Title: Best Show References in other things
Post by: Dan B on September 23, 2008, 01:03:05 AM
Post Best Show references you find in non-Best Show places.

Just saw this a few minutes ago.

W.
Premise: An ignorant hillbilly (James Brolin) with an incongruously aristocratic bloodline fucks around for 40 years with the aid of mountains of cocaine, gallons of booze, and enough loose women to stock a Texas whorehouse. Then he discovers Jesus, buys a baseball team, becomes governor of Texas, and kills a bunch of people through capital punishment. Then, in a far-fetched, credibility-straining plot twist, this funny-talking, semi-literate yahoo becomes a two-term President Of The United States and nearly destroys the world in the process. This sounds like the premise for a zany farce like President Baseball—albeit with a lot less baseball—but director Oliver Stone swears it's based on a true story. Like anybody should trust that crackpot.

I was just looking for the thread where AV Club S&W references were pointed out to post this very same thing.

Paul F. Tomkins used the word "terlet" on Best Week Ever last Friday.  Does that count?

Thank you for correcting my spelling error so politely.

I just think Tomkins sounds like an adorable elf, but I mean no insult! One time I called Kyle Gass "Kyle GLASS" on the air, so believe me I throw no stones about spelling comedians names.

Yes, especially because of how strenuously he objected at the word when Tom originally proposed it.

i might be confused, but i think he may have also said it on one of the root of all evil episodes he was on...though it's possible i'm thinking of the best week ever.

I remember seeing an episode of an obsessive-compulsive detective show with a character named John Wurster in it.  Don't know if that counts for the topic, or if it's fair game for that matter, but it had the Mrs. and I both going "hey, I know someone with that name..."

Check it:

This one's actually pre-Best Show and therefore doesn't count at all, but I'm throwing it in anyway:
That Mr. Show sketch about the detached siamese twins; Bob reveals he's getting reattached, not to his brother, but to "Jon Wurster in marketing."

I was just listening to Word Balloon a comic interview podcast and they have Brian Michael Bendis on as a guest, he was fielding questions from his website and someone wrote in about Tom wanting to write for Marvel. It was dicsussed for a couple minutes (I think this was in part 3 of 4 if you want to find it).

I asked that question.  I wrote about it a bit in the comic book thread in general discussion.

Well, in an older episode of The Simpsons, Bart and Millhouse are being chased through the mall by a tiger. They run past a Radio Hut.

JW being introduced as "representing Newbridge" by John Darnielle, live in Leeds?

Admittedly it may have had something to do with the t-shirt that I was wearing.

Does this include things S & W had a direct hand in? On an episode of the Squidbillies that Jon Wurster worked on, Early called his signature demolition derby move "Rattlesnake At A Thai Wedding."  And there was also the issue of X-Men written by Matt Fraction where one of the characters wore the Newbridge Is For Lovers t-shirt.

And a slightly more abstract reference was PFT and ICP guest-starring on the same episode of ATHF, presumably a nod to the Gathering of the Juggaloes.

I always thought this was a Tom malapropism, but (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/14/nyregion/14paladino.html?_r=2&hp):

Quote
The alliance between the Republican Carl P. Paladino and an Orthodox rabbi from Brooklyn has fallen apart, with the rabbi denouncing Mr. Paladino on Wednesday for his apology over remarks he had made about homosexuality on Sunday.

The rabbi, Yehuda Levin, who helped write those remarks, said Mr. Paladino “folded like a cheap camera” because of the uproar they had set off. And the rabbi said he could no longer support Mr. Paladino’s candidacy for governor of New York.

This dude is a friend of mine/Mackro's and is largely responsible for me really getting into the S&W CDs, so this isn't the most surprising namedrop in the world. But it's still great.

On Conan's first show tonight they titled the episode Baa Baa Blackmail. The first thing this made me think of was how long until they use Tom's favorite Eeny Meeny Miney Murder.

On The League (the Paul Scheer Vehicle) a couple episodes ago they tease Andre about being a boyfriend chameleon, like when he was dating a hippie girl. Andre replies "Hey, Starchild was great". Knowing what a fan Scheer is of the Best Show I can just see him going through that list of hippie names from Hippie Johnny and choosing his favorite - Starchild.

I am assuming that the coaches involved are fans of the calls to TBSOWFMU from the Newbridge area.

I know I am probably reaching here, but during Weekend Update on SNL last night they made a joke about A Prairie Home Companion putting people to sleep.  Also on 30 Rock a few weeks ago, Jack talked about Reaganing.  Like I said, I'm reaching.  But it wouldn't be a surprise if Tom had some fans writing these shows.

I'm with you on that one ... I totally thought of "Reagan '84" when I saw that episode.

I agree with this one too, but sometimes I do feel like I'm in A Beautiful Mind, tying strings between Newbridge characters and one off jokes from TV shows.
