Saturday night in the City
« on: September 18, 2008, 09:03:46 AM »
I'm going to be in NYC this weekend, visiting my little sister. Also, my oldest friend will be in town from London. I say oldest friend, he's actually younger than I am, but we've been friends since 1987. "Longest serving friend" just sounds weirdly militaristic. Wordplay.

So, we're looking for something to do Saturday night. My sister is not a big going-out-and-dancing-til-4am person, so she's no help. Our general plan is dinner-bar-club. Since many of you live in the City, I was seeking recommendations of places to go. Nothing particularly expensive or overtly trendy. Just places laid-back, with eclectic jukeboxes and beers that aren't fourteen dollars.

Any ideas will be well appreciated!

If you're around the Upper East Side, I'm playing a show at a laid-back bar called The_Underscore on First Ave.

I'm a solo act with live electronics, looped guitar, keyboard, samples and vocals, and a video presentation.

I take the stage at 7PM and I'll play for an hour. The bar is one of the cheaper area bars (if you can call $5 beers cheap) and it's situated in a proximate location to a bunch of restaurants/clubs/other bars. So your options will be open.

Perhaps see you around?

That's generally a great site, but it tends to miss random things.

Samir, my favorite laid-back bar is ACE Bar http://www.acebar.com.  It's in the East Village.  They have skee-ball, a jukebox and a mausoleum for vintage lunch boxes.   I think a pint of Guinness is $6.  It's a place where you go to socialize with your friends, not to be seen.  Hence the reason why I've seen David Cross hiding out there.

Can't help on the clubs-front, but ACE Bar is close to the Lower East Side, where the stretch of clubs and s hit-shows are never ending. I could tell you places that are popular, but I can't vouch for their character.

Food-wise:

1) Breakfast at the Clinton Street Bakery is well worth the 1-2 hour wait if you go after 11:00 a.m.    Also, a bagel at David's Bagel (19th street and 1st) is a must for the bagel connoisseur.  http://www.clintonstreetbaking.com/bakery-where.php

2) Dinner is too tough a call without knowing if you're a vegetarian or what you consider expensive.

    a) I personally get giddy over the cheeseburgers at the Shake Shack, as well as their cheap Brooklyn Ales, milkshakes and outdoor dining in a park setting. Don't be intimidated by the long line, it's actually quite efficient.    http://www.shakeshacknyc.com

    b) If I was going for taste and not atmosphere, I'd head over to Pearl Oyster Bar.  An appetizer, wine and a lobster roll, will set you back $50-$60 a head.  The guff you take from the waiters is worth it.  http://www.pearloysterbar.com/

    c) For overall value and taste, I'd go to Lombardi's for some chianti and pizza!   Again, a long wait depending on when you go, but well worth it.  It's touristy.  But there are somethings you just have to do, and pizza is one of them.  http://www.firstpizza.com/newyork.html

I'm a big Lombardi's fan as well. That's not a bad recommendation at all.

There's a couple of good bands playing the Lit Lounge.  Roadside Graves and Gutz.

Hey Samir. I will be doing stand-up on Saturday night, which also happens to be my birthday (and Omar's). I plan to go out for sodas afterward to celebrate; PM me if you are interested in a Coke.

Samir,

This is a great place for dessert. Sometimes a line, but worth it.

Have fun!

If you're interested in a play, I'd recommend Thomas Bradshaw's Southern Promises at PS122.  Be forwarned that some horrible shit happens onstage, but as a night of good theater, it's pretty unequivocally awesome, and relatively cheap.  There are reviews in pretty much all the major NY periodicals if you want some warning, or you could just ask me.
Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.

Well, if ANYONE happens to be around the Upper East Side, be a pal and stop by The Underscore (1733 First Ave) at 7 PM to check out my solo act (live electronics, looped guitar, keyboard, samples and vocals, and a video presentation.)

Drinks on me...as long as you're a Brimstead supporter.

Don't listen to him - he knows nothing about plays!
I really don't appreciate your sarcastic, anti-comedy tone, Bro!

That's true - I am actually pretty excited about the 9 to 5 musical.

So how was it, Samir?  You have fun or what?

Thanks for the recs everyone.
My pals from London - their flight was delayed three hours, so we had dinner and then they were ready to crash, so it was a lightweight Saturday night.
Did do Shake Shack, though. Well worth the 51 minute (!) wait. Also, pizza at Grimaldi's, walked across the Brooklyn Bridge, saw the street fair in Little Italy, Schiller's Brunch, saw the Alice in Wonderland statues..
Considering this was supposed to be a "Seeing family and friends" trip, we saw a lot of sights.
Now I'm back in Gainesville, in a seminar class. Party!
