... I preferred their first one.
(First post!)
-
They're both fantastic.
-
This one rocks pretty hard. Plus the old one had the outdated lyric referencing the showtime.
-
you started an account to be kind of an asshole? way to go dude!
i like the new theme
-
The new one sounds more polished and more raw at the same time. I LOVE IT!
-
The new theme crushes the old theme, which was epic to begin with. I could not be more excited to benefit from the talent of Mr & Mrs Paycheck.
Tom.
-
A serious question: does the Paycheque family perform under another name? Because I want more of their music.
-
Wow ... because I have an opinion, I'm an 'asshole'?!? Nice Logic.
I was gonna start an account anyway, & since I hadn't noticed much discussion on them or the theme song(s), I figured why not chime in now.
Mr. & Mrs. Paycheck did both versions ... so no matter which you like, it's a compliment to them.
And yes, I too would like to hear more of their stuff ...
-
You need to realize the context. You fall from the sky, say something negative about the new theme song and expect everybody to welcome you with open arms. And THEN you take offense when people call you on it, stating that you merely 'have an opinion'.
Do you not know how the internet works?
Tom.
-
in the interests of extending an FOT olive branch, i want to apologize for calling you an asshole. obviously i don't speak for everyone and you're entitled to your opinions. but this is a pretty heavily biased pro best show place. we have a history of not taking kindly to that sort of best show negativity in these parts.
e.g. the FOTwa against Poster Children
-
correlation between odd ellipsis usage and being a bit rude on the internet
...
-
What I'm most offended by is the blatant misspelling of the Paycheques's family name up there at the top of this topic. Grote knows what's up.
-
BTW: No offense taken ... I didn't mean to sound negative toward the new version - It's good ... I just really liked the older version. I apologize if I got off on the wrong foot ...
I take it the "Paycheques" are Canadian then (based on the spelling)? I don't have any info on them.
PS: In all fairness, Tom also spelled their name wrong.

Both themes are great, but it is a little weird/unsettling to hear the new theme when my brain keeps expecting the old one. This must be what people went through during that final season of Archie Bunker's Place when they rerecorded the theme live at CBGB.
-
Does anyone have an answer to my question? I don't have all goddamn day, people.
-
Plus the old one had the outdated lyric referencing the showtime.
This needs fixing on the Best Show Gems podcast intro.......
Also: New theme rules.
-
When I heard it the first time, I backed it up to hear it again. Because it's that good. No slight on the old one, at all. But this isn't some New Coke or Crystal Pepsi situation, where they ruined something that was perfectly fine.
It's turned into my second favorite theme song, after SCTV. Which has been my favorite theme song since I was a child. It's hard to push out sense memories like that.
-
I thought maybe saying this would mean nothing because I usually become obsessed with EVERY theme song to the shows watch, whether they are good or bad. But I considered that I have probably heard this theme and other Best Show themes over 300 times each and continue to love it and thrill to the sound of it and what it means is coming. Talk about some strong pieces of music!
-
plus it's just new we'll al get used to it. i remember the transition being jarring when they updated the fanfare at the beginning of the show. now i can't think of it ever being different
-
I always get a little kick out of hearing "Tom Scharpling's givin' birth to smiles." It's such a goofy line, it might almost be cringeworthy from a different singer, but Mr. Paycheque sings it with such passion and conviction.
(If history is any guide, someone will now tell me that I've been mishearing the lyric for years and that's not what he says at all.)

that line is so good because its a totally obscure reference to something one the best show myspace page it's one of those esoteric best show references that excites me so much then makes me feel like a total psycho for getting it.

The new theme pulled out my still-beating heart and showed it to me.

You're not familiar with "The Cowsills"?

I always thought it was "Tom Scharpling's giving mirth a smile." I like yours better.

I always thought it was "Tom Scharpling's giving Burt's the smiles." He's making Burt Reynolds smile.

Thank you! I've been sitting here refreshing this page for the last 24 hours and it was starting to get old.

OK, OK. I lied. I had my intern doing it.

As stated above, check out the Fortunate Sons for a more of Mr.Paycheque's tuneage? And Mrs.PC has quite a few musical projects as well. I'm just so stoked I got to do backups on the new one!!

Nice work, Nick!
-
Thanks Jason...but my god did Paycheque kill it. Not to mention the rest of the band and megaproducer/megabeard Ian "Cmon" Blurton.
-
Nick, what is the beard like in person?

Today my band Stomatopod honors The Best Show on WFMU with Tom Scharpling and Jon Wurster and the Paycheques with our humble version of the Best Show Theme. Cheers FOT!

Well done, I tried to get the band I play in to record a live version. They didn't "get it".
