So a friend of mine is working with Habitat for Humanity in Miami with two other people.  They are staying at a church - a church with bars on the windows.  There's no phone they can use in the church.  They've been warned not to go outside, but how bad can things be, really?

They see a pay phone on a street across the church parking lot.  Immediately after they get there, the police drive up.  They tell my friend that he and the others must be buying drugs because there's "no other reason white people would be in this neighborhood."  The cop then says to my friend and the other male in the group, "We would have found your bodies a couple of days from now."  Then he turns to the female in the group and says, "I don't know WHAT they would have done with you."

He then insists on driving them the 50 feet back to the church.  Regardless of whether this guy was exaggerating, it sounds like a skeery place to me.

Duuuuuuuuuude.

Miami's a big city. Do you know where they were? Downtown Miami is pretty sketchy, and some of the homeless people in that particular area are pretty aggressive -- banging on your car windows, bitching about how kids never seem to carry cash these days, et cetera, et cetera.

"Historic" Overtown is supposed to be pretty bad, but there haven't been race riots over there for a while now. I read that Overtown was kind of like Miami Beach several decades ago, but the town was pretty much ripped apart by the overpass built through it. It was called "Coloredtown" back then, and white people weren't afraid to go to the jazz clubs located there. But the Design District is adjacent to Overtown, and the Rubell Collection is right by it, which is something I recommend all visitors to Miami should check out. There's this Charles Ray sculpture there that is worth the price of admission. Trust me. It gave me truly epic lulz.

Speaking of cabfare, what would a ride from Jersey City to Manhattan be, roughly? Just curious. I hear cabfare is dirt cheap in AMERICA.

Once you're in Manhattan, the bus at Port Authority will put you at Maxwell's way faster than the PATH. I guarantee it. (I used to work at Maxwell's.)

Forrest, you're right, but if Laurie's scared of Washington Avenue, imagine the trauma of Port Authority, parts of which are still reminiscient of Taxi Driver even post-Giuliani time.

Crimestick, I'm sure other FOTs could answer exactly, but cab fare over the state line ain't cheap.  Cab rates in NJ aren't standardized like in NY, but my guess would be $45 plus tip and toll.

Laurie, I take the F train a lot, and while I have been stabbed on 1,890,000 separate occasions, my 9/11/07 "Best Caller of the Night" prize retroactively saved my life.

And there are lots and lots of cabs lined up by the PATH.
Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.

I really don't appreciate your sarcastic, anti-comedy tone, Bro!

Perhaps this is a time in which Mr. Reatard should be in our thoughts and prayers.

I was already going to have to duck out of work to try and catch JR's set. It is with a heavy heart that I must bow out of this one as well.
