffering and prolonged death of my mother from lung cancer, but still, I fail to see the appeal of this book even from a technical standpoint.

- Messenger bags.

- Square-toed shoes.

- Frank Kozik. I collect gigposters, and i like comic-style art, but I've never found Kozik's work to be anything but amateurish and contrived. His bad typography especially (and not "good" bad, like Art Chantry or something), just kills me.

- People who talk on cellphones like it's a conch-shell. Maybe it's a regional thing, but in my town, lots of people hold the earpiece up to thier ear, like normal, when they're listening to the caller, but when they talk back to them, they pull the earpiece OFF thier ear, and hold the phone in front of thier face and mouth. What the fuck is that all about? It looks completely stupid. Does this trend have origins from some hiphop video or something?

Oh god, yes. I know exactly what you're talking about. Hello, they can hear you just fine without you pulling the phone off your ear and sticking your mouth right on the earpiece. Jesus.
Title: THE NEW ED ANGER: My list: part 1 of the comprehensive "I don't get it"
Post by: Richard_From_CHI on October 09, 2006, 12:25:56 PM
Part 1 of 245

1) Reality TV, why does anyone f-ing care. And why has it gone on so so long. I don't get it.

2) The King of Queens. It's like a sad and lame 8th generation copy of the Honeymooners, and I wasn't wild about the first one. I don't get it.

3) "Diddy" Why does anyone care what the stupid arrogant and needlessly successful jackass has to say, he wasn't really even a good hip hip producer.  I don't get it.

4) Flip-flops, I know this was mentioned before, but someone please make this go away. I don't get it.

5) Leather pants, NO ONE, BUT NO ONE, LOOKS GOOD IN LEATHER PANTS, no no not even Jim Morrison, he still looked like an idiot. I don't get it.

6) Fur Coats, c'mon people you are spending thousands to look like a wookie, and you are wearing the skins of tortured ferrets for God's sake. I don't get it.

7) Nu Metal. So so boring, so so sad. If you want metal listen to Slayer, or Sabbath or somethng decent. Are we out of good ideas? I don't get it.

8) Paris Hilton, look people if we ignore her she will wither and die. I don't get it. I don't get it.

9) Alternative future universe storylines in comics, Marvel AND DC are so guilty of this, "No seriously we were bring in this guy who is Scott and Jean's kids from a future reality, it'll be great". I shouldn't need a chart and a 10,000 word treatise to read the x-men, stop oh-god please stop. I don't get it. I don't get it.

10) A sense of entitlement. As a public interest lawyer I witness this a lot from young white people, I am regularly stunned at how pissed off they get that they will have to wait a few hours to see a free lawyer. I had a similar experience when I was teaching undergrad students who were unable to comprehend that I was not obligated to do whatever they wanted. Was I that annoying at 20? I hope not.  I don't get it. I don't get it.

11) Why people other than Tom use Tom's special phone number.  I don't get it.

12) "Furries" Being in the arts and living in a large city AND at one point in my life spending lots of time with tattoo artists, I have seen a lot of weird stuff, some off which I not only didn't get but didn't understand, but is it true that there are people who get off on dressing up as furry animals? Wow. I don't get it.

13) Ikea  I don't get it. I go there, I hate it more than anywhere else on earth because they sell cheap shelves and whatnot, but it is a nightmare. So for my own stupidity and inability to avoid inflicting that uch pain upon myself... I don't get it.

14) Oak Park's parking regulations, no one cares about this but me. You mean I am spending THAT MUCH in taxes and I can't park my damn car on the street without getting a 30 dollar ticket!!! What!!!  I don't get it.

more to come. I am the new Ed Anger.

1. Anyone who still thinks heroin is cool. Can't you morons die off, like the Shakers?

2. The revolutionary potential of MySpace as a promotional tool. Sure, I like going through everyone's baseball card collection and realizing I have the cutest, funniest pals, but a huckster is a huckster is a huckster. So far, it's created Dane Cook, a few identity thieves and tons of loathsome California kiddie-punk.

3. Overpaid CEOs. I'm not asking anyone to throw a trashcan through a Starbucks storefront, but why isn't there more of an outcry about the all-consuming greed at the top of the business food chain, especially when everyone else is worse and worse off? Is everything going to be fine until these assholes repo your house? For every overpaid CEO, a rapper goes hungry.

4. People who still get "it's," "its," "effect" and "affect" wrong, again and again.

Holier-than-thou because I drink soy milk and shop at Trader Joe's.  I also talk really loud on the phone so everyone knows how awesome my life is!  Ewe, you eat McDonalds and drink coffee?!  I just ate a banana and drank chai tea!  I'm cultured! I win!

Fuckin' hell yes.

Generally these same people are found listening to KCRW, which makes me hate them all the more.

To be fair, he was on our football team.

similarly, in the myspace not-getting vein: Anyone over 11 years old that can actually get "conned" over the internet.  Seriously.  Come on, I was like 12 when chat rooms were invented, and the first thing we realized was that at 50% of the users were perverts, and 25% were just wretched scum.  The internet's bigger now, but you still have to employ some kind of smarts, people.  You don't just follow a trenchcoated pervert into a dark alley and then act surprised when it's not a literal snickers bar he wants to give you.  (I sound like a shock jock all of the sudden)  I DON'T GET IT.

I don't like it. I love it.

I do understand why it might not be widely appreciated, though, as a lot of the comedy (yes, comedy) is a goof on Rhode Island (I grew up there, Seth McFarlane went to RISD). The accents are dead-on, the pacing is breakneck, and there are as many sly RI references as there are the more obvious pop culture ones. The newscasters in particular are frighteningly not far from reality there.

Sploops -

Just curious - what music should I be playing from 'today'?

Not judging - I just want to know your tastes...

Tom.
First I'd like to qualify that I do in fact like a lot of what you play.  Stuff like that 70's french proto-metal comp. released on Sam Seder's label, Minutemen, early Rolling Stones, The Fall, etc.

But music from today?  To be honest I'm usually about 5 years behind in rock music because I almost exclusively buy used records as I am border-line poor.  And when I do buy new stuff it's that noise/experimental garbage that you probably have no interest in.  Like some of my most recentest 'brand new' puchases were by Merzbow, Carlos Giffoni, Hair Police, Daniel Menche, KK.Null and Emil Beaulieau.

I wouldn't presume to tell you what to play but a little more heavy-psych would be great - the likes of High Rise, Mainliner, Gravitar, Fushitsusha, Vocokesh, Spacemen 3, etc.  But none of that is new; infact I think all of those bands are now defunct.  So I'm pretty useless as far as recommending any new rock music, sorry.

I have to disagree about Family Guy getting the accents right. The Peter and Lois characters are the only ones who even seem to attempt it, and are about a 4/10 as far as authenticity. It's "Pah-tucket", not "Paw-tucket" for instance. I do give the show some props though for the little shout-outs that only natives might catch, though.

What city/town are you from Tim K.? Warwick, born and raised, over here.

Sploops, I agree.  I don't get the jiggly jaggly stuff like the flaming lips, GBV, etc. either, but Tom has spun some pretty hot jams over the years, like Chico Magnetic, portastatic, the black lips, bent wind, the thermals, the leather uppers, the reigning sound, and on and on... and let's not forget the unexpected gems by ELO, BeeGees.  I think Tom has actually played High Rise and Mainliner.

I listen to a lot of noise garbage too, like Wolfeyes, Hairpolice, Runzulstern & Gurgelstock. That stuff is cool but some of the pieces may be too long for Tom's format.  I actually like a lot of different stuff, not abba to zappa, mind you, but for a confirmed Elton John hater, I surprised myself by totally getting into tiny dancer whilst pleasure skating yesterday afternoon at my local ice rink.  I've recently been listening to early tape music, astounding.

One thing I have to say about Tom, though, is that he has an uncanny knack for choosing the one, and often, only decent track off of a record, at times sending me on wild goose chases.  And sometimes he'll play a song that's unrecognizable from a band I'm familiar with, which is cool - can't think of an example.

The Hold Steady.  I don't get it.  They sound ok to me, at best.  The guy's voice is near-unlistenable to me.  And why is all the hype around them that they're like some bar band/third-rate Springsteen and thus "authentic" rock n roll?  Who cares?  Just about every band I've heard on In the Red Records crushes them.

Boys and Girls in America is the best album of 2006.  I don't get it: Bruce Springsteen.  Passable ear candy.  Just like that first Black Flag single.

Oh, so you have a Warwick accent.  Kidding. I grew up in Newport, lived for three years in the South County area (URI undergrad). No I didn't take a yacht to school. I'm in Boston now.

There are variations, as tiny as the state is. I've never heard Lois say "Cranston" but I think she's a dead ringer. But maybe the years spent in Boston have dulled me ear to it.

I don't get it.  Why would anyone pay $150,000 for a record?  That's way too much.  It's not even a regular LP.  It's an acetate which means the sound quality degrades easily.  I mean, yeesh, it already has a number of scratches and skips on it.  I don't get it.

All good points, Fletcher.  I was listening to parts of said record on-line earlier today and some versions of songs we all know and love aren't even the same.  One more reason it is overpriced (lol).

You misunderstand, Jane:  I was referring to the general sense of mystification that the world inspires in me.

Seinfeld.

I hate the characters, they are mean spirited jerks who aren't funny, and at best the show is a deeply tired remake of The Jack Benny Show which actually was funny. Every time it is on I feel like I am chewing gum that has long lost its flavor.

The laugh ratio is so so low.

- KCRW. See above. And besides, how can a station claim to be "listener supported" when I always hear bumpers for beer and car companies in between breaks?

Oh seriously, the KCRW credit card really left me laughing. I mean when I'm driving around Southern California and I can't get KPBS or KPCC yea I'll try the KCRW, but it's got to be the most commercial "non-commercial" station out there.

As for text messaging I aggree, doing it in English is odd and slow. In Japanese however, it's lot faster.

I was listening to the new LCD Soundsystem today. I don't get the hoo-hah over him.
