Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee with Jerry Seinfeld
« on: January 21, 2014, 12:28:11 PM »
I'm bringing this up here because Tom used to make fun of this show (I have to agree that it does sort of seem like it's just Jerry Seinfeld doing what he would normally do on a typical weekday afternoon). Has anybody seen the latest episode with Jay Leno? God, it's like the worst thing I've ever seen.

Ever do nothing and gain nothing from it?
Ever feel stupid and then know that you really are?
Ever think you're smart and then find out you aren't?
Ever play the fool and then find out that you're worse?

So are all the other episodes as far as I can tell, by the way.
Ever do nothing and gain nothing from it?
Ever feel stupid and then know that you really are?
Ever think you're smart and then find out you aren't?
Ever play the fool and then find out that you're worse?

I've watched a few, including the recent one with Patton Oswalt. I think Oswalt is great, but the show is sickeningly unfunny. It's produced like an Entertainment Tonight segment, and there's an atmosphere of forced hilarity that's just suffocating. Watching two rich guys pretend to laugh at each other's jokes is not my idea of a good time.

In a world where there's about 5000 options for watching or listening to comedians talk to each other, this is very near to the bottom of the pile. At least they're short.

For some reason, yes, I have seen the latest episode. After they talk so preciously about that shitty old car for like 10 minutes and it cuts to a profile shot of Jerry and Jay driving down the highway in it, I wanted so badly for there to be a sudden violet wreck as they smashed into a large SUV, tearing through the "hand-hammered aluminum body" and ridding the world of these gloating oafs.

While I enjoy some of the guests' conversations (Joel Hodgson, David Letterman) the production is painfully "artsy". All the tight close-ups and dripping sounds of the coffee make me physically ill.

Eh, I don't mind it. The Louis CK one was a bit of a letdown overall, but it had an animated segment of a story that Louis was telling that I thought was great.

i think theyre really interesting to watch.  the people who i thought would suck, suck.  the people who i thought would be cool were cool.  the don rickles one and super dave one are awesome.  jerry is clearly beyond the whatever in terms of being way too rich.  he thinks his opinions are pretty down to earth and real, but when he bounces them off some of less-rich or more-real guests, you just see their quick reaction.  jerry talks about how life is too repetitive without having kids and family to colin quin, colin quin makes a joke about it.  you can just see how no one can get through to jerry.  i am going to say its a fascinating show, but it is a bit of a downer.  its sad.

Overall I think the show is decent. I'm pointing out the Jay Leno episode as being really bad. Two things in particular struck me as awful:

1) The obvious product placement when they drove up next to the Acura and the stupid, stupid argument over who had ordered the first one.

2) The story about him skipping school that ended with his mom hitting him with a frying pan.

3) The story about doing stand-up in a mob club... where everybody there is the most cliche, boring mafia cliche.

The conversation made me wonder if these events happened the way he said they did or if his brain had been so polluted with comedy cliches that he just remembered it that way.
