Title: FOT Not So Secret Santa.
Post by: Jason on November 15, 2006, 10:19:48 PM
RULES.

1. You must spend a minimum of $10 plus postage.

2. Deadline for the drawing of names is December 2nd. I will draw the names and email the particpants with the name, address and FOT Forum nickname of the person they are buying a gift for.

3. You must mail your gift before Dec 18th, earlier if it's overseas. No excuses.

4. You must not open your gift until Christmas day.

5. Feel free to post about it but don't reveal who you are getting a gift for. I'm looking at you Bruce.

7. Please think about what you are buying, make the gift as funny and as unusual as possible. Don't leave it to the last minute or send unoriginal mass manufactured kitsch crap (eg. articulated Jesus dolls or Betty Page ashtrays from Urban Outfitters) or some last minute, laugh free tome form the "humour" section of your local bookshop.

7. After we have all posted about what we received I will start a poll to decide if we should reveal who gave who what.

Anyone wanting to take part, please private message me your details with Secret Santa as the subject.
Post here if you want to discuss this
or just to let people know you're in.

So who's in?

I'm in, especially because it will seem ever more absurd to my loving, lovely wife - especially in the context of me being completely overwhelmed at work!

so let's start think about the gift i'm going to give....

I'd just like to say if you want in then pm me your details.
A lot of people are saying they are in and not doing this, thats not to say this idea isn't a total success, because it is.

To whomever it turns out to concern:  my gift will not be ready to ship till after Christmas even if I order now (what can I say?  Internet shopping can have its drawbacks).  That being so, I'd like to place the order after I know who you are, thus saving time and money.

I hope this will be acceptable.

I'm in. And if my recipient doesn't drink or is too young to receive alcohol, it's their problem not mine.

Relax baby.
The draw is on Saturday.
We have 12 entrants including the late great Laurie, but not including the people who said they'd be in but didn't message me their details.

The draw has been made, I will email all the individuals involved later.

have e-mails gone out?  I haven't gotten anything yet.

also, how much is a signed picture of Tom worth?  I had to pay $100 to get it.

Post by: scotttsss on December 04, 2006, 09:45:21 PM
I don't think they've gone out yet I haven't gotten one either..  and $100 sounds reasonable for the picture, I paid about that for Weird Al's.

What an effort!
The thirteen participants should have all now recieved an email with details of the recipient of their gift.
My Job wasn't made easier by the four FOTs who forgot to include an email address or the one who forgot to include a street address.

Ok, lets do this.

I haven't written anything on the card yet... Are we to remain completely anonymous Secret Santas, or can we reveal our identities to our elves in the accompanying cards or letters?
Title: Re: FOT Secret Santa.
Post by: Jason on December 11, 2006, 09:17:06 PM
Anonymous, then we reveal what we got on xmas day, then maybe we vote on whether to reveal who got who what.
I hope this doesn't all go wrong.

As will mine.  In any case, I inadvertently threw anonymity to the winds, because I lost my mind and signed the card.  Damned if was going to unwrap the thing just to scratch out my name.

Me, too, finally (I was indisposed yesterday and so couldn't get to the post office).  And, Jason, sorry for blowing my cover, but my return address is a dead giveaway anyway.  How many FOT live in Lubec, after all?  If there's another, I think we'd have found each other by now.

1) My secret santa gift was personally delivered, which is either super cool or slightly creepy. Two hot rockin' rock magazines and a large welded fish. I find fish hilarious so it is a great gift.

2) I sent mine out today at long last.

I got my Secret Santa gift, which is very nicely wrapped and has ribbon and everything. I can't put it under the tree, as my little Sidney cat eats paper when he's frustrated. On Christmas day, he opens his own presents if it's a catnip toy. Soooo cute. Zowie also opens her own presents. Awww.

I didn't realise you had to put a return address on packages in the US whence the anonymity confusion.
This law severely hinders the Secret Santa industry, no wonder the American economy is in the shitter.

1) I'm not sure, but fish are funny. Somehow the presence of fish add 25% to the liklihood something is funny.

2) I forgot to put the cool Edward Gorey card in the envolope with my gift. To the recipient, so sorry.

I got my present from my secret santa as well. I'm being a good little boy, though, and not making note of the return address, and I won't open it until Christmas morn. See Santa, I'm being good!
Title: Re: FOT Not So Secret Santa.
Post by: Jason on December 20, 2006, 02:16:12 PM
I think any notion of secrecy has gone out of the window.
I'm terrified that this won't work and someone will break the chain of FOT love.

I got my package! I'm not gonna report who sent it yet. I can't wait to open it. It's under the tree alongside all the books I'm giving to the neighborhood kids. I'll report back Christmas morning to report the contents of the package. It's heavy!!!!

The gifts were individually wrapped inside. We're counting FOUR! And a card too! Fancy! This is so exciting!
Title: Re: FOT Not So Secret Santa.
Post by: Sarah on December 20, 2006, 03:48:11 PM
Bah, humbug, Jason.  It would take more than a Secret Santa foul-up to break that chain, for it is forged of shared devotion to Tom and the Best Show.  I defy anyone to find a sturdier substance!
Title: Re: FOT Not So Secret Santa.
Post by: JP on December 21, 2006, 02:29:29 PM
I got a second secret santa gift pack! (two presents and everything).  I hope there hasn't been a mix up.  Jason, I'm happy to forward on gifts to whomever should have received them - I'm certain I shouldn't have received so much stuff.

I have to say I'm more excited to get FOT presents than any other presents because in a horrific way I probably share more interests with FOTs than real people!

I just checked JP, I only gave your address out once so I imagine you just got a generous Santa.
The only fuck-up I know of so far is failed to send one email to the correct address resulting in a late gift and somebody else who is incredibly lazy.
Title: Re: FOT Not So Secret Santa.
Post by: Sarah on December 21, 2006, 03:29:02 PM
My present arrived today--in an envelope with no return address.  I'm surprised someone in the P.O. didn't rip it open to analyze the contents.

Barring unforeseen visits from fat, red-nosed old men bearing gifts (and I know a couple of these, so it's possible that one or more may turn up), this will be the only item under my nonexistent tree.  See, without the FOT, Christmas might have passed me by!

Oh my god, I love my present! When my brother asked my mother for Christmas gift ideas for his dear sister, I told her to tell him to check out The Bone Room (http://www.boneroom.com/) for stocking stuffers, like rat skeletons and miscellaneous bones and teeth!

My Secret Santa got me a taxidermied mouse with little wings sewn onto it. Awwww. Bless. Reminds me of that interesting article Michelle Tea wrote about alternative taxidermy for Believer Magazine. I put the little guy on one of my bookcases. He's sitting on the new Thomas Pynchon book.

This is seriously the perfect gift for me. Last year, my now ex-boyfriend got me a dessicated octopus for Christmas. I still love it, even though I want my ex to choke on his own vomit. I love this stuff.
Title: Re: FOT Not So Secret Santa.
Post by: Sarah on December 25, 2006, 09:50:19 AM
I covet your mouse, Laurie.  Still, it's probably better off with you:  I would've just admired it for a while and then shoved it in a box somewhere.

So, I've opened my SS prezzy!  I got a catalog that sort of gave away my Santa's identity, some notepaper with accompanying envelopes and stickers (attached to the wrapping of which was a business card that also tossed anonymity to the winds), a copy of Shunryu Suzuki's Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind, from which I hope eventually to gain true enlightenment, and--my favorite--a 1955 paperback entitled The Girls from Planet 5.

Thanks, Santa whom I will not name!

The one Megan received was a mistake on my part, I got the email address wrong.
Amplituden's gift was late due to extreme laziness and selfishness on the part of the gifter.
I don't know about Emerson.
Next time someone else can organise it.

Oh, come on.  You did a beautiful job.  Emerson's gift will likely arrive soon, and, even it doesn't (in which case, you should publish the name of the malingerer here, so we can shame him/her into ponying up), that's a pretty high success rate, with many a happy recipient.  You should be proud.

Also, in general, I should be ignored when I get cranky.  I'm a sour kind of lass, and sometimes it spills over onto the board.  Apologies.

Mine still hasn't checked in. It's possible that the Chicago postal service fucked up yet again. Like most of the other public works in this city, it's prone to leakage.

Regardless, Jason should be proud.
