it is no mistake that 2009 has been the year of fundraising.  im not expecting everyone to open their pockets (ok, maybe i am) for this thing strictly because im posting but i do feel an obligation to post.

from Henry Owings:

Hey everybody.

So I'm never one to make Chunklet a place for charity, but I feel really strongly about this, so please take this seriously.

Here in Atlanta, there's a guy named Bobby that's in the final stages of his battle with cancer. I've known this cat for years. Years. And has never been anything but a sweet, fun, awesome guy with a talent that was really the embodiment of the Atlanta music scene. Read his whole story here.

So with that out of the way, now there's the not-so-delicate point of telling you that neither he nor his family and friends are rich. Furthermore, everybody who has ever known Bobby wants to abide by his dying wish which is to have a "green funeral" near Conyers which'll cost around four to five grand. I know. Dying ain't cheap.

Anyway, if you've ever cared about the Atlanta music scene, please donate. If you've ever bought a Lids album, please donate. If you wonder why Deerhunter, Carbonas, Black Lips, Gentleman Jesse and every other band in Atlanta cares about BJ's welfare, please donate. Even if you have only a few dollars to contribute, please donate.

There's a benefit show tonight at the Drunken Unicorn (featuring the pre-Black Lips band Renegades doing a rare reunion gig) and the Carbonas (doing their final break-up gig) are doing a benefit at Club 529 on July 4th. That is, if you feel like getting something with the money you donate.

Also, Paypal funds are easy to transfer and remind me a lot of play money because you never really miss it if it was never in your pocket, so what are you waiting for? Do you really need that extra beer when a guy just wants to be put in the ground!?

Send paypal funds to henry@chunklet.com and we can all bury BJ together.

That is all. Thanks.
Henry O. (the Chunklet potato supremo)

Bobby passed on last night around 9 p.m.  Henry's request for donations has already yielded $1,200+.

You can buy his LP here:

super sad. i read that cl article the other day and it was really a heart breaker. didn't know him but really like the lp and the lids of course. the stuff with the gaye blades is sick too. definitely got a ton of respect for the guy for how he handled it all for sure.
