This Tuesday on The Best Show: in addition to @JamesUrbaniak we have VENTURE BROS creator JACKSON PUBLICK in the studio!
I'm a huge Venture Bros. fan and am really looking forward to this.
-
I like James Urbaniak - wonder what the connection/plug is? I haven't ever seen him as part of the Alt Comedy scene.
Maybe he read that thread about the sequel to Henry Fool?
-
James Urbaniak is voice of Dr. Rusty Venture on the Venture Bros.

*nervous laughter* Adult Swim died for me when they quit showing Aqua Teen and Sealab.
-
So as I understand it, Tom knows everyone that has ever made me laugh.
When is the kid who used to throw his carton of milk up against the window in 3rd grade going to be on the show?

Last time I checked Aqua Teen was still on.
And I know they were still playing Sealab reruns as recent as about six months ago.

Aqua Teen hasn't been officially canceled, but then neither has Space Ghost: Coast to Coast. They're still playing reruns of these shows, yes.
The point of my comment is that I don't watch any of the second generation stuff, much less the newest stuff. No Venture Brothers.
Still glad James Urbaniak is on the show. Maybe I'll call in and talk to him about his L&O:CI guest spot.
-
Mr. Urbaniak also did an excellent R. Crumb in American Splendor and his Twitter feed is consistently outstanding.

I hate to sound like I'm trying to pick a fight, but I think there's a new season of ATHF slated for later this year...

Yes! I thought of that recently too - he was quite a creep on that episode.
I really dig Jackson Publick too -- Dang it, mama has to take some people to dinner tomorrow -- so I'm not sure how much of the show I"m going to miss.

I hadn't heard that - good. I guess? I wasn't that jazzed by the 6 they made this season.

It's staggering think how Jackson Publick & Doc Hammer have control over nearly all aspects of the production process for the Venture Bros. And how amazing it all turns out in the end. It has to be the cartooning-equivalent of running one of those super-marathons.
Plus, Jackson linked to a Sound of Young America interview on his blog a while back, through which I eventually became aware of the Best Show. He never stops giving!

In regards to not liking anything past Sealab and Aqua Teen. I loved both of those shows, but I don't think they hold up when compared to The Venture Bros. The Venture Bros is well written and doesn't just rely on crazy antics to be funny. It's character driven and gets funnier and funnier as you learn the characters. That being said it also has some great crazy antics and some awesomely hilarious jokes and fight scenes. Personally as a huge comics and cartoon nerd The Bros appeal to me especially for all the references to old cartoons and comics.
And not to get too technical, but Aqua Teen and Sealab are kind of Second Generation compared to Space Ghost, Ghost Planet, and Brak show. The stuff Adult Swim is making now is 4th or 5th generation at the very least. It's been around a while now.
-
I will just dive in and say that anyone who loved Sealab and doesn't love Frisky Dingo (esp after watching at least 4 episodes... it's very plot-centric in a weird way) is ca-razy. CA-RAZY!
Also, looking forward to this week's show!
-
I'm usually not that into Adult Swim, with obvious exceptions, but Venture Brothers is great. Genuinely funny. It took me so long to break down and watch it because I assumed I'd hate it. I'm glad to be proved wrong.

You lost me here.

You did get too technical, because you are incorrect. Adult Swim was applied to Space Ghost well into its production run - seven years in, in fact. So you can call it "first generation" if you want - I choose not to, because it predates Adult Swim. I was a fan of SGCTC well before there was an Adult Swim.
And Aqua Teen Hunger Force premiered in December 2000, before Adult Swim premiered in September 2001 (and only nine days after the Brak Show premiere). Hard to make a case for ATHF being a "second generation" show.

To those interested in checking the show out by more legal means, adultswim.com offers a handful of episodes here: http://www.adultswim.com/shows/venturebros/indexpage.html#video
I suggest '¡Viva los Muertos!' with the dystopian Scooby Doo gang!

To anyone who doesnt "get" The Venture Bro's:
Just please watch the first season and u will become hooked.
And it just gets better and better after that. The show really grows on u!
Anyone who has the patience for the pace of TBSoWFMU will def "get" The Venture Bro is short order.
The writing is so deliciously funny and the jokes go by so quick and clever----u have to pause and replay the DVD so as not miss even 30 seconds of the brilliant writing
coz yr laughing so hard.
There are very few shows that have made me laugh as hard as The Venture Bros (of course TBSoWFMU is on that short list-duh! )
And i'm not even a comic nerd*, so i'm not even getting ALL of the jokes!
Thats how densely packed with The Funny this show is!
Man characters really really grow on u! I truly am very pumped for this weeks show!
*So Lady FOTS fear not and don't be putoff by the Comic booky refs. There's so much OTHER funny stuff in there!

I follow James Urbaniak on Twitter. He's very funny. Looking forward to hearing him on the show.

The nerdiest call I can think of:
"Hey, James. I loved you on Law and Order: Criminal Intent, the part where you called that guy a rutting pig was awesome! When that show comes up on the DVR schedule, they say Andrew McCarthy plays the doctor. It must have been a last minute substitution, huh? Well, you really hit it out of the park. I think you did a way better job than Andrew McCarthy would've."
-
Just watched a Venture Bros. where Stiv Bators and Lydia Lunch are namedropped. Also noticed that the music is done by Foetus.

In reference to the old comics, they do Fantastic Four references (the impossibles) a Dr. Strange parody (Dr. Orpheus), the twins pajamas are Aquaman and Spiderman etc. I think the comics references are pretty obvious don't know how I lost you.
The rest of my statements:
I stand corrected. I guess I always just thought of Space Ghost as the first generation of Adult Swim because it's what I used to watch until they started running more "adult" cartoons. Oops.
