I've got some traveling coming up and I was wondering if there was a way to download some of The Best Show archive, and if there is a way to do such a thing, is there any opposition from Tom or the fine folks of WFMU?
-
post 47 more times and a world of downloadable content will show itself
-
New to the forums, never posted this question before didn't come across anything with a quick search, forgot that forums are breeding grounds for snarky responses.
Thanks for taking a moment of your life to make me, a total stranger, feel dumb about asking a question.

Slow your roll, son. The man speaks the truth!
You can't download full shows anywhere, but you can get a plethora of clips at bestshowvault.blogspot.com (http://bestshowvault.blogspot.com).

Thanks Matt

Yeah, Colin was actually answering your question honestly. There's a "secret" forum for those with fifty or more posts. Allegedly.
My advice is to take a picture of the nearest cat and post it 45 times in a row.
-
Ahh. Then my apologies to Colin. Sorry about that, still new.
-
Ooh, should we tell him what happens when he gets to 10 posts then?
-
Because you're going on a trip I made an exception for you and elevated your post count. NOW do you see the secrets before you on the FOT board?
Tom.

That right there? Magic.

I'm kind of quiet on the board and was looking for a place to put my fiftieth. This seems like as good a place as any.
-
This is an interesting piece of information. I think I'll be posting more around here. Don't worry, I'm probably not a creep.

I had no idea. DARN. I wish I had opinions....
40 more to go, or so. I give myself till about May.

Trinsky is joking I hope!
please have patience new posters. reach 50 when you reach it.
the last thing this forum needs is hundreds of useless shitty posts so people can buff their stats and get at downloads.
Ike and Brian you seem to have the right idea

Oh man, thank you very, very much. This completes my entertainment coccoon for the flight. American Lion for Reading/Education. The Best Show for Listening/Comedy/Education.
And again, my apologies to Colin for being a jerk. I misunderstood what you were saying.
Also, I'm really not bluffing. I promise to participate in the forum appropriately. Pay my dues. I'm not looking to jump the line.
-
I only brought it up so that TheMush wouldn't have his feelings hurt by your well-intended but cryptic post, Colin. You know, making the new guy feel welcome and all.
I WASN'T kidding about him posting 45 consecutive pictures of the same cat, and frankly am disappointed that hasn't happened yet.
-
Trinsky - I would do this, but I've been having a hard time finding a picture of a cat on the internet. I will redouble my search.
-
Well, apparently I need to start lurking less and posting more.

I'm in no rush to burn through 50 posts, but there is a way to download and save the newer, pop-up player enabled episodes.
It's not as effortless as Mel's shiny podcast, but the music is still part of the program. (Stream law requires that, unless you have hefty permission, podcasters remove the music.) The end result is similar to recording the archive in real-time, just faster and better fidelity.
1. Right click the pop-up player link and Save Link As to your desktop. It'll save as a "listen.m3u" file.
2. Open that listen.m3u file with Notepad, and you'll see a URL that looks mostly like this:
http://mp3archives.wfmu.org/archive/kdb/mp3jump.mp3/0:11:1/0/BS/bs081216.mp3
3. Open that URL in a browser and Save Page As whatever you want to name it.
Does this tap into some massive WFMU archive? Is that archive permanent? Don't know. Also, I don't know how this would work on a Mac. I'm assuming that we're all saving it to our Zunes.
-
I suppose it's time for me to post more.
-
Indeed. As the band leader, the other guys depend on me to have new gems for van trips. I'm getting down to the wire as we've been through all the S&W records, Best Show Vault etc.
-
Yeah, time to get involved. All I know is that I would rather be going back into the history of the Best Show instead of Keith and the Girl.
-
Is this going to turn into the "I'm trying to get to 50 posts" thread?
...either way, I'm not gonna miss out.

It is!

there's already a thread for that in the "hey new people" section of the forum.

Is that where I should post my cat pictures?

In the back of the first room there is a door that leads to a second room. The first step is finding the door. When you reach the second room, there is another door.

I'll jump in on the goofy "juke the stats" fourm.
Stupid lurker self...

Oh, 50 posts, eh? Nice.

I tried Mike A.D.'s method, but it just downloads as a .ram file. Any ideas?

Found this app for mac: http://www.bitcartel.com/irecordmusic/
Only problem is that it records in real time so you have to stream the whole thing to save it to the hard drive. There has to be a way to download the file straight from the stream source.

Great site. Too bad it isn't being updated anymore. This got me to buy a premium rapidshare account.

The Vault had to DIE in order to make room in the COSMOS for BEST SHOW GEMS.

You don't need to do that, there is a much simpler way that allows you to directly download the mp3 from the site. It only works for the recent archived episodes, the ones that are available in mp3 format still.
I used to have a program for windows that allowed you to download streaming ram archives, but I forgot what it's called. If I wasn't busy with school right now I'd go searching for it. I used to download BBC radio one shows with it, though I find that ram files are horrible quality.
-
I have used Net Transport in the past to download ram streams, then converted to mp3. I think Net Transport is not free anymore, but you can get the older version somewhere.
-
ah, they changed how the flash player works so you can't download the mp3 stream directly anymore :(
-
If you use Firefox, the M3U Ripper add-on will help immensely with downloading the archives that still exist in mp3 format.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3023
You have to use the "experimental version" (1.6) if you're on Firefox 3.0. From there, you right click on the mp3 link, choose "rip playlist contents," and away you go.
Edit: This probably goes without saying, but if you're downloading stuff or making heavy use of WFMU's incredibly generous archives in any way, you need to be pledging during the marathon. Or whenever you have some extra cash burning a hole in your pocket. I know times are tough, but the station fell pretty far short of its fundraising goal this year. Since they run such a tight ship, something's going to have to be sacrificed to plug those holes. I hope it's not the archives. If you have any extra money throughout the year, send a pledge. They'll take your money at any time.
Sorry to get on a soapbox, but I was pretty disappointed that the station missed the goal this year.
-
hey, don't tell me that, I pledged enough for the premium
