haha yeah, it's goin pretty well! I was a BIG snacker even before cutting out the smokes... but I can't say the absence of cigs hasn't made me snack a little* more than usual.

And yes, Andy, that delicious confection is indeed a pizza bagel.

*I am constantly eating.

(http://www.dwlz.com/Graphics/40pack_sugarstix3.jpg) is a fine product I know a certain P.B.R. could appreciate.

Speaking of P.B.R. (http://adweek.blogs.com/photos/uncategorized/pabst_1.jpg)  Snacks can be liquid!

Actually I'm more of a  (http://www.keystonebeverages.com/schlitz.jpg) man myself.  Set it on the stove for few minutes until it's nice and warm.  Mmm!  Mmm!

It's fun talking with pictures!

The "mozzarella" "sticks" are a guilty pleasure, like cheez doodles, but much worse in every way.  I have to cop to the crappiest thing I've eaten more than once in the past year, because almost everything else I put into my body (except coffee and alcohol and the occasional hoagie) is pretty healthy.  I get them at Rutgers, and they're better than the grease trucks, but that's about all I can say for them.

Sardines are worth a few bucks to try - they're pretty salty, fishy, and oily, though they have Omega 3 fatty acids in them and tend to be low in mercury due to their small size, so they're relatively good for you.  I would suggest splurging on the fancy imported kind.

I'm obsessed with Jennifer's Homemade Breadsticks (http://www.jennifershomemade.com/breadsticks_original.htm). It's a local company, but her stuff is available at your Whole Foods, Wild Oats, and Fresh Markets  throughout the country. Plus, they donate scads of money and extra food to the Daily Bread Food Bank in South Florida.

I'm also addicted to this:

Oh, I almost feel guilty for posting this, but I just made a dangerous and delicious discovery.  You see, over the weekend I made myself good old-fashioned fish and chips, diverging from my usual practice of pan-frying breaded fish and instead deep-frying battered fish.  There was a little batter left over, so I fried it up.  It was nummy.  So, just now, having a yen for junk food yet finding myself with none in the house, I decided to mix up some batter--just flour, salt, club soda, and seasonings (I used granulated onion, granulated garlic, homemade curry powder, thyme, and basil)--and fry it up.  SO GOOD!  I think next time--and, oh yes, there will be a next time--I'll try putting some cheese in the batter.  The result, I suspect, will be the best cheese puffs ever.

Oh, this is very, very bad.

Post by: Gilly on February 06, 2008, 06:32:22 PM
I was infatuated with deep-frying food for a few months. I don't think I can ever eat deep fried walleye or cheese curds again- or jalapenos. Well, maybe cheese curds but I'll leave that for the state fair.

But, deep fried fish is pretty dang good. It's hard to find good fish at restaurants around Minneapolis. It's either too much batter where all you taste is the batter or really bland. There's a place that used to serve great halibut on the cheap but they switched to haddock instead and raised the prices so I don't go there much anymore. I have to get an ice house so I can get good fish in the wintertime.

But, see, the beauty (and evil) of this is that it's just the batter.  The prep time is virtually nil.

You'd like the batter I described, Gilly.  It's very light (it's the egglessness, I think), and you can flavor it any way you want.  It makes beautiful onion rings, too (I tried those over the summer).  I've got to try other vegetables sometime.

Still, for sheer junk, it'll be the batter alone for me.

What seasonings do you put in? I don't think I've ever made an eggless batter.

Post by: Sarah on February 06, 2008, 06:54:39 PM
(Good thing I'm listening to Seven Second Delay right now so I can answer immediately.)  Well, on Sunday I put in a little curry powder (inspired by something Gordon Ramsay recommended during the last episode of the English Kitchen Nightmares), some fresh thyme and winter savory (sage would be good, too), salt, pepper, and a trace of granulated onion and garlic.  You just mix the flour with the seasonings and add club soda (or beer) till the batter is the right consistency.  It's so much better than batter made with eggs!  Very light and very crispy.

Sounds good, I'll have to try that. My dad and I are talking about going ice fishing sometime in the next month so if we catch anything I'll use that recipe.

Now that I think of it I use an eggless batter all the time when I'm lazy and just use Shore Lunch.

Still sold in packages that make you think it's been on the shelf since 1972. It's sold at most big box grocery stores around here. It's actually really good for a fast breading. We use it at the cabin a lot for a fast lunch.

Aha.  I'm a breading snob (use only crumbs made from my own homemade bread), so I wouldn't have noticed it even if it were in my teeny, tiny grocery store (which it probably isn't).

Wow, i'm surprised that there's so much love for wasabi peas here! We'd eat those as kids at school back in the 70s and 80s, and they always grossed out our non-local classmates and teachers.

Nowadays, those things make me do the Bathroom Bop within 10 minutes of eating them

More stuff that make me Beat on the Toilet Bowl, but I can seriously eat an entire can of these in one sitting:

Hawaiian Hurricane popcorn. Possibly one of the worst concoctions of ingredients that you can subject your temple of a body with (microwave buttered popcorn, mixed with japanese soysauce flavored rice crackers, sour-cream seasoning, and japanese Furikake (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furikake) seasoning), but GODDAMN, is it ever good! They now make Korean BBQ and Thai curry flavors, but the original "Hurricane" is still the best.

In high school, when I would have to stay hours after class everyday to work on our high school newspaper, I ate a lot of these:

And drank a lot of this:

Sadly, my taste in snacks is about the same, four years later. I go to a school full of tyrannical, organic-type foodies who make a point of telling me when something I'm eating is unhealthy, so at least part of me eats this kind of stuff out of spite.

Ok so I'm on somewhat of a diet so I can drop a little excess weight (nothing crazy) and I'm trying to eat some healthier snacks. I hear High Fiber and High Protein are good snacks to go with. (In addition to grapefruits which I seem to love laterly)

My new favorite thing are these RyKrisp Sesame crackers which are pretty large. I can eat 6 of them with that spreadable low fat cheese stuff and it's very tasty and also extremely high in fiber and other good stuff. (http://www.thedailyplate.com/nutrition-calories/food/ry-krisp/sesame-ry-krisp)

Also, believe it or not these things are really awesome. I don't usually like any of the "bars" that are so popular recently:

Did you know that coffee has essentially no calories? Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

I refuse to believe that the Clamato and Beer combination is bad.  Down here we call it a "red draw".  Light beer and tomato juice is a match made in heaven, if you like the flavor of tomato juice.

What ever happened to Mr. Phipp's Pretzel Chips, anyway? Seems like we've abandoned trying to push the boundaries of the shape in which pretzels can be eaten.

I recently had the opportunity to sample Town House FlipSideS, which the box would have you believe is a pretzel on one side and a cracker on the other.

It was a little disappointing that they aren't so clearly and evenly split along the pretzel/cracker line, but it is more scientifically impressive that they appear to be actual pretzel-cracker hybrids, as if they've successfully mated a pretzel and a cracker instead of just gluing a cracker and pretzel back-to-back, which I could probably do on my own if I had to.

I don't really feel qualified to judge them on a snack level since I mostly found myself wondering whether the Keebler Labs people not only asked "can we genetically combine a pretzel and a cracker?" but also asked "should we genetically combine a pretzel and a cracker?"

Seriously though, I am now on my second round of frequenting Chipotle every 2 or 3 days.  I did this a lot in the summer of '06, stopped going, and am now doing it again lately.  That's bad, right?

it's pretty bad. i'm not going to lie to you, fido. i think you can take it.

they use white rice. i mean. that's a travesty.

i really like the lundberg brown rice cakes lately, and of course, a square or two of:

What is this Chipotle?  Some kind of game park where you can bring down your own kill and call it supper?

Oh Joanna, white rice is the least of their sins.

Sarah, Chipotle is a kind of nuevo-Mexican restaurant chain that has burritos, tacos, and taco salads as an afterthought.  It's always quick, so it is very tempting to me.  It's also kind of like crack to me.

I WILL kick this Chipotle habit, as soon as my Photoshop class is over (which is actually tonight).

What's going on in my mind?!?  It must be SHARK WEEK!

Yes, I'd already confirmed this via the Google.  I just question the similarity between burritos and young, freshly eviscerated gazelle.

If you were to visit Chipotle, the connection might become obvious.

Actually, those were separate thoughts that shouldn't, ideally, have appeared in the same message.

These are ridiculously good. I try to have them in the house as infrequently as possible:
