Title: The NHL Playoffs Thread
Post by: Louis Lame on April 14, 2011, 11:49:40 AM
Given that my dear old Toronto Maple Leafs have been denied from the postseason for the eighth(?) consecutive time I'm not really feeling any glow or anticipation. That being said, there seem to be more crap shoots than usual so I'm looking forward to great hockey.

Western Conference
Vancouver defeats Chicago; 4-1
San Jose defeats LA Kings; 4-2
Detroit defeats Phoenix; 4-2
Anaheim defeats Nashville; 4-3

Eastern Conference
Washington defeats NY Rangers; 4-2
Philadelphia defeats Buffalo; 4-3
Boston defeats Montreal; 4-2
Tampa Bay defeats Pittsburgh; 4-2

Been a Calgary fan since the 90's. Tough to see us go back to stinking. I figure it will be Anaheim or Canucks in the west, Philly and Boston coming out in the East.

The Hurricanes, in addition to their unlikely Stanley Cup in 2006, have the distinction of finishing in exactly 9th place 4 times in the past 12 years.

Part of me wants to see the Coyotes make a run but for the sake of everyone in Phoenix I hope they get swept. Imagine watching a team win knowing that they won't exist in three months.

Caps
Sabres
Canadiens
Pens

Canucks
Shorks
Wings
Preds

Do Phoenix fans actually exist? Aside from all the retired Canadian teachers that seem to migrate to Arizona anyways. But yea that would be rough, it would be awesome to see the Jets come back though. I'd root for them ahead of Vancouver. The Nordiques would quickly take up residence in my #2 spot behind Toronto if they were to ever come back. I just did a playoff draft for a pool at this diner called Cosy's this week, I picked late so not my ideal choices. Kind of glad I stayed away from the MTL/BOS series given last night.

Pavelski (SJ)
Heatley (SJ)
Vanek (BUF)
Stafford (BUF)
Gagne (TAMP)
Purcell (TAMP)
Downie (TAMP)
Moore(TAMP)
Williams (LA)
Zetterberg (DET)

I wouldn't count the Flyers out yet. They've been known to do some major comebacks. However, the lack of Pronger and failure to capitalize on Power Plays both cast large shadows over their chances.

I feel for them and can't kick them when their down. Ultimately, I'm just over the schadenfreude involved with the struggles of any non traditional franchise and will pull for any team that galls the old Canadian hockey guard. It's too bad because they are winning, but can't bank on that because there's no emotional pay off for a fan. Come get emotionally invested in our team and watch as we raise the championship banner 1400 miles away. I'd be into the Jets and Nords for nostalgia's sake though.

Expert analysis:

Letang sucks.
Gaborik sucks.
Two up on Chicago so almost time for Luongo to suck.
Boston sucks.
I didn't see the game but Selanne scored and he's the best.

This Pens-Lightning series is shaping up to be the proverbial dogfight. Can the Pens generate enough offense? Can the Pens D contain Stamkos, Lecavalier, and St. Louis? Can they turn around their anemic power play? I hope the answer to all of these questions is a resounding yes.

After watching the Blackhawks completely dismantle the Canucks in the playoffs the past two years, it is mind-blowing watching this 180 degree turn.

I've watched the Canucks blow their spots for my entire life. The idea that they might be able to actually close the deal this year is jarring to my psyche.

The debacle that is the Pens power play was to be expected but their PK is awful. Lucky for them most Lightning forwards have been no shows at even strength except for maybe St. Louis. Stamkos looks like he's out of gas but he's not the first guy to get lost in his first playoffs. That Downie hit was a crazy charge but awesome and Kunitz is dumb. Michalek is so rad.

Later Phoenix, Hawks.
Philly looks like they got this.
I could get psyched for a Ranger come back.

Yea that Downie hit was a definite charge but nothing more in my opinion. I could see a Buffalo series comeback happening and I'm super curious to see how this habs/boston series works out. I guess every year that a Canadian city hosted the Olympics (Mtl/Calgary) that same city went on to win the Stanley Cup the following year. Bodes well for Vancouver.

I'm not a hockey fan but I was reading an article somewhere... maybe ESPN the magazine about a new breed of stats that are finally taking hockey to where SABR took baseball and PER took basketball. Anyway, I mention this because while Stamkos is considering one of the best in the game, he comes up way short in whatever these new stats are, barely average if I remember right.

That pass he made to St. Louis for their first goal last night was so great. They're not ready but at the same time I don't really have any faith in Pittsburgh against a team with an actual back end. I just hope they don't play Montreal again. (Zzzzzzz)

Preds/Ducks is awesome.
Gaborik sucks but get off his back, dumb Ranger's fans. Bad bounce on a back check (probably not used to it lol.) Maybe don't blow a three goal lead.
I'd sell my soul for a Capitals or Vancouver collapse.

Time for a story.

I was in SF 6 years ago for my sister-in-law's wedding, and I tagged along for the groom's bachelor party. One of the guests from Toronto was drunk & über-obnoxious, and after awhile started needling yours truly about the town I call home. "Seriously, what's in Raleigh? Why would I ever move there? Why would anyone ever move there?"

Do you know how good it felt just a few short months later to send him a picture of Hurricanes captain Rod Brind'Amour holding the Stanley Cup?

Both of these goalies were incredible. One of the best series I have seen in a while.

the hawks-canucks series was, imo, the standout series so far, but it's been a great playoffs overall.  i'm looking forward to both the western quarters; i have a feeling the preds will surprise some people and take the canucks in 6.  the wings-sharks series doesn't excite me as much (although i'm a detroit fan since i grew up there); i'm thinking the sharks will take it in 5.  i just don't have much faith in the aging wings team, even with their sweep over the coyotes.

oh, and i'd love to see tampa bay win tonight.

Last night's game was one for the ages. It had the same energy around it as last year's Olympic gold medal game...honestly, that was the feeling out here.

Hats off to Corey Crawford for one of the best displays of goaltending I've ever seen.

Bring on the Preds. With how hot they've been running, I've gotta feeling its going to be another great series.

Congrats to 75% of the Eastern Conference for being choke artists and, more importantly, ruing my picks.

Finally an end to the torturous TB-PIT series. Yuck. Junk players up front and junk coaching finally caught up with Pittsburgh. Next round will be fun if Tampa can skate with Washington.

Sucks that Montreal lost because PK Subban rules.

Round Two
Flyers
Capitals (Really hope Tampa can pull this one out.)
Canucks (Go Preds.)
Sharks

i only saw the last 30-45 (real time) minutes of the game today, but from what i saw, detroit looked awful.  at least they had a chance in OT in game 1 (which actually wasn't a terrible display by the wings like today's trainwreck).

i still have hope for the preds and am still predicting a 6 game victory for them over the canucks.  they needed last night's win to be in it, for sure, but the preds looked surprisingly good in OT for being in vancouver.  i hope loungo is, much like in the quarters, somewhat mentally shaken up for the next two games in nashville.

i didn't follow the lighting at all in the regular season but they looked great in game one and seem to be holding their own 2 periods in tonight (1 all at intermission).  it seems like a few people are saying they're the sleeper hit of the east; if they can take down washington i'd be giddy.  GIDDY I TELL YA.

My prediction of the Sharks in 5 is, gladly, not coming true.  I've been impressed with the Wings the last two games, especially Game 6.  Really looking forward to Game 7 tonight.  My gut still says Sharks win, but I'd love to see the Wings pull it off.

You've probably seen this, but here's the Finals schedule with both scenarios.  Is it weird there's no 7.30 ET starts?  Or have they always started as late as 8p ET in the Finals?

I can definitely sympathize with all the criticisms of the Canucks, but as a lifelong resident of Vancouver, who watched the team lose a classic and heartbreaker in 1994 during my formative years, I'm definitely pulling for them this time around.

It's nothing personal and honestly I don't think I see enough of the Canucks during the season to really have any emotion about them.  It's just hard to get behind a President's Trophy winning juggernaut. Best of luck to Vancouverites, though. We can always bond over our mutual hatred for Mark Messier.

My only hope is that the spectre of the '94 playoff run resonates enough, and that people learned from the Olympics enough not to destroy the city this time around; hopefully, the police will ease up on the rubber bullets as well.

Good to see another borderline NHL player getting the book thrown at him. Another coup for the NHL Disciplinary Committee.  Fortunately for the Canucks they not only don't have to see Horton anymore but they don't have to play Rome either.

Very confident to hear a game seven guarantee from the MVP candidate who got punched seven times by a rookie in a blowout game, didn't fight back and got a misconduct anyway after begging for a call. Both of these teams are so awful that it's almost endearing but Vancouver is on another level. I'm still laughing about Luongo being bummed about "pumping [Thomas'] tires."

Feels bad man but I'm so behind the Bruins right now. I could watch Thomas chop down Burrows all day.

I've greatly enjoyed these playoffs but find myself a bit fatigued and, in particular, unable to really care who wins.  Vancouver seems like a neat city, has never won the Cup and Canada hasn't won for a long time.  Boston is an Original Six franchise and hasn't won for a very long time.  I don't love or hate anyone on either team.

I've been halfheartedly cheering for Vancouver, I guess.  Ryan Kesler seemed so unstoppable and skilled against Nashville and sometimes against San Jose, but it's hard to imagine a star player having a less consequential Finals appearance.

I'm completely with you on this.  I've been pulling for Vancouver, too, but Boston's been playing great since Game 3.  And I guess I'd rather see a Canadian team win, esp. with the Winnipeg franchise coming back in the 11-12 season (I realize these things have little in common, but I like seeing Canada get their due.).  Anyway, I'll watch tonight, but I won't be heartbroken to see it end.

What a fucking dumpster fire.

I'm going to quote a friend of mine's facebook status, because I couldn't agree more:
Quote
can't wait for sports articles trying to explain the built up tension of sports fans and the need for release much like in '94. What they'll leave out is the Guns N' Roses Riot, Olympic Riot, and others going back decades. Vancouver just has a high ratio of morons per capita. They always have.

There's that ongoing joke on the Best Show about bad Canadians. Most of them are the young dudes who live in the lower mainland of Greater Vancouver.

Just the worst. THE worst. And I'm mad at myself for the hours of live coverage I watched late into the night last night. Thankfully, all those cell phone videos will come in handy when these animals are rounded up and sent to a Russian gulag.
