Title: The "I'm Having a Horrible Day at Work" thread
Post by: Susannah on June 04, 2007, 03:51:40 PM
Anyone else?

I’m leaving my current job (glorified office work) on Friday. I’ve been working here for a year—my first job out of college—and have been plotting my escape since last November. I’m excited for my new job starting in August and the cross-country move that it will require, but this last week is proving to be SO MISERABLE. My bosses keep giving me new projects that “have” to get done and are angry that I’m accepting new assignments with less than a grin, in addition to tying up any and all loose ends before I go.

The irony is, for the majority of my time here, there simply wasn’t enough work for me to do, and I would amuse myself by staring blankly at an Excel document and listening to “Best Show” archives.

Sorry, I don’t mean to sound like a spoiled brat, but I feel totally overwhelmed by all of this and will feel incredibly guilty if I don’t get it all done.  I’ve been coming in early, staying late and skipping lunch breaks, but it’s just not enough time.  I feel like the world’s worst employee!

Oh you think you've got it bad!
I lost track of time and just missed Judge Judy.

this has been a brutal day out here on the jobsite as well.  I got about $500,000 worth of change orders (in 4 documents) in the last week and trying to keep everything straight is maddening.

I have had the usual run of folsk who are being sued or evicted. No death threats today, realatively quiet.

My last day of this is June 15th, I can hardly wait.

Susannah, don't let them bully you.  For whatever reason (are they really mad you're leaving?), your bosses are deliberately being pricks.  And if there was ever a time when there's no need to stand for it, this is it.  You're leaving, so you really can more or less tell them to go to hell.  Don't let your natural inclination to do a good job make it easier for them to screw you.

I'm so sorry that so many other FOTs had bad days at work too...we shouldn't stand for it!

I hope tomorrow is a better day for everyone.

Number one rule of any job: Never skip lunch.  If your job lets you skip lunch, makes you skip lunch, or makes you feel like you should skip lunch, they are a bunch of jerks and you should quit.  Which means you're doing the right thing by leaving they're fascist asses!

my job is actually incredibly relaxed and casual, it was just a pain to lose my metro card.

I worked nine hours today AND skipped lunch.
not that this is something to be bragged about, but at least one day a week I end up working double that many hours in a day and I can't remember the last time I worked less than 10 on a weekday.

edit: excluding days with company meetings or golf tournaments

Maybe I'm just a slacker.
or your parents loved you enough and instilled you with an adequate sense of self-worth.

I suppose it matters if you are invested in your work. I've had weeks where I average 14 hours a day of work, but I feel like I'm learning, and accomplishing something. I've also had weeks where I barely work 40 hours a week, and feel like I'm still wasting my time.

Although, Susannah, I do feel like your "bosses" are taking advantage of the fact that you're quiting, and know your work ethic, and are making you pay for not being able to tell them to go screw themselves. At least it can only last through the week though, right?

I think the only thing you should worry about is, would these people give you a good reference, or intentionally give you a bad reference, out of spite?

yeah, don't get me wrong, I choose to work as much as I do.  I could work 50% as much and get 75% the results, but my ego won't let me.

plus, when you're working, there's no time for worrying.

Poor Toy Boy.  He looks like Six Pack and Stallion have been smacking him around a bit.  Hopefully it was consensual.

Cheer up, Susannah!
Soon you'll be in LA doing that other job (one that, from how you've described it, will be sure to yield plenty of "Argh" stories that you probably won't be able to share with us.)
You will, however, be able to go to the UCB-LA (http://www.ucbtheatre.com/la/) as often as you want, and that's awesome.

I work as a barback at a bar a friend of the family owns. Last night the owner fed me, twice. And we watched movies and talked about books. It's a great job.

Also, I get paid. That always makes my day good.

You guys are so lucky to be able to listen to Best Show/music at work.  My disposition would be so much better and day would go much quicker if I could do that! Ohhh cubes...
Susannah-do you mind me asking what type of job you have/will have? I recall you saying you were an English major (me too-also currently in first job out of college).  Just wondering what other career paths the major lends itself to.
