Title: Rock "Operas"?
Post by: Rainer on March 28, 2008, 01:46:51 PM
From the late 60s / early 70s. Been listening to a lot of them recently:

Tommy (The Who)
SF Sorrow by (Pretty Things)
Odessa (Bee Gees)
A Teenage Opera (Mark Wirtz)

Any other recommendations?

Quadrophenia is great, no matter what Richard Nixon said.

Does Jeff Wayne's War of the World's count?
If it doesn't, it should.

Agreed. What about The Story of I by Patrick Moraz?

Can we open this up to include "concept albums"?

If you scratch the whole "rock" conceit: Prince Paul's A Prince Among Thieves. Brilliant. Even Everlast sounds great on it!

Nah, it's got a narrative and everything.

Prince Among Thieves has more narrative than Arthur!  Plus it has Mario Bros. samples.

Dave From Knoxville!  You and Christina the Yes fan would get along swimmingly.  I'm mostly just a fan of Side One of this.

Side two of Small Faces' Ogden's Nutgone Flake is the story of your friend and mine, "Happiness Jack" as he rides a giant fly to find the missing half of the crescent moon.  It ends with the wisdom, "Life is just a bowl of All-bran."
(sorry for the spoiler there...)

I have mentioned this somewhere before, but here's a rock opera about the Protestant Reformation

Hey TL, it's about time for a rock opera about chain-fighting, don't you think?

It should be the story of a showdown between two top-notch chain fighters to decide which one is the best. And it should sound like Harvey Scales' Hot Foot: A Funque Dizco Opera. (http://www.discogs.com/release/1021506)
