Life imitates art imitating life...

"Mother 13" fans, meet "FUTURE 86!"

http://www.observer.com/2007/bar-band-hits-big-time-sorta-meet-untroubled-troubadours-1-800-okcable?page=0%2C0

Corey Harris-worthy quote: "All the original music clubs are starting to die, and you’re seeing more and more clubs more interested in whether you can bring a large crowd and not whether you’re good or not,” Ms. Samborsky said. “So there is a commercialism that’s necessary for developing yourself as a band. Going grass roots is a really hard way to go now.”

It reminds me of when Gavin Rossdale from Bush was tapped to be a talking head regarding the demise of CBGB, and he said, "Where will young bands get their start in New York City now?"  Where indeed, Gavin?  Where indeed?   :P

Now write me a receipt so I can tip on outta here...

Hmmm, there are approximately TEN THOUSAND music venues "in and around the New York town," I think these young bands can find a place to play.

Regarding the article, I am opposed to the author's use of "spunky" as an adjective. For obvious reasons.

But she's so spunky!  I mean, look at her dress!  The way she stands in front of that aluminum siding makes me want to say, "I am woman hear me roar"!  ...I bet she compares herself to Cyndi Lauper all the time

BUT, I question this part: "It seems some people resent getting a catchy song stuck in their heads after repeated, unsolicited airings"
I mean, how far from the truth are we trying to get here?  Whenever I hear that Empire Carpet jingle, I wish I had a loop pedal just so I could hear it over and over again and again!

Really, though, I wouldn't worry about bands.  If they're really good enough and can stick it out for the love of the game, they'll eventually find an audience somewhere.  Hopefully if awesome bands are smart enough, they'll stay away from venues that attract the type of crowds that somehow enjoy bands like Future 86.

That article was hilarious. I loved how sarcastic the writer was. I also enjoyed the list of former band names (Pretty Suicide? Really?).

And this quote:

“Look at Jewel,” added Mr. Nimmo, the guitarist. “She had that album, Pieces of You. That record sold millions and millions of copies, but they won’t pick her up for another album.”

This band has just given me the name for my new post-ironic, indie-funk fusion band

It'll be a smash emma. Just keep it "post ironic" and the ultra-cool indie music reviewers will be crawling on their knees. It'll be so good, no one will have to even listen to it before they know they love it.

Speaking of not listening to things before reviewing them.....

This starts off as a great slagging of Black Crows, then becomes a "woe-is-me" sob story. It's kind of like sitting on Santa's lap, and finding out it's really your creepy uncle. Oh well. I'll sit through Black Crow bashing though, no matter who is holding the bat.

Ikea pack furniture in it. Gehry has made furniture from it. Now architects are shaping spaces with it. Is there any limit to the creative re-use of corrugated cardboard? With its unique physical consistency, its decidedly axial strength, and its deadening acoustic absorption, corrugated cardboard has many inherent qualities. As such it was the perfect material for this particular sound installation: Mafoombey.
Made from 720 half square sheets of 7mm thick corrugated cardboard, stacked in 360 layers, this cavernous sound space is set within a 2.5m cube. As a space for listening to and experiencing music, the initial concept for the design developed from the architect’s ambition to create a strong spatial intensity and a distinct internal atmosphere. With an irregular free-form interior set within a regular cubic volume, the object has a profound duality. Made from one material it also has an implied solidity that strengthens the architect’s distinction between inside and out – a distinction that is heightened when the full acoustic ambience is experienced from within.
Cutting the cardboard took three working days, and assembly just one. The structure sits under its own dead weight, without any fixings or glue. And, for those of a technical persuasion, a simple calculation reveals that the combined compression of the 360 layers of cardboard is 20mm over the 2.5m height, or an average of 500ths of a millimetre per sheet. All services are integrated within the stack, including cable runs and apertures for the six-speaker surround sound system.

What would the acoustics be like? I would think it wouldn't be as good as they say.

You sit one inch from the tip of a cardboard cone. You would seriously have, and I'm sorry to say this, an orgasm.
