Because of this show and the FOT's, I'm now a hardcore fan of Seven Second Delay (SSD).
(I'm sure all of you know this but just case there is someone who doesn't know:)
If you are at all interested in SSD, read about Ken (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Freedman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Freedman) and the contributions he's made to radio and the web. Pretty epic. Especially for how laid back he is on the show.
And then there's Andy. Read about him, too(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Breckman). His contributions to folklore and television are also impressive. Not to mention his tie-in w/ Kid Jersey.
So much WFMU and Internet radio history on this show.
Thanks for expanding my world FOTs.

If you think Ken is well loved here, you should check out how much love he gets in... uh... the other... uh, forum, uh never mind.

c-town?
-
(i can't read c-town at work because of the artful displays that occasionally grace the boards).
-
I like Ken.
And Chinatown still exists?
Well, I'm in good company if they hate on Ken as much as they presumably hate on me. I wouldn't even know where to find it to confirm my suspicions, and I don't care to find out how.
-
Can anyone recommend some classics or must-listens from SSD?
-
12/12/2001 Andy and Arnon
08/30/2006 100 Jokes
09/28/2005 Octoroons
06/29/2005 Rock Paper Scissors
06/30/2004 Perfect Murder
For some reason the link to one of the best (Stay on the Phone in Ten Words or Less) is down.
I kind of feel that if you like one you'd like them all (and vice-versa).
-
Anyone in the NYC area who hasn't should try and make it to the next live show. They're always great.
-
Laurie, you don't need to worry: we don't talk about you in Chinatown.
-
Once you're familiar with the Ken & Andy / SSD dynamic, there's nothing funnier than all the Trainwreck episodes. I'd say they're not for SSD beginners, but once you're in that universe, they're amazing. Just go to the archive and search for "trainwreck". There's a whole bunch of them.
Also, one of my favorites is the one where Ken and Andy goes through the radio dial and reads back what is being said on other radio stations... kind of difficult to explain but it's amazing. Think it's this one:
February 6, 2008: Ken and Andy Channel the Radio Dial
-
Laurie, you don't need to worry: we don't talk about you in Chinatown.
Yeah, no Laurie talk from any of the three of them.

Don't hate, player. I'm not the one starting Buffcoat Sucks threads.

That was definitely amazing. And I second Stay on the Phone in Ten Words or Less as my possible favorite of all time- if the archive link is indeed gone, I'm pretty sure I have it somewhere if anyone wants.

That was my doing. I resented him for abandoning us.
Besides, truth is truth.

I'm more of a biter, actually.
-
When you think of it, why should sucking be bad anyway? And why are "that bites" and "that sucks" more or less synonymous, when "you suck" and "you bite" aren't? And then there's the scornful "bite me," which has never made sense to me, since that act would seem to punish the bitee more than the biter.
So much to ponder.

Like This American Life*, I'll go through phases where I never miss Prank Patrol for like 6 months, and then get burned out on it for a year or more.
One of my favorite Prank Patrol moments is one time (God knows what episode) when their call screener was late in arriving, and Ken or Andy mentions that they're going to read him the riot act when he arrives, which spiraled into a discussion about the actual 18th century Riot Act. This culminated in them finding the actual text of the Act online and Andy furiously reading it to him when he did arrive, without context or explanation.
I guess you kind of have to hear it, but I'll often make my self laugh thinking about Andy hoarsely hollering "By ORDER of our SOVERIGN LORD THE KING!! etc etc"
* (Probably the only time these two shows will ever be compared)
-
One of my favorite SSDs is them calling to various embassies of the world, starting to ask a question, then suddenly sneezing in the middle of the phone conversation to measure which nation is the most courteous by how quickly they say "Bless You," or "'Gesundheit."
It is sidesplittingly hilarious and in the archives.
-
My favorite is the Electroshock show, where Ken and Andy alternate between being hooked up to a 9 volt battery. Ken goes as low as offering a kid Pokemon cards in order to get Andy shocked.

Yeah, that's a classic-- it, along with the one where they have the troop of Webelos into the studio, were how I got my old roommate into SSD (which I've been listening to for longer than I've been listening to the Best Show). It makes me sad to hear Andy refer to the non-UCB theater shows as being like being in detention, because I tend to prefer them-- their Gypsy Cab episode from a few weeks ago was great, even if the sound quality was terrible at times.
-
I had no idea this show was so goofy.
I listened to a podcast a while ago and i thought it was funny, but I had over committed myself w/a ton of podcasts and this one was one of the ones that got cut.
I've clearly been missing out.

Thanks to everybody on this thread for guiding me towards some good stuff to listen to during my boring job. I enjoyed this one:
August 30, 2006: 100 Jokes Show (from October 7, 1998) (that's how it's listed at http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/sd )
The challenge: can listeners call in 100 jokes in 60 minutes? The fact that the show aired in 1998 results in a lot of Monica Lewinsky material. Ah, the good old days, when Lewinsky was our most pressing national issue ...
-
She pressed the national issue all right.
What!? Don't judge!
-
I love this one:
<< October 1, 2003: The Make You Say "No" Game with Tom Scharpling and Scott (from July 2001) >>
this one's great, too:
<< September 10, 2008: Reuniting the Beatles >>
oh, and this one:
<< # August 15, 2007: God Only Knows >>
I love 7-Second Delay. The commemorative plate hanging in my kitchen says so.
-
The one from a couple weeks ago about getting a list of one hundred independent music stores was really good, even though it sounds like it would be terrible. It really makes a difference when Andy cares.
-
I thought that was one of their worst.
-
I liked the recent gypsy cab episode.
-
Yeah, that was more like it.
-
I loved Andy's passion towards the end of it. I thought it was a lot of fun to listen to. The cab ride episode was pretty good, too, for much the same reason.

That was definitely amazing. And I second Stay on the Phone in Ten Words or Less as my possible favorite of all time- if the archive link is indeed gone, I'm pretty sure I have it somewhere if anyone wants.
I would love to hear that, Allison, if you've got it. Seems to be missing from the Archives.
-
Hey, are there any NYCers around on the 7th? they're doing another show at the UCB ...
-
Someone referenced a Fargo, ND record store ("Mother's") that has now moved to Moorhead, MN.
I'm just sayin'.

I've been to all but one of the others, but it looks like I'll be missing this one.

Here you go! (http://www.mediafire.com/?0yloyw4mtnz) I also included "The Original Stay on the Phone Contest (from June, 1998)" because, to be honest, I don't really remember the difference or if there is one.

There was no SSD last night, so they ran Stay on the Phone in Ten Words or Less as a rerun, so it should be available in the archives (or to download if you're a podcast subscriber).

All thanks to MEEEEE!
(Ken asked for suggestions on Facebook, and since this episode had been mentioned here, I suggested it.)

I was just wondering about the timing of that! It seemed like a lame coincidence on my part to have uploaded it the very same day. Thank you, in that case- I needed an actual reason to relisten to it.

As a big Laura Cantrell fan I like the March 25th show. Her voice and her songs are so lovely.

I'm crying at work now listening to this episode. "Abort"!

I really enjoyed Andy getting the "loneliest guy in New Jersey" at the end. He just didn't want to hang up.
-
I love the "Hand Me Down that Can o' Beans" Song.
-
The "Make You Say 'No" Game" episode is a good one, plus Tom co-hosts with Andy (no Ken on this one). It's from July 2001, but the archive is at October 1, 2003.
Another good one with Tom co-hosting (along with another guy from M**k) is 8/11/04, where callers ask for answering machine suggestions.

I was listening to this one today: Tom hangs up on DJ Terre T: that was the greatest.
