We got some of the greats last night but many of the Best Show caller pantheon were missing, who do you hope to hear from soon on the new Best Show.
my wishlist is:
Laurie from Miami
Dave from Knoxville
Fredricks
and Petey
-
Spike
Clark
James for Southeast PA (aka James from the Bathroom)
Laser Factory/Tremarch Guy
-
Spike

James for Southeast PA (aka James from the Bathroom)
Laser Factory/Tremarch Guy
One of the callers last night faked me out for a second and I thought it was James from the Bathroom
-
gotta add
Andy Kindler
Julie from Cinci
Stevie Blue
For some reason I fully expected Hot Rockin' Ronny to swoop in and try to sabotage that first episode.
-

Yes! That got me, too.
-
Pastor Josh
-
Yeah, whatever happened to Pastor Josh?
-
Stevie 'It's a Love Thing' Blue.
-
I really enjoy the train wrecks, so definitely Michael K and 12-year-old Canadian Glenn Beck. I would also say Zach from Richmond, but he might have actually called (Tom hung up on that guy named Zach because he "didn't like his energy").
-
What was the guys name that was real mannered, almost talked like a robot and would get in his car and close all the windows when he called?
-
Edgar
-

The Mit Hamine guy?
Ugh. I truly hope we never hear from him again on The Best Show.
-
Yeah, I guess I just want to hear him get Bad Company'd.
-
in order...
Fredricks
Spike
August
Milo
Petey

Co-signed. I've hated no one more in the history of the show more than Zach

Fredricks
Spike
August
Milo
Petey
August and Milo are old news. They had their moments, but have nothing left to offer.

That's Omar, tough but fair.

Am I the only one fervently hoping that Spike and Michael K. do not join the party for the new show? I've never heard a Michael K. call that didn't make me wish I was dead, and Spike peaked with Weirdos Exposed. He's been playing proverbial county fairs ever since.
-

I'm fine with them because Tom can completely handle them and spin their straw into gold. They're not nasty and disruptive like Z*ch from that dumb band and the guy who used to call up drunk.
I find Michael K charming in an odd way, not sure why. And I enjoy what Tom does with Spike's calls.
-
Looking forward to Samir from Florida checking in!
-
Laurie from Miami for sure.
Spike (I thought I would never write that, but...I miss the guy)
Dave from Knoxville
That woman who called in the last few shows of the WFMU show who Tom begged to call again (anyone know who I'm talking about?), I forget her name. She had a good, weird energy
Julie from Cincinnati
Larry da Perv needs a better phone dere.
Jamesjamesjamesjames haahahahaaha yougotJamesedjamesjames. I hope he never redeems himself and becomes human.
The guy from Tasmania, I'm forgetting his name...
NEVER want to hear from Zilch antihistamine. NEVER. But if he does, Tom will handle him.
-
Who was the guy from Las Vegas that would call in and talk to Tom about rap music?
-

You’re not*, but I hope both call. I’m a longtime Spike enthusiast, but I can understand that some would experience some degree of Spike fatigue as the quality of his work did indeed vary quite wildly. In his defense, I imagine that anyone who called a radio show 25+ times a year for nearly 10 years would have some subpar stretches.
As for MK, I would welcome about five doses per year. I find his accent and phrasing to be amusing, and a review of his Best Show work will reveal that he knows his stuff – he frequently mentions things from the show that indicates he’s a careful listener (even if his listening skills while on the phone are often lacking).
*It is a bit hard to believe that people really want Spike to never call again.
-
It was nice to hear from Julie. I'm hoping for Dave from Monster Magnet now that there are no FCC restrictions. and of course, Fredericks. he really is my favorite caller of all time. he's the type of dude with whom i'd like to share a brewski.
but if we're talking about a 'wishlist' i'm gonna dream a little. i would looooove andrew dice clay to call up. also triumph the insult comic dog. he has a new show coming out on adult swim so maybe he'll call to promote it. *fingers crossed* anyone know how to get in touch with him and make that happen. does wally have any connections being a puppet and all?

Spike's triumphant return followed by a ban for big-timing Tom last year.
I love Michael K.
JelloMan response call to KV.
All 3 Southern Gentlemen. Back to back, equal time.
And, KINDL-AAAAAHHHH!!
-
It might be silly but. Every time Tom tells his story about Las Vegas and the elevator. The first time I heard it I thought it was funny. But somehow it gets funnier every time I hear it.
-
Caller-ID will make problem callers a thing of the past on the new Best Show.
Michael K. is one of my favorite callers no matter what you say. And his call that got Tom talking about the Andy Warhol exhibit at the Pittsburgh Museum is an all-time classic.
-
What if someone, ah, liked the problem callers? Asking for a friend.
-
Paycheck.
Also, still waiting for Joey Levels to call back in.
-
I like Michael K calls for what they are: a canvas, on which Tom can paint. An impossibly huge canvas that seems to stretch out forever and maybe there isn't enough paint in the whole world to fill it, maybe there hasn't ever been enough paint to fill it, on which Tom can paint.
There are a handful of regular callers with "gimmicks" who can make it work, and he's one of them. I think the worst thing most people can do is call in with a bit in mind, because it betrays the fact that you probably don't "get" the Show as well as you think and really know where the callers best fit in, but I firmly put Spike and Michael K in the camp of those who pull it off and Tom obviously knows their rhythms and when to dump them. As others have said, he clearly listens to the Show, is a fan and knows what role he's playing (sign of a good bad caller: someone who either knows enough to keep talking when Tom is giving them rope or is delusional enough to keep calling when Tom is giving them rope). It's fun, the right doses, to get mad about Michael K calls, is how I'd put it.
For almost everybody else, the ground rules should be to either call in on a topic or call in with a story/thing to ask Tom about and then pay attention enough to follow Tom's lead and/or get out of the way when it goes somewhere.
I would have bet that Joey Levels would never return if you asked me last week, but then Mr. T Guy magically appeared, so anything is possible.
-
What if someone, ah, liked the problem callers? Asking for a friend.
E.g- The calls from the drunk guy who received the Death Wish from Tom. He always switched from hostility to indignant defensiveness in the most annoying way possible. In super small doses, it's entertaining. More than a couple of calls like that, and it's dangerous "Pangea" territory.
-

Did Spike try to call in the other night?
-
I went back and listened to the Felt-down recently. Wally's call was what it was, but Gregg's call is a classic in my book. I'm not saying that Dark Greggulator should be a weekly or even monthly occurrence, but I thoroughly enjoyed all of Dark Greggulator calls.
Maggie Serota always had great calls. On topic and funny.
I've always found Tom & Terre T's calls very charming and weird.
So that's my top 3
1. Dark Greggulator
2. Maggie from Brooklyn
3. DJ Terre T
-
Who was the guy from Las Vegas that would call in and talk to Tom about rap music?
I would love that too. Can't remember his name, but he was making music too right?
If he's lurking here, time for an update dude. Throw down some bed music for Tom. Aside from The Theme Weavers, the GFK beat was my favorite non-original bed music.

I think you're right, he may have made his own music.
-
YOU'RE LOSING THE VOICE!
-
Listening again to one of the Tom and Marc shows, which are so good. Would be great to have Maron co-host a future show
-
oh man Joey Levels would be great. i remember tom cracking up after that call... those are some of the finest moments, when tom cracks up on air.
i dont know if we will ever hear from spike again. not that i dont want him to call, i just wonder if he ever will.
im sure we will be hearing the new from New Port Richy soon enough.
i would like to know whats going on in Ploptrons life
-
Does anybody know what happened to Wally Wackiman? (I've been listening to the show for years but just recently started using the forum) It seemed like there was quite a bit of controversy surrounding him and then he just stopped calling in. Was there maybe an off-radio ban?
-
He never recovered from his "feltdown"....
-
Am I the only one who spends way too much time wondering what happened to people who no longer call in? It just seems really weird to me that there are callers who were major parts of the show that just suddenly stopped calling completely.
-
I want to read Lisa Jane Persky's memoir...I wonder if she's related to adman/TV and movie producer/Warhol associate Lester Persky
-
Laurie from Miami
Fredericks from New Port Richie
Larry Da Perv
Sarah from Chicago
Officer Tom
Geneva
-
Larry already called in.
I bet you'll get two or three of the remaining ones. I think L from M is done calling. I don't know about Sara(h) from Chi.
My guess is that F-reddy-ricks will dial that phone that he's picking up soon, and that Officer Tom will check in. Maybe Geneva, too.
-
I am having some difficulty find the dial.
-
I'd also love to hear from Bonnie from Georgia again.
-

Read my mind. I am in touch with her, will share your sentiment.
-
I am having some difficulty find the dial.
fonpr, I invoked your name today on Twitter. Also, the Prez is coming to my campus Friday, but I will try not to mention that I know you.
-
He never recovered from his "feltdown"....
What date is the "Feltdown" show? I missed quite a few shows at that point, and then the "caller ban" went into effect not long after, and I was all discombobulated. I never had a chance to go back and listen until now.
-
The caller ban was before, wasn't it? Greggulator called in the week before and was put on warning, that's when he called out Wally. Then when Wally called in, Tom mentioned the ban a few times.
-

October 4, 2011: Trip Whiting has sizable news on Time Trampoline! Michael K takes the scenic route! The trouble with Fribbles! Larry Da Perv says the coolest thing Tom has ever heard anyone say! And the much-discussed Feltdown! Don’t miss!
-
Jimmy Page.

I just got to the feltdown in my listen to TBS from the beginning, what a thing of beauty

Thank you! Caller ban was indeed earlier. Found that one too:
August 9, 2011: VANESSA BAYER is in-studio, discussing her trailblazing dad, Offspring parodies and the poor dietary habits of SNL staff! All the regular callers get banned! And Brent Prefontaine – Bryce’s brother – offers to be the show’s Cannabis Correspondent!
Getting ready for some mid-day Best Show listening at work!
-
My biggest wish for show callers is that Tom gets a streak of great ones tonight. Whether it be the return of the Greggulator, some good ol fashion Jason southern charm, or one of his friends calling in. The callers shouldn't be complete twats tonight.
-
C'mon Fredericks! Would you call tonight?
-
I'll try my best, Epic.
-
Fredericks, Spike, Julie, Laurie.... Come on back!
-
Exactly. Tom's tweet from Starbucks last night was so sad...you famous callers from days of yore need to start calling tout de suite, it's your obligation for Tom making you stars!
-
Does anyone know who played Woodsy, the Utica rapper who loved Ditello's Subs, in that one call from 2002? He sounded a bit like JW, but couldn't be because there was a point when they were both on the line speaking to each other.
-
We don't know his name, but Jon Wurster has said that he's a friend of his.
The same guy calls as C.C. Tennessee in the Patriot Zone (also from Utica) and one other time as someone else. I think I mentioned it elsewhere on the board.
Also this: https://soundcloud.com/woodsy-ditello (https://soundcloud.com/woodsy-ditello)

Interesting. Thank you.
I assumed it was JW and was genuinely surprised when Jon called in to talk about 'Woodsymania'.
-
This upstate NY chain also seems to be the model for Ditello's:

I would love to see all the various regulars from years past show up on the new show--would be great to bring in new listeners. Where are Hodgman, Oswalt, Klausner, Maron, etc...there are a lot of them!

Wyndorf & Fraction.
-
Andrew Kindler.
-
2003 era Andrew Earles
-
I keep seeing refs in people's twitter feeds about how now is the time to start to get the word out about the show. I'm in a bad mood so I'll say it...where are all the big names to help Tom out? Every week there should be one of these big names like Marc Maron (I guess he's shooting his series or whatever)...they were all more than happy to get free pub on the old show, time for them to help the f--k out now!
-
Maron gave a plug for The Best Show on his Monday episode with Cameron Esposito.
-
I REALLY want Fraction to call in. Has Kelly Sue ever? I feel like she would kill it. As for regulars, Laurie and Julie, obviously, Julie Klausner, Dave from Knoxville, Fred from Honolulu just off the top of my head. I already got Jelloman and Kurt Vile. Also, the more I watch NXT, the more I was Aiden English to call in.
-
Paul F Tompkins! I still don't get why he just fell off the face of the earth when he used to call in semi-regularly for a year or two there. Also, Steinberg.
-
Today's winner for awkward question is....
-
Flat1ander!
-
No wishlist. I personally don't want the Best Show to just be non-stop rumination. And there have been a LOT of great callers in the past -- and if they want to call, great! But an important part of Best Show history is all the waves of specific callers that have come and gone, stressing the latter word.
-
Has John from Maplewood called in yet?
-
I just finished the episode. I feel like a chump now, but I'm glad Fred is back!
-
I'm a big fan of the H-Man, Wally, Julie from C, and Laurie. Not the most original choices, but I have listened to the 2010 episodes so much i feel like theyre part of my internal monologue.
-
I just finished the episode. I feel like a chump now, but I'm glad Fred is back!
You mean Fredericks? He's the best
-
Fred from Wehakin'?
-
Fred from Honolulu! But those are all great Freds too.
-
Oh yeah! A fraternity of great Freds
-
I always liked Fred from Queens, despite Tom's obvious displeasure during his calls. I think he may have been someone doing a character tho, as there were a couple of other similar voiced calls when Fred was apparently visiting his mother (in a country which i can't remember).

She lives in Israel. As in, "How was Israel? Israel was hot, man."
There were a number of similarly voiced but less "hey, man" calls that weren't from the Fred from Queens character.
I also thought he was a positive addition to the show.

Fredternity

I just finished Howard the Duck #1 and I really started to think about how amazing a Chip Zdarsky call would be.
-
Teddy Rockstar!!!

So did something go down between PFT and tom that I'm not aware of then? Someone fill me in here!

you're about 4 years late to the party, it's a topic thats been put to bed a long time ago and its not something that's discussed here. google it if you have to.

I am looking forward to the following friends of the Show to return (in no particular order): Julie Klausner, Ted Leo, John Hodgman, Jen Kirkman, and Andy Kindler.
And I know she called in on Tuesday, but Julie from Cincinnati should call more often.
I don't think she's been a guest before, but I know she took part in one of the Bell House live shows, I'd love for Kim Gordon to call.
And, I'm not sure why, but I wish Tom wouldn't hang up on Larry D. Pervison so quickly. (I'm not saying he doesn't deserve it, but I find him oddly endearing.)
-
Oh, I almost forgot--I hope Jake Fogelnest (pronounced "Foogalnest") calls in soon.
-
I don't call in regularly for two reasons.
1) I sometimes can't listen live on Tuesday's. I've got things going on, etc. Or, if I am listening live, my wife's asleep (she gets up super early for work) and I don't want to wake her up.
2) Less is more. I was calling in too much during the protege battle. In fact, I never called in until Tom for whatever reason floated my name on the air as a protege replacement. It took me a while to find out exactly how to be a quality caller. The trick for me is less-is-more. I only call in when I have something I want to bring up and/or I'm listening and something fits the topic.
The Dark Greggulator call was an absolute blast. I flamed out a lot in previous calls. Or maybe I didn't flame out a lot, as much as people got sick of me and the things I said that were okay didn't click because people didn't like what I was selling. So I used the old wrestling adage -- If they hate you, give them a reason to hate you. I wanted to use the protege battle to get some heat by attacking a few other protege candidates/banned callers.
It was all in good fun, but I know people don't come from the same vantage point as me. I met Geneva a few weeks before that call and really hit it off well with her. She's such a great, sweet person. I really didn't want her to take offense as to what I was doing. But she was sort of the perfect target exactly because of that, and I ran with it. I couldn't let Geneva in on what I was up to ahead of time or else the whole thing wouldn't have worked. It needs that "kayfabe" -- when people think what they see is real when it's not, in wrestling parlance -- to really sell itself.
Wally took the bait the next week and gave us all a psychodrama to remember.
I obviously buried the hatchet with those guys. None of it was personal at all. It was all in good fun.
But less-is-more with that stuff. I only called five or six times after the heel turn, I think. (And made an in-studio appearance with my brother.) And only a few of those calls were me being a heel. The one was Mit Hamine. I'd like to think that I may have helped break up that awful band.
Being a heel is fun but you can only do it in limited doses. Plus, a lot of FOTs have met me and/or know me in some fashion and, I hope, realize I'm not this jerk who goes around belittling people. Now I only call in if I have something I really want to talk about that I think is a good subject, ala the sensory deprivation tank, which has some legs to it. (Although I couldn't resist the nuclear option deal.)
And I love how Tom has cast me as this sorta insane weirdo, too. It's pretty true, but all in good fun.
I really hate it when people take getting GOMP'd seriously. It still happens. There's radio Tom and actual Tom. Most people get and understand that but not everyone does.

Were you the one that picked Gran Ma Ma? Loved it.
