Portable turntables that don't suck?
« on: August 09, 2015, 01:07:46 PM »
I know little about turntables, especially portable ones. I have heard from several people that Crosley portable turntables are garbage.

First of all, is that true? Second, if I wanted to buy a portable turntable, can you recommend a brand and model? I have no intention of using it to digitize, so USB is not needed.

Thank you, FOT community! There is no group of people I trust more when it comes to questions of music and general taste. As for questions of sartorial elegance or social graces, I'll go elsewhere.

Everybody please calm down. I did not mean to tear this community apart. In order to save the board and everyone's feelings, I am withdrawing my question.

Crosley turntables are indeed garbage for the most part. I'm not aware of any portable turntables currently in production that are noteworthy. Some record stores carry old stereo equipment. If you have one near you that does you should ask how often they come across old portable turntables. You're likely to come across one at an antique mall or estate sale, but it'll likely be anyone's guess how lovingly cared for it was and/or if it needs any maintenance. You can find old portable turntables on eBay, but the shipping fee will likely add on to the total cost substantially.

TL;DR VERSION: Check with a record store to see if they have/try to have old portable turntables in stock.
