Title: Pre-Ted Leo Soda Meet-Up
Post by: Forrest on July 07, 2008, 05:06:54 PM
I thought I'd try again to arrange a soda meet-up if anyone's interested, since I can imagine a few FOT are planning on attending this one. I'll probably get either a Ginger Ale or a Diet Dr. Pepper; haven't made my final decision yet. I know he's not with 3EB on this one, but it should be a pretty good show nonetheless.

Why don't you just bring some Tea's Tea with you and sip it on the great lawn whilst your ears sip on the sweet sounds of Teddy Songbird...

I so wish I could go to this.  Last year's McCarren show was one of the best ever.

Eh. I'm more of a Surge man myself.

And you will be missed, Grote. I was hoping we could bro down like old times, but I know we will soon.

Apparently you have to get tickets at the show and tickets are available at 5pm. I get off work at 6pm and it'll take a half hour to get there. People who've been to these events, will I arrive to be told to go home?

I am guessing that I'm okay, but I am 0-100 in guessing the timing of musical events. I always arrive too early to shows and end up waiting and waiting, until I finally decide to arrive later, in which case it's already sold out.

You are shameless, emily.

Reminds me of this passage in the NY Times Magazine profile of Rush Limbaugh:

"Others use Limbaugh as their pitchman, which costs them a premium and a long-term commitment. And lately he has created a new option. At a much higher rate he will weave a product into his monologue (To a caller who said he took two showers after voting for Clinton in Operation Chaos, Limbaugh responded: “If you had followed my advice and gotten a Rinnai tankless water heater, you wouldn’t have needed to take two showers. And I’ll tell you why. . . .”)"

That's a really fascinating article, by the way.

Yeah, it's a good read. I was surprised the article referred to Rush's hearing problems yet didn't really mention the fact that he went deaf because of his pain killer addiction.

And to all FOTs seeing Ted, have fun. I saw him before Pearl Jam last week and he was excellent.

See, now, this is why you are awesome (other than your music, which I also hear is pretty good - I only listen to Wyclef).  Man do I wish I could go.  Maybe I'll try to sneak off the reservation.

I'm starting a job in Battery Park this week. I'm selling apples for a nickel to pay for all my hedge funds that have tanked.

I can scout out a soda-jerk locale. I swear on my britches to do a better job than the Jay Reatard fiasco.

TL, you are too good to us goons.

GETTING BACK ON TRACK...

There's a filthy bar by Chamber St that Joe Hardhat and associated Firemen hang out in that is really cheap. They have Hank Williams on the jukebox. There is also a bar a block away from the Staten Island ferry that is closer but looks absolutely decrepid.

But why all the bars? There are landmarks too. The Irish Potato Famine Memorial is really nice and easy to find. You can see Jersey City from there.

I think I might be able to come- in a lucky coincidence, it happens to be the same day as the only night my friend has off from work. But we wouldn't be able to wait for tickets since I'm not done with work (here in CT) until after 4, so the logistics are iffy. Not to mention that I have yet to actually ask my parents if I can go (sorry for the stupid adolescent stuff).

Alright, to accommodate the under 21 (Canadian) crowd, we'll meet at 6pm in front of the Staten Island Ferry hanger. It's close and accessable from pretty much every train that runs through the area. Send me a PM for my number so I know how many people to wait for.

We can meet underneath this tribute to mass-transit...

Mr. Leo did in fact play "The World is in the Turlet" (by request!) and it was a new kind of awesome. Great to see all the confused faces in the crowd.

TL, you were at the the meet-up. You were on stage playing... doing more at the meet-up than any of us. We just stood there. You worked harder than your own sweat wristband. That thing gave up half-way through.

I've never seen you and the Rx play before, and I was knocked out. No joke. I can't wait for the next time.

We met Alan Vega from Suicide at a nearby dive bar afterwards, which was unintentionally hilarious. It was a night of adventure.

Emma is sweeter in person than anyone can imagine. It's our loss that she's leaving so soon. You couldn't ask for an a group as easy-going as the FOT's I met last night.

Gravy, I can be an ass. I have no idea how to joke with people... sorry. Keep kicking against the man.

We decided to go to TGIFridays because it was the only place around that would accommodate over/unders. Thank god that place was closed and we opted for "The Blarney Stone" right next store, who couldn't have cared less who was even old enough to drive. You want a bar for Joe Hardhat, here it is.

After a while, when half the group had decided to get home, Vega trots in with a gait that's right out of Barfly. I'm sure that he's "the guy from Suicide", so Neil starts shouting for him. And lo, he's more than happy for the company. He's very free with stories about Debbie Harry, and opinionated about sports though that left some of us behind, except for Neil. Vega gets some Long Island goon involved in the conversation that starts to look less like a free exchange of ideas than some big dude who wants to talk loudly in your face.

Later on, Neil would confess that he had trouble figuring out where the guys loyalties lay and assumes he was just argumentative.

Vega follows us out (wanders out) to smoke a cig that he's smoked halfway through earlier, pinched out and pocked. He says goodnight and has hugs for us. He seems to love and be known in this bar, not for his status in music history so much as he's an old guy who hangs out at this bar an awful lot.

The next FOT meet-up may involve the Blarney Stone to party with Suicide.

My favorite part of the night is still Numberman's shameless "Suicide! Hey! Guy from Suicide! Suuuu-icide!"

Neil is my new favorite person. An evening with him will end on some Saudi billionaire's yacht, or in jail.

I want to change my profile to include "Now run along y'all, don't make me stab ya twice," but I don't know how that could ever be construed as funny.

I've worked in that area for 2 years.  There are no good bars.  I thought about recommending a real hardhat place, the White Horse (not the Dylan Thomas one)  but even that was too awful -- if you really like the Eagles you might like it.  That said, recommending that particular hellhole of the Blarney Stone never entered my mind.  That is right out of Barfly.  No irony. Just people really digging down into booze.

I'm proud that you made it so fun and sorry I had to miss the show.
