Title: FOTLabs: Mail Art 'Extreeeem' Edition
Post by: KickTheBobo on January 25, 2010, 09:42:29 PM
Hi All,

Thanks again to all that participated in the previous Mail Art project. Hopefully by now everyone has pretty much sent & received their envelopes.

So what I would like to get started is a master list for the Mail Art Extreeeem Edition. This is NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART, mind you. You will be required to send a piece out to everyone on the list.

Say we have 15 people sign up. Everyone receives a listing with all the addresses on it. Depending on how many people sign up, you will roughly have a week to send out EACH envelope piece. This may go on for months. You could do them all in a weekend if you prefer, but please do not drag your feet on this. Out of respect for everyone else playing the game you must commit to sending out. Do NOT wait 2 months and then send out a whole stack of half-assed pieces.

Yes, it will be a lot of work on your part BUT - you will also be receiving a BUTTLOAD of mail coming in!

Any questions/ comments can be directed here. I will be copying this message to all that participated last time. Signups will close in roughly one week.

note: please remember to use your board nickname when corresponding. I may not know that 'CrunchAndMunch' from the board is actually Gary Dinkle from Kalamazoo Michigan when I receive your email for signup.

Thanks, hope too hear from you all!

Let's do this, people. I'm going to counter his warnings with enthusiasm. YOU CAN DO THIS. IT WILL BE AWESOME. ETC! ETC! Sorry, that's all the positive affirmation I can muster in the morning. I look forward to getting mail from Mr. Dinkle and the rest of you.

Fart. I think I need to bow out this round, since I start a new job next Monday and I'm likely to be preoccupied for the next month reading tons of new stuff.

You make a convincing and creative argument, KtB.

(The postage you quoted is not entirely accurate, that's for like bulk shipments etc. But no matter. I'm in.)

Mail goes out tomorrow, people. I cheated and did 5 x 4 or whatever the card size is. We have no real envelopes in this house.

I think I'm gonna try and make something each week and send them out via random order. I worked on #3 a bit today. Assembling these little packages is as much fun as getting stuff, in my opinion.

who knows, maybe by week 5 I will get lazy and just send everyone remaining a photocopy of my butt.

It's taking me a bit longer to get things together than I had originally thought. I sent out my first one yesterday, but due to time and expenses I think I'm going to have to change my plans to something more efficient.
Vague!

As someone who has never participated in such a project or seen it in action, but has imagined what it'd be like...

is there an example of something somewhere for viewing?
Is this just where people turn envelopes into flat drawn art pieces?

There's no mail art for dummies, so I turn to you!

Finally got one! Thanks Kristina/JustSheaNo! Yes, clowns are quite frightening. My Dad had a delayed midlife crisis and got into "clowning" for a while. Somehow it also had something to do with church. Gives me the shivers.

that is the funniest thing I have heard all week (and it's been a week of funny stuff). thank you.

When my dad pulled a mid-life, he started refinishing furniture and baking. I have seriously never tasted a better apple pie or blueberry muffin than the ones he was making en masse back in '86-'87.

Am glad you liked it. Sorry it was lo-quality, but I was working with what I got.  For the rest of you, it was an amalgam of all the direct mail advertising of clowns/magicians that I got over a two week period, cut out and glued together.

This guy was by far my favorite, if by favorite you understand most terrifying. His button says DABBY DO IT!

So scary. My Dad was "Tommy Twinkletoes" - the best part was that he had a booth at a church fair to pick his clown name, and a 3-year old created that gem...mainly because all of the others were FILTHY.

Me too! Awesome! Especially appreciated as I've been filming a lot of questionable "art" recently for work. A good reminder that making things is still good.

Received a cryptic set of photos from Trotskie today! Not quite sure of the theme, but the whole set had a Lynchian vibe to them.

Also, can I just say how much I love "matte, with border" photos? a LOT! thanks again, Trot and to all other Extreeemists.

also got a note in there referencing "KTB's rules of photography". Can't recall what stream of bullshit I might have spewed out on the subject in threads past, besides maybe "No Dongs" which I believe to be an early Dogme 95 tenet (later revised to "MORE dongs", iirc)

Me, too. Also, I was a lot worse at this than I realized, so I owe a a bunch of art. I promise you, I'm doing it, not just thinking about it. Just takes a little longer than planned with all the stuff going on.

Sorry.

Good news everyone! I sent out ALL THE REST of my long overdue mail art TODAY. As will be apparent once you open them, they are mostly things I did during my last semester. I enjoyed them though, so I hope you do too. It's so tempting to keep mailing stuff once you mail it the first time. I come across something cool and I think, oh, I should mail that to someone!

I am in the process of moving and am no longer at my KY address. They will forward stuff up to me but as soon as I am settled in to my new address, I will notify you with my new address.

Thanks to the packages/pictures I got from David, KtB, and Trotskie. They are awesome.

I will be sending my stuff out THIS MONTH! DO IT (reminder to self)

Alright, it's cleanup time!

I'm putting out the notice: If you have not sent out ALL your mail art to the recipient list, you have TWO WEEKS from this date (Aug 27th, 2010) to get the remainder of your pieces OUT.

Fair is fair, folks. To those who fulfilled their obligations: Kudos! It was a fun experiment, and thanks for participating.

If you are in a deficit: get on the ball and finish this thing up!

The consequences for not fulfilling your commitment will be severe, to say the least. Navel oranges and a car battery will be involved. you've been warned!
