I was listening to the Best show, dated 11/27/01, with an interview with Michael Azerrad, author of "This Band Could Be Your Life". Tom played some of the bands from the book, and one band that I just don't get is Beat Happening. I love the Minutemen, and the rest of the bands mentioned in that book.

Beat Happening. I don't get.

Family Guy: I don't get it.  (see my myspace group: Family Guy Isn't Funny)

similarly, in the myspace not-getting vein: Anyone over 11 years old that can actually get "conned" over the internet.  Seriously.  Come on, I was like 12 when chat rooms were invented, and the first thing we realized was that at 50% of the users were perverts, and 25% were just wretched scum.  The internet's bigger now, but you still have to employ some kind of smarts, people.  You don't just follow a trenchcoated pervert into a dark alley and then act surprised when it's not a literal snickers bar he wants to give you.  (I sound like a shock jock all of the sudden)  I DON'T GET IT.

Yeah. I'm glad Seth McFarland isn't a 419 scammer, because he seems to have fooled almost everyone. I guess the decline of the Simpsons convinced 18-35 year-old dudes that that "fast-paced, tasteless surrealism" is the same thing as "comedy."

I don't get all the Family Guy hate.
I know it's incredibly formulaic but it still makes me laugh.

I don't love it, but I don't hate it either. And I do know watching Brian the dog dress up in a banana costume and sing "It's peanut butter jelly time, it's peanut butter jelly time, peanutbutterjelly peanutbutterjelly, peanutbutterjelly with a baseball bat" made me laugh. Awwww. He was trying to cheer up Peter.

I don't like it. I love it.

I do understand why it might not be widely appreciated, though, as a lot of the comedy (yes, comedy) is a goof on Rhode Island (I grew up there, Seth McFarlane went to RISD). The accents are dead-on, the pacing is breakneck, and there are as many sly RI references as there are the more obvious pop culture ones. The newscasters in particular are frighteningly not far from reality there.

Sploops -

Just curious - what music should I be playing from 'today'?

Not judging - I just want to know your tastes...

Tom.
First I'd like to qualify that I do in fact like a lot of what you play.  Stuff like that 70's french proto-metal comp. released on Sam Seder's label, Minutemen, early Rolling Stones, The Fall, etc.

But music from today?  To be honest I'm usually about 5 years behind in rock music because I almost exclusively buy used records as I am border-line poor.  And when I do buy new stuff it's that noise/experimental garbage that you probably have no interest in.  Like some of my most recentest 'brand new' puchases were by Merzbow, Carlos Giffoni, Hair Police, Daniel Menche, KK.Null and Emil Beaulieau.

I wouldn't presume to tell you what to play but a little more heavy-psych would be great - the likes of High Rise, Mainliner, Gravitar, Fushitsusha, Vocokesh, Spacemen 3, etc.  But none of that is new; infact I think all of those bands are now defunct.  So I'm pretty useless as far as recommending any new rock music, sorry.

I have to disagree about Family Guy getting the accents right. The Peter and Lois characters are the only ones who even seem to attempt it, and are about a 4/10 as far as authenticity. It's "Pah-tucket", not "Paw-tucket" for instance. I do give the show some props though for the little shout-outs that only natives might catch, though.

What city/town are you from Tim K.? Warwick, born and raised, over here.

Sploops, I agree.  I don't get the jiggly jaggly stuff like the flaming lips, GBV, etc. either, but Tom has spun some pretty hot jams over the years, like Chico Magnetic, portastatic, the black lips, bent wind, the thermals, the leather uppers, the reigning sound, and on and on... and let's not forget the unexpected gems by ELO, BeeGees.  I think Tom has actually played High Rise and Mainliner.

I listen to a lot of noise garbage too, like Wolfeyes, Hairpolice, Runzulstern & Gurgelstock. That stuff is cool but some of the pieces may be too long for Tom's format.  I actually like a lot of different stuff, not abba to zappa, mind you, but for a confirmed Elton John hater, I surprised myself by totally getting into tiny dancer whilst pleasure skating yesterday afternoon at my local ice rink.  I've recently been listening to early tape music, astounding.

One thing I have to say about Tom, though, is that he has an uncanny knack for choosing the one, and often, only decent track off of a record, at times sending me on wild goose chases.  And sometimes he'll play a song that's unrecognizable from a band I'm familiar with, which is cool - can't think of an example.

The Hold Steady.  I don't get it.  They sound ok to me, at best.  The guy's voice is near-unlistenable to me.  And why is all the hype around them that they're like some bar band/third-rate Springsteen and thus "authentic" rock n roll?  Who cares?  Just about every band I've heard on In the Red Records crushes them.
