about which there may still be lingering questions concerning Krügel of Men, Rafael Santana...

and the nature of the background vocals

Thanks to Tom also, for sending me down the path of the Felt Letters' 600000 Bands 7", among other musical avenues.

I'm interested in related purchases you've made, shows you've attended, movies you've screened—whatever paths The Best Show has sent you tumbling down aimlessly. For instance, is it the fault of the FOT that Clifford is no longer available on Netflix?

This is on my car. People with bumper stickers usually annoy me, but this one was just too damn colorful to pass up.

I've seen Clifford, A Family Underground (the ICP thing),  Mr. Brooks, Fitzcarraldo, and I have Death Wish 3 in my NetFlix queue, all thanks to the Best Show. Also, I doubt I would have any Black Flag/Minutemen/MDC/Minor Threat records were it not for Hammerhead.

For Christmas I asked for and got the Big Dipper anthology with tom's liner notes.  I would be happy to purchase some music by The Cherry Valance, if I could find any, but as it stands now I attained some through *cough* alternative means.  I had a copy of "Motherless Brooklyn" by Jonathan Lethem, intending to read it, but actually read it after Tom said it was good.  'Tis.  Rented Clifford.  That's all I can think of right now, but I'm sure there's more.

The Steve Coogan box set (I was already a fan but wouldn't have known it existed if not for the discussions here)

I bought "Do It" from iTunes right after the first time Tom played it, not realizing that I'd be hearing it once a week whether I owned it or not.  (I'm not complaining, I still listen to it on my own initiative quite a lot.)

Ram. I never gave solo McCartney a chance until I took up Tom's recommendation. I dug it and have since given other McCartney material a try. Mainly Wings. Still can't get into a lot of his recent stuff.

Haha. Twice, I've come very close to buying this book on the strength of Tom's recommendation before realizing that I would probably regret it.

I got the "Where the Action Is!" LA Nuggets compilation 4 months ago and I don't think I've listened to the whole thing yet.

Nixonland is a slog, and a depressing one, but every time I read about the Tea Party I keep thinking back to it. So it's probably at least somewhat useful.

Also: I bought the Cherry Valence's TCV3 after hearing Tom play "Sunglasses and Headlights", but unfortunately there wasn't anything on the album I liked as much. I guess that's the music critic equivalent of the "sometimes the b'ar eats you" scenario.

I read Nixonland before Tom did and I didn't find it a slog, though I am generally interested in the history of the period.  In fact, I found it pretty brilliant and it made me want to read the author's previous book, about Barry Goldwater.  That Tom thought so highly of it made me think more highly of Tom.

On a related note, a few weeks ago on NPR they were talking about the Tea Party (or GOP or conservative or whatever)'s "Woodstock" and how they rock bands and rappers, and just before one of them started rapping my wife shut off the radio. No matter. I knew exactly how the rap was gonna go (although I missed the rapper's name. Could be Hi-Caliber (http://www.examiner.com/x-5697-Grassroots-Politics-Examiner~y2009m12d3-Right-Wing-Tea-Party-rapper-HiCaliber-is-armed-to-rhyme-Obama-down/), I don't know, let's say it is): "My name's Hi-Caliber and I'm here to say, the Tea Party Movement is here to stay." BOOM. I should have been a rapper.

Back on topic, I just got Ted Leo and The Pharmacists' "The Oldest House" 7" 'on eBay cause I was stick of hearing everyone bragging about getting it on the last episode. The only store that had it, Newbury Comics in the Providence Place Mall,  wasn't even listed as taking part in RSD. None of the other shop had it.

I bought a copy of Clifford for $8 at a used record store.  When I went to the cashier, he said "This JUST arrived like two days ago.  Is it really worth eight bucks?"

I didn't have time to go into the details, but gave him a firm yes.

I would've purchased "More Information Than You Require" eventually, but Hodgman's appearances on the show inspired me buy it promptly.

My daughter fell in love with ABBA because of TBS. She was just learning how to sit up when the ABBA Box was in the midst of it's reign on TBS and was into them immediately. She got the Definitive Collection and the DVD for her 2nd birthday, and the book and box set for Christmas. She has looked at the book so many times that pages are falling out and I've had to tape the book back together.

I've wanted it since 2005.
I've heard passing mentions of it by Tom on Best Show owning this and loving it.
Then I heard a deep cut presumably from this box set during the Marathon. My live stream sparkled.
So I saved money, and finally ordered this from the band's website.  Now I have it, and I love it.

But that is the ABBA box. It begs for a photo that is pretty much on scale.

Richard Harris' soundtrack to the ill-fated, all-hobo adaptation of The Shining he attempted to mount on Broadway. For those curious, it wasn't the hobo actors that caused it to be shut down in the middle of the first show, it was that the hobo set designers never figured out how to stop the blood from rushing straight from the elevators on stage right out into the audience.

That is so awesome. Your daughter certainly has good taste. Mine's a blossoming ABBA fan as well, although she simply refers to the band as a whole as "the dancing queen."

As for purchases I can thank TBS for:

- Nixonland: Can't say enough good things about it, although it isn't hard to see why some folks might get bored/frustrated reading it. Making it to the end of the 700+ pages is a big commitment. I'm about 1/4 of the way through and got many good laughs out of Nixon's uncontrollable urge to control things.

- Solo McCartney: Never a diehard Beatles fan, I was surprised how quickly I took to the Wings stuff. It's fantastic.

- Look Around You Series 1: It don't get much funnier than this.

- Panera Bread: Really good black bean soup - especially for a chain restaurant. Don't eat there often but without Tom's accolades I probably never would've tried it.

The LA Nuggets box.

This is *sort of* a purchase, but we took our kids to America's Incredible Pizza* this weekend.  They had go-karts, and I thought of the podcast I'd listened to the day before.  Somehow I'd never actually gone go-karting in my life, and Tom's words echoed in my head about "driving 60 or 70 miles an hour, parking, and going 20 miles an hour."  My four-year-old loved it, though.

*  which felt like a cross between a Simpsons episode and a Best Show rant.  And the pizza ain't so incredible.

I don't know if I've ever heard Tom's go-karting rant, but I have to admit that I am pro-go-kart.  Not so much as an adult, but my dad started my brother and I on go-karts at about 8 years old, and I think we're better drivers for it.  He bumped us up to Chevy Malibu wagon training when I was 12 and my brother was 14... Could've gone a lot worse if not for the karts.

Just bought tales designed to thrizzle vol. 4 today at the comic book store across from where I work - at $4.50 with 25% off (store discount for the month of may) it was like 3.25, the cost of a cookie at most places in midtown. Respect to Kupperman - the jokes and drawings are both equally awesome.

Not quite a purchase, but I went to my local library the other day. By the counter they have a spinner of Graphic Novels. I'm not particularly interested in comic books (I'm not against them, I just don't have the time/money to be interested), but something made me give it a spin. Guess what I saw. Tales Designed To Thrizzle vol 1!!!!! Kind of odd that something I would never have heard of if it were not because of The Best Show turning up in a small town library 4000 miles away. So I borrowed it.

I bought the Snake and Bacon collection and the Tales to Thrizzle collection after hearing Michael Kupperman last week and looking up some of his stuff.  I got the Steve Coogan collection for my birthday this year from my my ladyfriend (who was already a fan, so I guess the Best Show gets partial credit on this one), the Big Dipper collection. I feel like there's more, but I can't think of what they are right now.

I kept seeing this thread and thinking how I can't really attribute any purchases solely to the Best Show (which I sort of consider a convergence of things I already think are awesome), but now I just ordered Tales Designed To Thrizzle!

Probably, Ted Leo. The Best Show did remind me how much I used to love Clifford.

I was around 10, and my Mom rented for me what she thought was Clifford the Big Red Dog. The VHS box had a picture of Martin Short in front of a big dog house. She rented it, thinking nothing of it, and took the movie home for me to watch.

The whole family ended up loving the movie. It became sort of a family movie that we rented all the time to show to new people. But as I got older, I forgot about Clifford. It was just this past year listening to The Best Show that Tom reminded me of my love of Clifford. And this past Thanksgiving I bought the DVD, and we again watched it as a family.

The movie holds up and is both watchable for children and adults.

I know I would always rent it when my cousins came to visit and watch it alone because everyone I knew hated it. Finally I felt accepted.

Man, Emma, I just re-gifted my Secret Santa Truck Nutz to my little hipster brother, who's going to attach them to his fixed-gear bike (sorry, RegularJoe, but you've got to admit it's an inspired idea).

I'd have to expand the topic question to include The Cherry Blossom Clinic, 7 Second Delay, The Evan "Funk" Davies Show, this board, and the various FOT Twitter accounts, as I don't remember the exact provenance of a lot of this stuff, but there is a lot of it.  A lot of it I already knew about or also heard about elsewhere, but the Best Show connection clinched it.

My dad was coming over to help put up drywall last weekend, and was at a yard sale with some vinyl, and picked some up for me because it was cheap.  One of the records was this: (http://www.shewan.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/07_Tales+from+Topographic+Ocean.jpg)

When he told me he was picking that up, I laughed and told him to grab it immediately.  He didn't know why I was laughing, I couldn't really explain it, but now I've got it.  Well worn double gatefold.  Probably would sound better coming out of a wristwatch with MEGABASS, but whatever.

Past present movers moments we'll process the future, but only
To touch him we know, send flowered rainbows
That chased flowers of dark and lights of songs
To you, show all we feel for and know of, cast round,
Youth is the truth accepting that reasons will relive
And breathe hope and chase and love
For you and you and you

and don't you ever forget it

This isn't a purchase (and never will be), but The Best Show is entirely responsible for my knowledge of GG Allin. I was blissfully ignorant of who he was.  After hearing about him so much on the show, curiosity got the best of me.  I really wish I could unlearn this knowledge.

Not a purchase that Best Show is entirely to thank by any means as there were so many factors, but some credit needs to be given to the Best Show for the patch.

I was wrestling with the idea of quitting in 2009, and hearing Tom talk so plaintively and reasonably about "grown-up time" (and giving Fredericks shit for smoking week after week) helped push me towards quitting. Funny how a virtual stranger can talk sense about something everyone around me had been brow-beating for years!

So, I made a new years resolution 2009/2010. After twenty-two years of heavy smoking (started when I was a young teen), I smoked my last cigarette. Went on the patch for two months, had a severe allergic reaction, went off the patch, and did the rest fists clenched.

Over 18 months later and I still haven't had even a drag. Nothing. Nada. Nyet. Hardest thing I've ever done (which is saying alot), but so worth it.

If you want a little help quitting, listen back to that stretch of shows!

So go Best Show, and go cessation!   ;)

I gave Led Zeppelin IV another chance after hearing the past couple of weeks' shows.  Upon reconsideration, it turns out that I only like three out of the eight songs ("The Battle of Evermore" - Sandy Denny vocals!! - "Misty Mountain Hop" and "When The Levee Breaks") but what three songs they are!  "Black Dog," "R&R" and "Stairway" are just too painfully reminiscent of high school.

Too bad they ripped off "When the Levee Breaks"!  I knew I'd heard that riff before - it makes me Ill to think about what Plant and Page did there.
