Title: My Biggest Best Show Laugh so Far This Year
Post by: buffcoat on August 08, 2011, 05:05:55 PM
Tom is telling the story of the kid in the club in Portland.  The bouncer tells him he can't get leave and get back in.

The kid says:

"That's ok, cause this place sucks, and YOU suck."

The whole Japanese restaurant turned to stare at me.

This happens to me too. I'll be listening on my phone, and walking down the street alone laughing intermittently. People will stare and think there's something wrong with me.

Me too.  I like to listen at the gym, so my random smiles and laughs always get weird looks.

Oh man.  Several years back, I had an experience walking out of a subway station.

Tom was pondering why, with all of our amazing modern technologies, we can't slow down those old-time movies so that baseball players might appear to be running at a normal speed.

I started laughing so hard, I had to step against the wall to let the flux of humanity by me as they rushed to climb the stairs. I was up against the hallway wall, laughing so hard no noise was coming out of me...just a ridiculously large exhale. It hurt!

I lost it at work when Tom was doing his "Glutton" poems a few shows ago. I had to put my head on my desk.

Also, I can't remember if it was this year, but the guy's story about the Amtrak dining-car waiter/bartender (?) saying "Meow meow goes the kitty" when someone tipped him got me but good.

My too obvious answer is the entire Gathering Of The Juggalos segment w/ PFT, which had me wheezing in my cube at my former job.

Another one that comes to mind was from the epic Bruce Springsteen biographer call from late last year.  As I walked down the street, I listened to the real story behind Darkness On The Edge Of Town, bursting into laughter on a crowded street corner when I learned that the main characters, Rip and Mary, didn't have the means to start a family b/c Rip was "born without nards."  It came out of nowhere, and Tom's attempts to quickly move the call forward just made me lose it.

Of course, my laughter was amplified 1,000 times later in my walk when the biographer sang the original lyrics to "Racing in the Street".  What made me double my pace so I wouldn't have to be around one single group of pedestrians too long was the gem of a lyric, "I got those at the Car Quest also downtown...because they were on sale there."

Later, a friend sent me a link to a Bruce message board and a post dedicated to this particular call.

I think Tom was telling  caller about Hider in the House. And caller said "Nooo waaayyyyy!" in this whispering/excited tone.  Tom hung up in disgust and kept repeating "Nooo waayyyyy." I'm pretty sure it was that. I couldn't stop laughing.

Biggest for me was the Return of The Jedi 'Shuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuutttttt Uuuuuuuuup!' bit. The build up was amazing. I was driving, and I swerved from laughing.

I had to get off of an elliptical machine during the Gathering of the Juggalos bit, but I was alone. My potentially-embarrassing public laff was on NJ Transit a few years ago, when Tom told a caller he should end a breakup with his girlfriend by walking backwards and singing "wah wah wah wah wahhhh."

My nearly drove off a cliff moment:

"Show some respect!"

Tom: "why?"

"I'm Egyptian!"

and also "you Egypt-a-dip!"

I had to pause the old ipod, that dude was too much.  Thank goodness I wasn't driving while listening to any of the "magic" todd manheim stuff, I might not have been so lucky to reach the pause button in time  :P.

I'll have to go back to get the actual wording, but there's a part in the first half of the Magic call that becomes twice as funny after the reveal at the end. Tom's pressing him to admit that his powers are all a sham, and he gives this kind of impish "I dunno, they could be real?" response in a way that gets to the heart of what I love about so many of the Newbridge callers.

I was on a run during "Jazz Fart" and had to stop on the side of the road.  People passing by thought I was insane.

it was actually in Oct 2010, but when Captain Elitist calls in and says he's above Jackass 3 and Tom takes him to town. I've played that for many people and i laugh every time.

jason's monkey in a diaper story is phenomenal.

the portland kid story is very funny as well.

When Tom says he's Christ-like and says "put me in the tomb and i'll roll that boulder out everytime!"

Mentioned it elsewhere, but the notion of Tom making an old man crumble his contraband cookies inside his wife's purse made me laugh harder than I can remember in a long time.

Sorry if I'm breaking the rulez of this thread, not quite from this year but Zachary Brimstead and his "3 octave" WWWWwwhhAAATTtt!s are killing me.

Also going back to the egyptian caller, anytime he mentioned "sliding his ass out of there" and Toms "ugghh"  ;D

and tom on the creepy byrds song about the horse was hilarious, that may be my favorite non newbridge related moment of the year

In a recent bit Jon's character insisted that Mickey Dolenz played drums and sang on Pleasant Valley Sunday.

I'd like to second, Mistaaaahhh Moooonlighhight at Beatle Fest.  I was sitting in traffic laughing and crying like a maniac at the perfect description of the funniest and saddest thing Tom ever witnessed.

Runner up goes to the latest Gene Simmons call where Gene refers to the Gene, Paul, Tommy, and Eric line up as the classic KISS lineup.

Yeh but the caller insisted he drummed while singing. Tom  plays the song and there is really fast drumming with him singing over it and Tom calls shenanigans.

Tom quitting at the close of last night's show after the second Orson Welles/Colonel Kurtz suggestion had me in stitches. It was the way he kept his cool whilst running through the litany of horrors he's endured.

Darren from work called in the guise of the Ploptron 5000. I believe he uttered "WHAT IT IS DOUCHE." I laughed very, very hard.

Which show is this? I think about this call way too often and am always to lazy to look for it.

The one that's been killing me lately has been tom taking mike to task on Mike's favorite Led Zeppelin albums.

"Led Zeppelin Four? You sure you wanna go out on a limb like that?"

and let's not forget The Buffet Manager.

Milo was calling for quite a few shows in a row, and on one of his last calls, Zach G. was in the studio ripping on him the entire call. I believe Milo also called when Hodgman was in the studio and they discussed D&D, which had me almost wrecking the car.

Milo was one of my favorite callers for a while, although I know he annoyed some folks.

So much of the stuff with his dad (which led to his not calling the show anymore) was off-show, off-messageboard that I never did get a clear picture of what happened.  But I, too, enjoyed his calls and the interplay with Tom.  Hell, I liked Mac's calls and the less-weird Petey calls.

Unless Milo has called in to talk about D&D more than once, that was PFT in the studio. From the 6/15/10 show, my favorite Best Show episode ever.

That is a particularly good one!  However... ah, this needs a new thread.
