Title: What's the first movie (or few movies) you remember seeing in a theater?
Post by: Smelodies on April 25, 2010, 08:10:45 PM
Inspired by ScottP who posted the Breaking Away trailer.  That took me back.  Outside of Star Wars, Superman, Jaws, and movies of that ilk, Breaking Away is one of the earliest I remember seeing.

First was The Sword and the Stone. I remember very little about it.

Second was Dirty Harry. I was 13, and traumatized. I still get a little squidgy about big guys wearing leather gloves.

Masters of the Universe.

I loved the He-Man cartoon, so my folks took me to see the live-action Dolph Lundgren vehicle, and as they tell it, I started crying when Skeletor came on, so my dad had to escort me outside.

Somehow I remember seeing Star Wars sometime in 1981. They must have rereleased it in anticipation of the sequel. I talked to my Dad a lot throughout, describing for him what was going on. I would made the future me absolutely furious.

I somewhat remember seeing Disney's The Fox and the Hound, which would've been out when I was about five.

More clearly: Return of the Jedi when I was seven.

Vague memories of seeing Peter Pan (the 1953 cartoon) when I was three or four; clear memories of seeing the original Parent Trap when I was five.

God, I loved going to the movies when I was a kid.  By the time I was seven, we lived within walking distance of our town's only movie theater, and I would go faithfully every weekend and as many nights as my parents would allow.  It cost a quarter to get in, and I'd generally have another quarter for popcorn etc.  One Saturday afternoon, I remember, my best friend Eric (two years my junior) and I were denied entry to Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?.  Why the Roxy was showing that on a day traditionally reserved for childish fare, I do not know.  Another Saturday, we were allowed in to see Thunderball; it shocked my mother no end when I told her what I'd just been watching.

Oh, it was fun.

I probably saw Empire in theaters the first time through, but only have vague memories of being in the front row of a theater for it. The first movie I have full memory of seeing as a kid is "Spacehunter: Adventures In The Forbidden Zone". I'm 99% sure we saw "Streets of Fire" the year after. They should have thrown my parents in jail.

Masters of the Universe.

I loved the He-Man cartoon, so my folks took me to see the live-action Dolph Lundgren vehicle, and as they tell it, I started crying when Skeletor came on, so my dad had to escort me outside.

Samir, how did you say He-Man growing up? I bet the British pronounced it as "HE-min", sort of rhyming with demon. Don't lie, man, we'll know.

First movie(s) I saw that I remember were both of the Cinderella and Fantasia re-releases that my parents took me to in the early '70s but I've kind of blended them together in my head.

I don't remember the first one.  My parents took me to see Return of the Jedi but I wouldn't go in the theater for some reason (probably worried about my snob cred).  I also remember my mom making us leave during National Lampoon's European Vacation due to the on-screen filth.

I know I saw other movies before this but my parents took me to Top Gun when I was 5, mainly because it was shot in San Diego and that's where we were living at the time. Definitely did not make it through the whole thing.

Seeing Star Wars is definitely the first movie where I have easy recall of the experience, because it played for months and months-all that summer of '77 and beyond. I think I saw it in the theaters multiple times - at least 3 or 4, because you'd go to birthday parties of your classmates and the activity was going to see Star Wars.

The cartoons I mentioned earlier are really just snatches of memory for me.

I assume by filth, you mean she objected to that movie's unfortunate interpretation of the Rusty character. EuroRusty is easily the worst of the Four Official Rusties. "Hotel Hell Vacation" is not yet considered Vacation canon and I can't speak to the Rusty Griswold portrayed therein.

Pete's Dragon is the probably the earliest movie I remember going to the theater to see, but I remember seeing Smokey and the Bandit, 9 to 5, and Flash Gordon pretty early on.  Now I'm going to IMDB to see if I can put together a timeline and test my memory.

It think this freaked me out too, but Robocop had a lasting impression on me.  I remember hiding behind the large guy seated in front of me during the bloody parts.

WHAT was my mom thinking?! Taking a 7 year old girl to see ROBOCOP?! Although, I guess it was the 80's -when you could take a kid to something like Robocop and not think twice. Other than that, I have pretty fond memories of seeing The Chipmunk Adventure in theaters.

Holy shit I was about to write that.  I got my parents/brothers to take me FIVE TIMES.  I guess it works out to be cheaper than day camp.

First PG-rated movie I remember seeing was Murder By Death.  I thought it was the funniest thing ever.  Now I see Peter Sellers in that "Sidney Wang" make-up and I want to punch myself for laughing.

Don't know what the first movie I saw in a theater was. Probably a Disney reissue. I think we went to the theaters to see Fantasia, and Dumbo, and Pinocchio, and Song of The South ... the early 1970s was maybe the last time that Disney re-released "Song of the South" before they started pretending that the whole thing never happened.

Another early movie memory: My mom yelling at the theater manager for showing violence-laden trailers for R-rated movies during afternoon kiddie matinées. I was pretty embarrassed at the time, but in retrospect: Good for you, Mom!

Here's some more early theater viewings I remember:

I thought Carol Channing was in the movie version, but I guess I'm wrong.

Hansel & Gretel ...Claymation, originally released in 1954 ... pretty well-done, as I recall.

As Altamont was to Woodstock, "Hugo the Hippo" was the evil offspring of "Yellow Submarine". I had to get some assistance from the internet to remember the title of this one. I know I saw it in the theater, and I know I was bothered by it ... in a way I couldn't quite understand at the time. My research on the 'nets has confirmed that this film was astoundingly misguided (http://www.filmthreat.com/features/1341/) and that, as a children's film, it made some choices that were just plain bizarre (http://www.badmovieplanet.com/unknownmovies/reviews/rev411.html) . This movie could have achieved "Song of the South" levels of infamy, but I think the world just made a collective decision to ignore it instead.

The 1970s left a lot of scars on my psyche, but surely "Benji" wasn't tainted by any of that bad Travis-Bickle mojo, right? Right?? Wait, let's ask the Germans ...

 Thanks, Germany. Thanks a lot.

I agree. Good for your mom! I remember going to a matinee of "Going In Style" with my dad. Granted, not a kid movie, but PG and in the afternoon. Kids would be there.  I remember absolutely nothing about the feature presentation. All I remember was a trailer showing tidal waves of blood coming out of creepy hotel elevators.

What amazes me is that someone back then had the stones to make a trailer that told you nothing about the film other than "Blood coming out of elevators. Dissonant music that includes howling voices. Brace yourself" followed by the equally-vague title "The Shining."

Probably obvious, but I'm sure the trailer was Kubrick's idea.  He tried to control the marketing of all his films.

Nope. It was Scatman Crothers' idea. Kubrick planned to cut what was going to be a pretty standard horror trailer, and Scatman kept calling him up and saying "Just the blood, Stan! Just the blood!" Shortly before his death, Crothers was also the one who had to talk Kubrick out of his "fanatical, Lobo-fueled obsession" with casting Claude Akins as Sgt. Hartman in Full Metal Jacket, which made it possible for R. Lee Ermey to later win Kubrick over.

I submit these with special attention to the fact that I was 8 in 1986:

Raising Arizona (1986)
The Golden Child (1987)
The 'Burbs (1989)

I may or may not have also seen Sweet Liberty. I vaguely remember Alan Alda in a tri-corner hat.

(I am sure I saw a movie in the theater before these, but I don't remember them).

The Little Mermaid.

I wasn't born yet when it originally came out, so it must have been some children's matinee sort of thing. I remember being terrified at the end and biting my finger so hard that it left a mark for a long time after (at least in my imagination at the time- I haven't verified this or anything).

The first movie I saw in the theater was The Care Bears Movie.  I was about 5 or 6 and watched it in a theater with a whole gaggle of other little kids - if I remember correctly it was a matinee screening for church groups.  Anyway, probably five or six adult chaperones and about 30 little kids.  I don't think the film lasted more than ten minutes before the first reel got caught in the film gate.  Stunned, we all watched in horror as Funshine Bear's face melted through the celluloid until just a bright white light was projected on the screen with the fap fap fap of the broken film strip and a bit of smoke wafting out of the projector booth.  All of the kids erupted in screaming/tears and the theater manager came in and told us all to leave.

Most of my first moviegoing experiences involve me leaving the theater in fear.  Vigo the Carpathian in "Ghostbusters 2" was too much for me, and the ending battle in "The Little Mermaid" had me going to the lobby and assuming the fetal position.  Although it's also possible that those aren't exactly the firsts but just stand out more vividly because of the whole being terrified thing.

There was another in there, called Never Cry Wolf about a guy who has to live up north (Yukon?  Alaska?) and study wolves for a year.  I remember a weird micturating scene, where he's marking his territory.

I appear to be in the right demographic. Flash Gordon and Watership Down were among the first movies I saw. I think I saw them at the same time. My uncle took me to one and maybe decided it was too scary and moved me to another theater, decided that was too scary, and then moved me to another. I don't know exactly what happened there. I know they both scared the bejeezus out of me. And intrigued me. Pete's Dragon was also one.

BTW, Never Cry Wolf was one of my very favorite movies as a kid. I saw it again, about five years ago, and I was surprised at how good it was. It has some depth to it that I didn't quite grasp when I was a kid.

And we all know how well Flash Gordon has held up over the years!
