John from Cincinnati

Just watched the first three episodes yesterday and enjoyed them very much (looking forward to viewing the fourth over breakfast today).  Of course, it helps that I'm a sucker for magical realism.  But I like hearing the cadences of Deadwood in the dialogue (though the obscenity/profanity is far less inventive), and I love the modern incarnation of Charlie Utter.  Plus there is a great sweetness to the thing, which is rare in these cynical times.

Am I alone in my fondness?

You are not alone.  People seem to be warming up to this show, even though the early critical response was that it was some kind of epic disaster and the worst thing HBO's ever aired (odd considering they aired Lucky Louie).  It didn't help that it premiered after The Sopranos finale, and the pilot isn't that strong.  I think people also forget that Deadwood didn't really take off until Wild Bill Hickock got popped (episode 4).  People need to trust Milch!

Also: I hope Milch finds a spot for Gerri Jewell in J from C.  She was so hilarious on Deadwood.

Yeah, but it doesn't matter too much, because it makes sense for him to be wooden and opaque, coming alive only when he's surfing/skateboarding.

I was more impressed by Rebecca de Mornay's extremely forced rage when she's yelling at Butchie in ep. 3.  Also Barry's scenery biting in ep. 2 was a bit much.  But I can be very forgiving of such flaws when I like a show overall.  I was so damn pleased yesterday to find myself enjoying it.  I'd been putting off watching it for fear that I wouldn't like it, which would have made me cry since I liked Deadwood so much.

Well, all I can say to that news is, "Thank God." I've been trying to give this show a chance, but it's been pure torture. When every scene appears to be weird for weird's sake with no understandable forward progression or hint that any of it will add up to anything that remotely makes any sense, the viewer can't help but feel frustrated. That's how I felt, anyway.

Does this mean Milch will be able to finish up Deadwood sooner? I hope so.

Powers Boothe said in a recent interview that the only window of opportunity for the cast to film those Deadwood wrap-up films was this summer, so unless they are filming now, it doesn't look good.

Why the knocking of Lucky Louie is was actually funny unlike some other HBO shows from the past Arliss or that train wreck 4 old crows & the city

Crap.  I had a feeling this would happen but was hoping HBO would have the guts to give it more of a chance.  Spoiled brats:  they're too used to success.

To be fair, this shit was marginally better than Carnivale.

Carnivale was good.

Lucky Louie was the opposite of funny.  It was like some show that should have followed Married ... With Children on Fox circa 1990.  Some flashes of promise, but mostly dire and unfunny.  Pretty much a total misfire.  I guess it was slightly better than Arli$$.

I seriously doubt they'd cancel it midseason.  That would be unprecedented for HBO, wouldn't it?  I'm guessing they are probably feeling burned by Milch on this one though.  Unfortunately they seem to be desperate for a huge hit and maybe less willing to take chances in the future.

I still have a lot of reservations about this show and I'd be just fine if they yanked it tomorrow, but last night's was my favorite episode so far even though it was fairly uneventful.   Lots of weird, head-slapping Milchian dialogue.  Everytime that kid opens his mouth it's a disaster though.
