Is anyone else watching this? I was worried going in (my boy Sepinwall ripped it, as did the NYTimes), but I thought the first two episodes were awesome.
-
I'm looking forward to it. I read some reviews that gave it backhanded compliments, like that it's good, but it's just a prestige/vanity project. That kind of bad review makes me just want to see something more, because it sound more like axe-grinding than an honest assessment.
It is kind of weird to see Pig Virus as John Adams, though.
-
I'll ON DEMAND IT later this week. Since this is HBO, is there a scene where Adams becomes the first person ever to see a therapist?
-
I thought the first two were excellent.
-
It is kind of weird to see Harvey Pekar as John Adams, though.

My dad's a fan.
-
I hear they've pretty much completely written Tom Paine out of the "story" (history?), though - what up with that??
-
He has a bit part!
More John Hancock, please. He is foxy.
I want his Hancock. In my Virginia. Yes, I'm ashamed of myself.
-
He has a bit part!
A bit part?? Ouch - that poor Tom Paine has truly not gotten his due. Home-nut had more than a bit part, to say the least...
-
I worked with a guy who was an extra on this series.
Very much into war reenactments. I don't have HBO but let me know if anyone sees him.
Dark hair, scruffy beard, very olde tyme hat and maybe holding a musket.
Oh, and his name is Sal. So if you hear anyone say: "Hey, Sal?! I can't on the file server again."
Then that's probably him.
-
Well they do mention "Common Sense" and the book talks about how Adams bought two copies of it, one for himself and one to send to his wife. Adams was a big fan of Paine's early on, but soured on him later in life and ended up denouncing him while president.
I think the reason Paine doesn't have a bigger part is because they simply never crossed paths too often.
-
It took a third viewing to catch it, but Thomas Paine did appear in the first episode. He was in the scene following the trial where Sam Adams and other Sons of Liberty were trying to convince John Adams to join the Massachusetts Council.
-
Like I said, a bit part!

Sorry, I forgot the rest of your post after reading your toilet-mouthed puns. I was trying to think of a witty follow-up. Ready?
"Well you know what they say about the size of a man's signature..."
Thank you good night.

I don't want to spoil too much, but Paine does come up in a later episode as the prospect of the 1796 election begins to loom. Adams asks Thomas Pinckney who he thinks might join Jefferson on a Democratic-Republican ticket and Pinckney, apparently ignoring the fact that he was jailed in France at the time, answers: "My prediction? Paine!"
Also, Thomas Pinckney is played by Mr. T in the mini-series.
-
I'm excited to see the part when they enroll Thomas Paine into the Revolutionary army just to call him "Major Paine." That happened, right? Well, it happened in my awesome historical fan fiction version.
I'm obsessed with this miniseries. I think it's terrible and boring, but I can't stop watching it. My whole thing with it is that I liked it better when it was a musical called "1776."
"John, you're obnoxious and disliked!"

Wes, I have no words nor emoticons to express how this post makes me feel. This emoticon will suffice: :-* :-* :-*
I feel the same way about Ms Klausner's post above mine. Please share more broadway reviews and historical fan fiction (as long as it's not slash fiction involving the weird looking guy from New York and anyone else. Ew.)
I hope Button Gwinnett has a role in this. He's my favorite founding father. If you don't know what he looks like, I suggest imagining what a man named Button looks like. Then search for Button Gwinnett via Google Image search. You may be surprised!
George Washington was woefully miscast. I hated David Morse in the promos for Hack:

I hate his face!

Anyone else get a lump in their throat when they showed the widow of Crispus Attucks?
-
Dreamcasting!
George Washington - Super Dave
John Adams - Van Morrison
Benjamin Franklin - Andy Milonakis

The Wire thread should just be "Whatever HBO is showing" thread.
Sorry, had to say it. You guys are obsessed with everything Home Box Office. ;D

Where are the 57 Arliss topics!!!

I can't wait to debate the merits of Dream On, now there is a show that holds up really well.

Wait... hold on... she's still alive? :o

Hey man, the shows *can be* the best stuff on Television. Maybe not now but definitely in the past.
I heart my HBO. :-* :-* :-* :-*

I don't understand anything that's been said in this thread, but I love it.

I hope Button Gwinnett has a role in this.
Button Gwinnett? That ain't no founding father's name. His mama ain't named him no "Button."

I've got to say that this last episode (#4) was pretty awesome. Washington, striding into the scene, a titan.
-
I hope that future high-schoolers will be forced to watch this mini-series - not just because it's excellent, but because they'll all laugh their asses off during the beautifully shot
premature ejaculation love scene.
-
i think that was tangible proof to abigail adams that john did not touch or even look at another woman while he was alone in paris.
-
should i watch this? I have watched about 10 minutes and find it terribly boring, but the part I saw was a trial.
-
it is kind of boring... it's extremely dry with a lot of talking and not a whole lot of action (john adams seems to always be arriving after the battle happens if not missing it completely). the characters are what make the series for me. i was skeptical of paul giamatti as john adams, but he has won me over. laura linney plays a sublime abigail adams and the rest of the founding fathers like ben franklin, thomas jefferson etc. are vivid and dynamic and the politics and friction between them is fascinating to me. but then again... i read the mccullough book a few years ago and was really into that era of american history when i was a kid. i find it rewarding but it's not for everyone.
-
I like it (I've seen the first 3 episodes), but I don't know why they feel the need to tilt the camera as much as they do. Do they think that spices up all the scenes of people talking or is it some sort of homage to the old Batman series?
-
I agree AP Mike! It drives me nuts.
-
That "sickness" scene at the end of episode three went on a bit too long, but I think the rest of the miniseries is awesome so far. The guy who plays Jefferson is great too.
-
I like old-timey costumes and buildings. This is why I like the show.
-
I like it a lot but agree with ChrisF. I think you have to bring some existing interest in that period of history to this or it won't be your thing. That said, after this series is over, I'm cancelling HBO. There, you've been warned HBO.
-
This thread sure turfed out. I guess Episode 7 left everyone too devastated to post.
-
I just watched the whole series over a week on DVD.
Loved the first half - all the separatism stuff and seeking to get independence. The courtroom scene in the first episode. T-Wilks as B-Frank. Loved all that.
Once they got independence, it got a little less interesting for me. All the politicking and rivalries etc sort of dragged.
And the last episode, as Dorv said, was pretty harrowing. I didn't think they could do gnarlier than the leg-cut-off-with-chainsaw, but sho'nuff! I'm glad the breast removal was not shown onscreen too heavily.
Plus I appreciated the direction from Tom Hooper, who's currently shooting my most anticipated film (http://areyougenehackman.blogspot.com/2008/06/this-is-terrible-day-for-leeds-united.html) of 2009.

I liked Tom's recounting of the events of July 4, 1776 on the recent classic podcast. The band of four American adventurers who stormed the shores of Britain and killed the king.
