Baseball and the Band. I disagree on those two things. I also don't see much special about PFT's VH1 show, and I LOVE his comedy.
I WHOLEHEARTEDLY AGREE on Bluegrass music, Jazz music, the stupidity of George Carlin, how dated "Airplane" is, and about a million other things.
-
i fail to see how playing kickball is kidstuff while reading comic books isn't.
See also: metal. (Did Tom ever make his opinion on Brian Posehn public?)

-
Agree: Billy Crystal, ABBA, celebrity death pools

Disagree: Basketball. It has its moments but I can't stick with it. I never know when to cheer! Baseball is my sport of choice.
(I hope I got the format of this topic right)
-
Agree: Unrest, Tool Academy, Stephen King
Disagree: Celebrity chefs, metal (some of it is good sometimes), jazz (ditto)

Mine is the same as this, except for me agreeing with Tom and not MOS on Steely Dan.
Although, I'm kind of turning against baseball romanticism. Not the Bill James baseball freaks, who are great, or normal fans. But the kind that sees baseball as a kind of bucolic ballet or psychological chess or something. I enjoy the pace of baseball but people only project that junk onto it because there's so much dead time for them to start imagining stuff.
If I could limit the catalog of Ween to 1990-1997 I'd disagree with Tom on that. After that it's been so uneven I'm tending toward agree.
To answer Ike, above, BWE is special in that it's hilarious and keeps me informed about the pop culture BS I would otherwise have no idea about. But where it REALLY shines is in having the most incompetent podcasting operation I have encountered in my decades of podcast subscribing.
-
Disagree: Joey Levels
Justice for Joey Levels!
-
I just started to start a Baseball thread in GD, but stopped cuz I got nothing to say at the moment other than ever since I learned to appreciate the nuances of pitching I can honestly say that I am often hanging on every pitch. At least when the Cardinals are playing.

Oh, I was thinking about what would be in my bit, then I read that comment. Wow, talk about humbled. Thanks for bring us back down to earth, Senorcorazon.

I totally agree with this. There's a part of baseball that I do find sort of romantic, but it's definitely not the stuff you mention. If you haven't, check this book out:
It's a celebration of baseball via the childhood hobby of card collecting and honors the weird photos, odd nicknames, and forgotten schlubs of the past. It encapsulates almost everything I love about the game without too much of the undeserved self-aggrandizing that certain scholars and historians are prone to (i.e. the kind of stuff you mention).
-
One more disagree I forgot: Afghan Whigs/Greg Dulli
-
Agree: ABBA (but only after listening to TBSOWFMU for quite some time), metal, Jen Kirkman, being polite to ladies
Disagree: sports, just about anything vaguely high-brow
-
Agree: Kid Rock.
Disagree: Lenny Bruce.

Man, I haven't thought about that book in years. It's great, though! It's like a compendium of schlubs and inexcusable, awkward poses.
-
I almost forgot!
Agree: The Monkees, Al Green, Game Theory, Unrest, This American Life (I used to love it, but now? Ick.)
Disagree: Synecdoche, NY, The Band, baseball, Joey Levels
-
Agree: ABBA, Clifford, most things
Disagree: Munn being Queen of the Hate Pit. We all know she'd chose to be High Empress of the Hate Pit.
Things about which Tom has "shown me the light": The Police, Olive Garden salad and breadsticks (which are thrust at me daily by my roommate, the waiter), just being myself once in a while, i.e. during calls.
-
Disagree: baseball, the band, tool academy, and i fail to see how playing kickball is kidstuff while reading comic books isn't.

What do you mean he's not serious about ABBA? Do you think Tom enjoys ABBA ironically because I don't think so. I'm pretty sure Tom knows ABBA is great. Either that or everyone else is in on this joke but me. I can't stand thinking that everyone is laughing at this and, by extension, laughing at me. You, sir, have blown my mind and made me face my biggest fear.
-
yeah I think that guy is projecting
-
We are all laughing at you, spacepope, but it's not because of this ABBA business. I believe Tom's appreciation of ABBA is sincere. It better be.
-
I also agree wholeheartedly in Tom's 'thumbs-down' vote on overrated hip hop group The Clipse.
It was a brave stance, and one that he has my full support on.

Agree: PT Anderson, ABBA, The Police, George Carlin, New Jersey
Disagree: Baseball, mixed martial arts, some metal
-
1) AP Mike will someday be on the news. Not in a "saved-a-puppy" way.
2) Rampant illiteracy within Tool Academy. C'mon... I don't think any of those guys could manage to get gel in their hair with out carefully reading the directions on the bottle. Twice.

Listening to the very funny 09/25/2001 show with the angry Mr. Bungle Fan...
Agree: Frank Zappa, Mr. Bungle, Secret Chiefs, John Zorn, Buckethead, Alice Donut, Butthole Surfers,Lard, Bootsauce, Sausage, Primus, Monks of Doom, Oysterhead, Victims Family, 2475
Disagree: NoMeansNo
-
Disagree: NoMeansNo
I missed that one. What did Tom say about NoMeansNo? I like them. A lot!
Anyway...
I agree with Tom on almost everything. But I enjoyed The Lord of the Rings and The Aristocrats.

It is the first call of the show (about 24 min. in) and the guy asks Tom if he likes Mr. Bungle (after confirming that Tom dislikes Frank Zappa). Tom politely says no. The guy couldn't believe it and then starts listing more bands he thinks Tom should "respect". Tom dislikes ALL of them. The only one he was kind of on the fence with is B. Surfers. Felt he missed them in their heyday. (I actually agree with that too.)
And the only one on the list that I disagreed with Tom was NoMeansNo. And then I remembered this thread...
It is well worth a listen.
-
Also agree: Speed Racer.
I watched that thing last night, it's actually lots of fun and kinda cool, despite being completely insane. I'd go see the sequel to this in a minute, too bad we'll never get one now.
-
agree: most things, I guess.
disagree: jazz, alt country, tom waits
It seems that Tom hates just about all the music I like, which is disheartening. A lot.

This harkens back to Tom's days of playing lots of Andrew W.K. I hear those episodes in the archives and I can never tell if he actually enjoys the music, or if he's just making fun of the guy.
I like W.K. because he makes meat-head music but he's not trying to be tough (i.e. Godsmack, Disturbed, Linkin Park) and is instead just being fun. A whole lot of fun, frankly.
His "I Get Wet" album will always have a place in my CD collection. Whaaaat?
Still, I can't tell if Tom really likes him or not.
-
Agree: Video games, smoking, duck crossing, Elton John, Kevin Smith, Outlaw Pete, Tool Academy, Mr. Brooks
Disagree: Paying for things with change, Mr. Bungle (nothing else coming to mind at the moment)
Neither Agree Nor Disagree: Comics

Agree: Rescue Dogs, Neil Young
Disagree: I'm Not There, Pangea
-
Agree: ABBA, Stephen King
Disagree: There Will Be Blood*
*I awaited this movie excitedly because of it's Jonny Greenwood connection. Once I saw it I hated it. Maybe I need to watch it again.

I'd say give it another view, Bonnie. I generally loathe PT Anderson's films but I thought TWBB was pretty good.

Old agreements: Drunk Horse, Monster Magnet
-
Agree: http://www.scharplingandwurster.com/?p=171#more-171
ugh

Disagree: I'm Not There
I actually couldn't agree with him more on this one. Esp. the whole idea that if "you don't like it, you don't get it." This argument seems to be the last resort of Fight Club fans too. I mean, awesome that you liked it. But I hate it when people can't understand that it's completely possible to "get it" and still hate it. It's like they're so pleased with the ability to identify cleverness they can't comprehend that others might be able to have opinions that go beyond the smug curtain.

It sounds like you missed that it's not about Bob Dylan per se - it's about what we think about Bob Dylan. Went right over your head, huh?
-
you just blew my mind

I stand with you on this one.

Agree: Ted Leo
Disagree: Ted Leo
I have much respect for Ted Leo, but other than Shake the Sheets I usually only dig about half of every album.

I paid $20 to read this thread and I think I could do it again.

Listening to a show from early '04 and Tom called Big Boi from OutKast "4th rate". I know part of Tom's beef is that Big Boi apparently had some kind of pit bull breeding thing going or something, but I gotta say that the Speakerboxxx is a thousand times better than The Love Below and there is nothing 4th rate about Big Boi's contributions to ATLiens or Aquemini.
-
Agree: Spectacle with Elvis Costello, Neil Young, Faces, Ram, Inside the NBA
Disagree: The Band, Adult Swim
Strongly Disagree: Baseball, Pangaea, and Al Green

I totally agree with you on this. I loved the movie, but really enjoyed hearing Tom rip i apart because sure you can get it and not like it. In fact, I understand anyone who didn;t like it. There was plenty not to like, but I enjoyed it all the same. Fight Club is also just total trash so it's a little different.
-
Agree: Rollins, the Great Country of Canada, Drive Like Jehu's s/t, LOTR/ Star Wars, Kevin Smith
Disagree: Fight Club, Jazz & Blues, Lil Wayne, There Will Be Blood, Apple products, Elvis Costello
-
I find it curious that The Kid has declared the Spiderbags better than the DC Snipers as The Spiderbags stuff is way more twang-laden.
-

As an undying fan of the show I am reluctant to point this out, but the same could be said nearly word for word for Tim and Eric Awesome Show, by one of it's many haters. Smugness gets nobody anywhere!

What did Tom say about The Band?
