So because I'm insane and obsessive, I've been working my way forward through the Best Show archives. And while doing so, I've been keeping a running log of what's contained in each show. I decided I'd post it and see if anyone had any corrections or comments to offer.
So far, I've worked my way halfway through 2001. Here's links to shows from 2000 and 2001.
http://scratchbomb.com/bestshowlog_2000.htm (http://scratchbomb.com/bestshowlog_2000.htm)
http://scratchbomb.com/bestshowlog_2001_1.htm (http://scratchbomb.com/bestshowlog_2001_1.htm)
As for the guests, I think I've been able to identify characters played by Wurster, Jon Benjamin, and Jon Glazer, but there's a few other folks who make appearances whose identities I don't know.
My self-imposed rules were, I'd document calls as much as humanly possible, but I wouldn't do so for calls during "bits"--especially since so many callers would say things along the lines of 'Is this a joke?'--unless those calls themselves were bits (ie, Wurster calling up during the Mets vs Yankees show, or "George Benson's Son"s real dad calling up to berate him). Early on, most callers don't identify themselves, but I include their names when they do.
I also didn't really detail actual interviews, like the Neal Pollack interview, although I may reconsider doing that.
Anywhoozle, if anyone's got any corrections, comments, etc., they are heartily appreciated.

Impressive!
It's Glaser with an s.
The other Met/Yankee fan is Matt Walsh.

Another piece to the puzzle. Thanks!

By the way, this reminds us yet again that we really should consolidate our various sprawling efforts into a new, functioning wiki. This, the Newbridgtionary, the recaps, and other outlets are proof of just how obsessive FOT can be (in all the right ways).
I know this comes up all the time, but it's still true.

I agree. Just thought this might get the ol' ball rolling.

12/6/00 - Dick Halligan's brother is also Matt Walsh, I believe.
2/27/01 - I believe Gerald Perlmutter is Sam Seder.
This is really cool!

Yes, it's all coming together...
I'd be more than happy to post this to a new-and-improved wiki where anyone can correct/add/comment.
-
I see that the Best Show twitter acct. has tweeted about this, which is pretty awesome.
I just added Matt Walsh where appropriate, highlighted missing/obscure info, and did some necessary proofreading for 2000.

Alan Lieberman is Sam Seder.
-
Alan Lieberman is Sam Seder.
Is it? I coulda swore it sounded like Jon Glaser.
Will correct accordingly.

Giles Palermo the record collector is Andrew Earles. He is on the show a lot more often from about 2002-2006, so get used to that voice.

I didn't know his name, but I recognized the voice as The Very Depressed Office Worker and Skag Winesack. Thanks!

Bumping this because 2000 and 2001 are (mostly) complete. Still missing some info--some song titles, and a few identities of characters here and there. Comments/corrections continue to be welcome.
FYI: URL for 2001 has changed slightly. On to 2002...

Keep up the good work, Scratchbomb! I'm going through the archives like yourself and this is pretty helpful along with buffcoats Nebridgtionary (I think I mangled the spelling of that).
I'm really curious about the fired Star Wars guy. I don't recognize his voice at all. But it's kind of eerie how close some of his info was to the actuality of Attack of the Clones.
Also, on the 1/2/01 show, Wurster as Merlyn Hogan predicts the third Star Wars movie to be called "Revenge of the Sith". Pretty prescient.

I don't recognize his voice either. I wanna say it's Sam Seder, but I have no evidence to support that. It's obviously not any of the Usual Suspects who appeared on the show frequently back then.

This has been a subject of debate, but I'm fairly positive Gerald Perlmutter is [SS] not [JG].
edit: I see buffcoat has mentioned this already. Worth repeating.

In that case, I will update it accordingly. Thanks!

hey scratchbomb, awesome work.
ps: who's your hookup? I haven't gone on a SEPTA run in a long time, if you know what I mean.

I don't get it. I feel very unhip...

"Rails" joke. Due to the crazy energy required to take on such a project. Never mind.

Thanks. I shall add it forthwith.

as i work my way forward, I've noticed there are a number of early shows unavailable for one reason or another--usually because they contain stuff later released on a S&W CD.
here's a brief list of currently unavailable shows for as far as I've worked my way through the archives top date (thanks to Buffcoat's Newbridgtionary for identifying the reason for un-archiving in many cases). Any hope that these are out there someplace, for chronicling purposes?
Should also have the first third or so of 2002 posted very soon.

Pardon the ignorance (I'm new to the board), but where can I find Buffcoat's Newbridgtionary?

There is no archive for the following shows, for the reason guessed. If anyone does have a copy of any of them (I don't), I'm sure all would appreciate it.
December 12, 2000: Tom Talks to Radio Hut Employee
January 9, 2001: A Very Real Interview with the "Real-life Fonzie" Roland Gorchnick.
January 23, 2001: A Chat with Maurice Kern, Head of Citizens For A True Democracy.
September 4, 2001: Tom Talks To The Coolest Guy On Earth, And Tom Talks To Roger Tamblyn, Manager Of Bands Like The Inspiral Carpets And Gaye Bikers On Acid. Also, Tom Talks To Today's Youth About Returning To School.
October 23, 2001: Tom Talks To Promoter Roger Tamblyn, and Vanilla Hotbox Grits. [This show had the "Consolidated Ball Bearings" call.]
April 2, 2002: An Interview With Barry Dworkin, The 4-11 Handlebar Mustachioed Leader Of 'The Gas Station Dogs', Who Sings The Worst Song In The History Of Music. Also, Tom Sets Up His Fight With Eight Male Teenagers, And The First Installment of 'Smash Or Trash'.
There was almost definitely no show on the nights comprising the rest on your list: 01.30.2001, 02.20.2001, 05.15.2001, 05.29.2001, 12.25.2001, 01.01.2002 and 03.26.2002
Keep on keepin' on, scratchbomb.
-
Thanks, Jouster. I'll make a note of it and update accordingly.
Hope to have a good chunk of 2002 up soon; I'm right around the marathon of that year, but would rather update when I have a pile o' stuff to be examined, rather than posting, like, one show at a time.

Jouster,
I updated the Consolidated Call - any idea about 4/9/2002?
-
Dan Mackta filled in that night - no Best Show.
-
I've updated 2000 and 2001 with un-archived show info. Thanks again to everyone for the assistance.
Any thoughts on how the pages look? When I started doing it, I figured I'd just output text files from Word, real no-frills like. But if anyone thinks this might benefit from a more spiffy presentation, I'm all ears.
-
The "Former pilot" from 2.13.2001 who calls to protest is... someone. I want to say Sam Seder, but if it is he's doing a bit of an accent so I'm not totally sure.

It's Sam Seder. There are several times listening to it when I said, "Joe Lieberman's son!" and "Gerald Perlmutter!"
-
At first I thought the "angry pilot" might be an actual angry pilot.
I will update this accordingly. Should also have spiffed-up pages for these logs and 1/3 to 1/2 of 2002 up very soon.
-
So, I spiffed up the logs and made them a bit easier to navigate; there are now anchors for each show, so you could link to a specific date if you were so inclined.
Also added links to events mentioned in the shows, earlier appearances of various characters, and other fun stuff.
The first chunk of 2002 is up now as well. Links below (please note URLs have changed slightly.

Wow, excellent work Scratchbomb.
I'm going to listen to this backannouce:
Start: intro, music: Fuck, "Dandelion Ditch"; back announce
-
i forget how it was addressed, but obviously Tom did not say The Word
-
Just a heads up: half of 2002 is now posted (http://scratchbomb.com/best-show-log-2002.html). Corrections/additions always welcome
-
This is truly amazing work Scratchbomb.
-
Thanks for putting this together Scratchbomb. I dig it very much.
-
If anybody's interested, 2002 is now complete. Or as complete as I can make it. You can check it out here (http://scratchbomb.com/best-show-log-2002.html). Corrections always welcomed.
-
Now that I've got my premium, I've been able to add info for the first two Best Shows ever (or as much of them as is preserved on "Best Show Uncovered Vol. 1"). If you wish to check it out, here it is (http://scratchbomb.com/best-show-log-2000.html).
I'll add the missing shows for 2001 and 2002 in the coming weeks, and later shows as I go along.
One question: the premium does not include the unarchived shows listed below. I may have asked this already, but does anyone know if these are available in some form, somewhere?
