I woke my wife up with my guffawing at Paul's description of "Go Ask Alice."  That book was considered such heavy duty stuff when I was growing up. Reading it was right up there with "Forever" by Judy Blume as some kind of ridiculous, arbitrary rite of passage.

On another topic, albeit overlapping, I find the cover of "Freak Wharf" wonderfully disturbing and mesmerizing. There is no freak in it, which would have been an obvious choice.   Instead, it is a painting of Paul, dressed as a captain, with a perplexed or perhaps disgusted look on his face (pipe out of mouth in surprise?). You (or just I?) get the feeling that he is a wayward captain who pulled into the wrong port and is currently looking out upon the freaks.  Leaving it to the imagination was a wonderful idea.

I need to find hobbies.

I see it more as a look of grim determination. Like, maybe he's the only captain gutsy or crazy enough to sail to the freak wharf, which for some reason is an important job that needs to be done.  "I didn't ask to sail to this Freak Wharf, but this is the life Fate has chosen for me."

I plan on purchasing it later this week. I can't wait to hear it, but I figure it will probably be two or so weeks until I get it. I will be crazed with anticipation by the time it arrives.

You have a very good take on it. And I may have to say "I didn't ask to sail to this Freak Wharf" every day at work from now on.

And Tom is mentioned towards the end somewhere.

Also, if all of you could stop discussing this album until I get my copy I would really appreciate it.

Not to crap on your interpretation, but if you buy the CD and see the gatefold cover the whole thing falls apart.  I guess the full picture was not included with the digital release.

edit: I can produce a jpg, if called upon.

Add me to the "preordered the CD and now anxiously waiting" list! (The fact that I'm not in the place to which it's being sent is part of the problem in my case.)

Damn.

I would love a jpeg if it is easily available.

Now I am sad about two things. (1) The bad interpretation of the cover, and (2) the fact that - out of sheer coincidence - I had a bit called "President Baby" on my podcast a few years back (He says things like "Mister Gorbachev, tear down that baby gate" and "There's no fighting the two booby system"). Needless to say, PFT's President Baby is ten times funnier.

Again, I will wait until my CD arrives to pass judgement. Because those lines are pretty fuckin' funny.

I loved it. I was kinda bummed out I haven't gotten to see his material live in the past few years (although I've been lucky to attend his Largo shows as of late), and he was saying that it was a lot different than Impersonal, which might be my favorite comedy album ever.

But this is a great album. I've listened to it like 3 times already.

I've listened to it a few times since I got mine in the mail over the weekend. It's hilarious, as one would expect. The New Dads bit is probably the best thing on it. I really enjoyed listening to the Riff Suite too.

And what can I say about the album art? It raises more questions than it answers. Prepare to be freaked out!  ;D

Yes. ALL TIME CLASSIC artwork.

Only complaint: A little text on the spine of the case wouldn't have been a bad idea, so I wouldn't have to worry about never ever finding it again once I put it on my CD shelf.

It totally is! And the "Go Ask Alice" closer had me laughing like an idiot on mass transit. Worth being judged by my fellow commuters!

This album made me think of how people who live together start to sound alike, use the same expressions, share inside jokes, etc.  Unlike "Impersonal", on which I detected only a little bit of Scharplingness, this Freak Wharf feels almost like a "live in the studio" appearance.  Paul may owe Tom some scratch, frankly.  I'll have to go back through it and make special note of the moments that feel particularly "Best Show-ish", but it's palpable.  Wonderful, and palpable.

Palpderful.

Am I wrong?

Anyway... I think it's great.  Is it short, though?  I was just starting to really get comfortable and giggly when all of a sudden, boom, "that's it for me, folks!".

Just got it last night and annoyed all of my co-workers by laughing out loud all the way through the cd... twice. I think my current favorite line is "This year starts with a two, that's nuts. Church is still around. Even God has moved on at this point." Mr. F. Tompkins is doing it right.

I ordered mine from AST (not a preorder) and got it over the weekend. I think I ordered mine on the 5th or 6th of December.

I also got Brent Weinbach's The Night Shift, which I can honestly call the weirdest thing I've ever heard.

Man, if I'd known how good the cover art is, I would've waited for the CD (instead of downloading mp3s.)  PFT in a captain get up!  With squid legs!  All done in an oil painting!  Damn my luck.

The comedy's alright too, I guess.

I got it off of iTunes, so I hope those prints of the cover they were discussing come out sooner rather than later.

The ~15 minutes of riffing at the start prove, as if proof was needed, that PFT is the best.  Can't wait for his new special in the spring.
