Hot, hot stuff.
Just as poppy as I was hoping for, but more mellow than expected. "Screaming Hand" kind of reminds me of Sparks. I love it.

This 7" is so fucking great. It took me forever to import it into itunes and put it on my ipod, but since I did I listen to it nonstop.

Try the Goner site, Forrest. A buddy of mine has gotten his copies of the first 2 from them, so I know they stock them.
I heard this one sold out on Matador's site in 2 hours. And these are supposed to be getting more and more limited with each single. I guess they're going to press 11 of the last one.

It figures- the one day I don't go on the internet at all because I'm away visiting my injured grandmother, of all things, the preorder goes up. Though it sounds like I wouldn't have been able to get one anyway- not only did it sell out nearly immediately, they actually had to email a number of people who had been able to order one and tell them they didn't actually get one.
This one looked particularly cool, too- oh well. It's just odd because the first two were so easy to find everywhere.

Apparently the last couple of 7"s will not even be available for mailorder (i.e. they will be offered by e-mail to those that purchased the earlier 7"s or they will only be in record stores).

Hmmm...I hope this means I'll be able to get one since I've bought the others. Ugh...part of me is annoyed by this sort of behavior (intentionally pressing a far smaller quantity than you know you can sell - I'm looking at you, Boris!), which encourages collector fetishism...and another part of me is in the thrall of that same fetishism. I need them all! Yeah, I know I can get all the songs on the compilation that Matador will sell when this craziness is over, but I still need them all.

i havent even tried to buy any of these releases- i knew then and i know now that i wouldnt grab one in time. i decided a long time ago to cut my losses when i could. it would only bring major disappointment.

Actually N.O. ...you called it. I am anti-ebay, so I haven't even come within 1,000 clicks of it.
And I'm not picky about the pressing. I listen to vinyl almost exclusively when I'm not in the car so I'm not into bragging rights (which, for the record, are deserved when you've got a record worth bragging about)...but ill check out ebay.

I have a very love/hate relationship (sorry for the cliche) with vinyl collecting. I find myself getting completely infuriated with people who, say, claim to have 50 records and it turns out to be every variation of the same three Bomb the Music Industry! albums, or labels that intentionally press ridiculously small amounts (Matador might be excepted in this case, since they are eventually releasing a collection of all the singles so at least they'll be in print), but I am kind of mad that I still don't have the first Epoxies single and every so often I go on a pop-punk 7" binge.

I am usually fine with just having a virtual copy of music. In fact, I sold all of my CDs (about 5,000) (except for my anally complete Aphex Twin collection) four years ago and I haven't regretted it at all. I have a small handful of vinyl I keep because it's neat, but I'm far from a collector.
Until now: I have decided that I want a copy of the original Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields 45", because it's in the running in my book for being the best single ever. The only one on ebay looks to be in only so-so condition for about $100. Is that around normal? It seems high.

I actually got a shipping confirmation from Insound- I saw a number of people say theirs was canceled too. I guess I did have some luck after all.
There were 2000? I have a lot of records from relatively popular bands pressed in way smaller numbers than that and it's never been this crazy to get one when it's first released. I'm definitely not in for the rest of them, assuming it will only get worse.

So I got my Other Music order today. Opened it to see an LP I ordered and a note that says "unfortunately both Jay Reatard 7's are out of print." I'm out of luck. Dang.

Sorry to be a gloater to the people who couldn't get one, but I think this is the best single yet. Great packaging and "Always Wanting More" is so good - it's sad and pretty and exuberant all at the same time.

No preorder for #4 yet. Actually, Matador hasn't even announced it. Someone on another board I visit found that image hidden on their website.
The artwork is Jason Reatard and Bradford Cox of Deerhunter. I guess it's significant because they're covering each others songs.

I snagged a copy, but with major headaches. They told me I couldn't order it because it was a duplicate transaction - a duplicate of the one that got cancelled earlier. I had to get a friend to put it on their card.
I'd like to go on record as saying that I hate Matador Records and 80% of the other bullshit records they put out.

I never had a chance- even once I did get home, the internet wasn't working. I internet-know a guy who works in a record store- if he can manage to get even one for himself, he said he'll try to get another for me, but I'm not optimistic about that either.

To Everyone That Ordered Today,
To start off with, we are deeply sorry about how messed up everything got with the Jay Reatard pre-order. There were a number of frustrations and mess-ups along the way that made ordering this record insanely difficult. It initially got put up too early, and those that ordered it early ended up not being able to re-order during the regular time. The first orders were deleted, but their cancellation wasn't processed in time. Coupled with the slow server speed, a lot of people who signed in very early ended up empty handed.
To make up for this, and make it fair for all of the people that want to order the record we are going to re-start pre-order Tomorrow, 7/15 at 3PM ET. All orders from today are getting cancelled. I know it's even more annoying to go through all of this again but we will work incredibly hard to ensure that there is more room on the server to accommodate traffic, and make sure that we don't have any more "FRAUD" notifications for people that already ordered.
Once again, we're going to do pre-order again Tomorrow, 7/15, at 3PM ET at matadorrecords.com/store

I think there are only going to be 400 copies of the last single, so I doubt I'll even bother trying on that one.

Well, that's just ridiculous. It's one thing to handle a preorder kind of badly (see: the recent Gaslight Anthem mess- after all the initial chaos, the blue version is STILL available for purchase anyway ::)), but it's another to mess it up even more badly after things have apparently been resolved. It's only going to get crazier for them tomorrow.

I mean, I don't know much about computers and the internet but I'm guessing that if one of your problems was that your server couldn't handle the traffic, canceling the preorder twice and getting people mad about it so that everyone is acutely aware of exactly when it's going on probably isn't the best way to dissipate that.

No, it's not. Like many folks around here, I find myself to be really loyal to certain labels that consistently put out a quality product. Matador is not one of those labels. For every Jay Reatard 7" they put out, they will also issue an LP of weepy indie garbage. Once this singles series is over with, I will illeagally download anything they ever put out again and make it a point to buy the records from the artists while they are on tour. The major indie labels are becoming worse than the major labels at this point, because they're amateurs when it comes to conducting business.

There are a lot of good bands on Matador; or at least, bands I like. I recognize they've released some garbage, but most labels have.
You're right in that they've conducted business kind of amateurishly in the past (e.g. MoB Single Series flop, recent Jay 7" mess), but I don't think it's fair to project that onto other indie labels. Saying that indies are becoming worse than majors seems absurd to me.

Got my single today. You're right, the Deerhunter cover is pretty good. I was worried after the atonal mess you'd posted earlier. Nice looking piece of wax, too.

Agreed. And although the cover art sucks, the vinyl itself is cool. #6 is very plain-looking by comparison.
