It'd be a shame if they didn't finish off the season.  I can get used to sub-par performances: Robert Iler, Jamie Lynn-Sigler, and Steve Van Zandt were always awful, and never improved, but I got used to them.  After a couple of seasons, they didn't completely take me out of the story the way they used to.

Then again, that the weaknesses of the JFC cast are found almost exclusively within the central family and the title character, it's not surprising to hear the show is probably screwed.
It's a bummer because Ed O'Neill and Luis Guzman were crushing it, son.

Ed O'Neil is the only thing that is keeping my attention in the show.

Ed O'Neill all the way, although now Charlie Utter and his sidekick Paul Ben-Victor from THE WIRE THE WIRE THE WIRE are proving to be entertaining.

So I watched about 2/3 of the first episode last night. I was thinking about it today, and was wondering: is the "John" guy supposed to be like an angel or god or something, and the Luke Perry character the devil or evil force?

I ask this because there was that opening scene where Luke Perry is like "I've been working on this family for 25 years" or something like that. Did the dad make a deal w/ the devil for surfing powers, but ended up with a bum knee and junkie son (which is what always happens in those deals)?

I'm probably not going to watch any more of this show, so it won't be spoiling it for me. Am I close?

Oh, and that junkie surfer: did they cross-breed Gary Busey with Sawyer from "Lost" or what?

Now that's more like it!  For the first time this feels like something I can get excited about, rather than watch out of obligation.

The Cissy/John scene was fantastic and sure as hell explains a lot.  Just when I thought Milch's pet phrase "whipping [his] skippy" couldn't get any creepier.

I lifted this from the AST board; my thanks to f34rfulsymmetry for posting it:

I just saw this, but you're wrong: Robert Iler always did a great job at playing a surly teenager (once he turned into a surly teenager around season 3 or so), and he really blossomed in the last couple of years, especially those final 9 episodes.  Steven Van Zandt was great with the comic relief stuff, and luckily (or purposefully) they didn't give him anything too dramatic.  Jamie Lynn Sigler... well, she seems nice.
