This is really late notice.  I play guitar with Future America.  We're playing tonight at The Scene in Glendale, CA.  This is basically the bassist from the Tokeley's band that he asked me to join later on, so it's like same bass and guitar sound, but all the songs are about having sex with a hangover and doing pills (in other words, I don't write the songs).  It's fun!  LA FOT reprazent!  Here's my e-mail I sent out.

People!

I play guitar...ahem.... I shred axe in Future America, this country's greatest post-ironic cawk-rawk (pronounced "calk ralk") band since Johnny Rotten's Sex Clash.  Please join us for a GOOD SHOW this Saturday night at The Scene Bar in Glendale!  We are playing with the awesome Crystal Antlers and tight-as-a-onesy garage rockers Candy Apple as well as whimsical-girl-thing Balloon.  We are playing later, (11:30 I hear...) but these other bands are good for real and would be good to drink alcohol while listening to, so come out!  Drink a lot!  We will sound good!  And we won't play really early and then have everyone miss us like we did at that one Ponce De Leon show at The Scene.  Hear our new hit songs "Can't Get You Outta My Bed" and "Nap Time".  Then nod your head to the old classics "Cool Out' and "Sex Yurt".

DO IT!!

The Scene, 806 E. Colorado St., Glendale, CA
$5.  Show Starts at 9:30 pm.

Emma - did you win?

I won the first round, which means (I think--they've been really vague about things) that I get a bit of money (!!!!) and published in the magazine . Which is great. If I win, the only difference is I get more money (!!!!!!!!).

The next round that I'm in is the "semifinals," which starts (they said) either feb. 25th or in march sometime. I'll post the date when I know.

Thank you so much to everyone that voted! I felt a little silly about posting it here but everyone was super nice about it, and I think you guys were one of the biggest reasons I won at all. You are all really really really great people.

John Junk,
I really enjoyed your bands music! I think you would really get along with some friends of mine. They're in Charlottesville, VA, and are called The Falsies. Also, I'll add you, in case you ever come back East to play.

satu 2.23.08 RISD Taproom -- Providence

This was a notoriously bad venue to play way back when. They've relaunched it since then and it may be better now. my knowledge of this goes back to an interview MTV did with Sonic Youth. They were asked what the worst show they ever played was. They said, "The Rhode Island School of Design [tap room]." This was early in their careers and apparently it was in the midst of finals so no one showed up—which is a crock. No matter how busy anybody is, you can always make time for a show. I sure as hell did.

The last time I saw them play in Providence (circa 2002) they still held a grudge. Thurston Moore asked the crowd, "Anybody here go to Art School?" Followed by "BOOOOOOOO!"

Dania, I will make an effort to go. I work until 8 but trust they won't go on that early.

I'm giving a couple of talks.  The first one is this Friday the 22nd at this conference at the CUNY Grad Center.  It's about human rights in Mexico.  The second one is at NYU on Monday the 25th and I have no idea what I'll be talking about or why they asked me.  They offered money and I was like, OK, I can come up with something.
Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.
