I like Michael K calls for what they are: a canvas, on which Tom can paint. An impossibly huge canvas that seems to stretch out forever and maybe there isn't enough paint in the whole world to fill it, maybe there hasn't ever been enough paint to fill it, on which Tom can paint.

There are a handful of regular callers with "gimmicks" who can make it work, and he's one of them. I think the worst thing most people can do is call in with a bit in mind, because it betrays the fact that you probably don't "get" the Show as well as you think and really know where the callers best fit in, but I firmly put Spike and Michael K in the camp of those who pull it off and Tom obviously knows their rhythms and when to dump them. As others have said, he clearly listens to the Show, is a fan and knows what role he's playing (sign of a good bad caller: someone who either knows enough to keep talking when Tom is giving them rope or is delusional enough to keep calling when Tom is giving them rope). It's fun, the right doses, to get mad about Michael K calls, is how I'd put it.

For almost everybody else, the ground rules should be to either call in on a topic or call in with a story/thing to ask Tom about and then pay attention enough to follow Tom's lead and/or get out of the way when it goes somewhere.

I would have bet that Joey Levels would never return if you asked me last week, but then Mr. T Guy magically appeared, so anything is possible.
This may be the year I will disappear.

What if someone, ah, liked the problem callers? Asking for a friend.

E.g- The calls from the drunk guy who received the Death Wish from Tom.  He always switched from hostility to indignant defensiveness in the most annoying way possible.  In super small doses, it's entertaining. More than a couple of calls like that, and it's dangerous "Pangea" territory.

Caller-ID will make problem callers a thing of the past on the new Best Show.

Michael K. is one of my favorite callers no matter what you say. And his call that got Tom talking about the Andy Warhol exhibit at the Pittsburgh Museum is an all-time classic.

Did Spike try to call in the other night?

I went back and listened to the Felt-down recently.  Wally's call was what it was, but Gregg's call is a classic in my book.  I'm not saying that Dark Greggulator should be a weekly or even monthly occurrence, but I thoroughly enjoyed all of Dark Greggulator calls.

Maggie Serota always had great calls.  On topic and funny.

I've always found Tom & Terre T's calls very charming and weird.

So that's my top 3

1. Dark Greggulator
2. Maggie from Brooklyn
3. DJ Terre T

Who was the guy from Las Vegas that would call in and talk to Tom about rap music?

I would love that too.  Can't remember his name, but he was making music too right?

If he's lurking here, time for an update dude.  Throw down some bed music for Tom.  Aside from The Theme Weavers, the GFK beat was my favorite non-original bed music.

I think you're right, he may have made his own music.

Listening again to one of the Tom and Marc shows, which are so good. Would be great to have Maron co-host a future show

Does anybody know what happened to  Wally Wackiman? (I've been listening to the show for years but just recently started using the forum) It seemed like there was quite a bit of controversy surrounding him and then he just stopped calling in. Was there maybe an off-radio ban?

Am I the only one who spends way too much time wondering what happened to people who no longer call in? It just seems really weird to me that there are callers who were major parts of the show that just suddenly stopped calling completely.

I want to read Lisa Jane Persky's memoir...I wonder if she's related to adman/TV and movie producer/Warhol associate Lester Persky

Larry already called in.

I bet you'll get two or three of the remaining ones. I think L from M is done calling. I don't know about Sara(h) from Chi.

My guess is that F-reddy-ricks will dial that phone that he's picking up soon, and that Officer Tom will check in. Maybe Geneva, too.
