Excited for The Thin Red Line but not excited because I have to buy a new bluray player because my year old one won't play new blurays and the updates don't work. Any recommendations on a good one between about $75-$150 that will last a while and play everything?

I don't get why a year old player wouldn't play everything. One of my players is a 1st gen Insignia that doesn't even have a network connection and it plays everything I've thrown at it. There's a firmware update for it to download and burn to disc but I haven't updated it because everything works. My guess is that's just a faulty player.

Everything you could buy at a big box store will work with everything. I picked up a Philips about a month ago that does Netflix streaming as well. It goes on sale once in awhile at Target to get you under 150. I think I paid 120.

Make sure you update the firmware once you get it plugged in. A new update came out a few weeks ago that probably won't be on the player yet, but before the update Netflix was unusable and now it works great.

Coming in October (all on blu-ray as well):

Paths of Glory
House
The Magician (Bergman)
The Darjeeling Limited
Seven Samurai blu

I'll reiterate for anyone who missed the House thread that the director also made those Charles Bronson Mandom commercials in the 70's.  That will give you about 1/10 of an idea of the craziness you're in store for with this movie.

There was a clue in their newsletter today that confirms they're releasing a "New Hollywood" box set of BBS-produced films:  Head, Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces, Last Picture Show, King of Marvin Gardens, Drive He Said and A Safe Place.  I don't think any of them will be available individually yet.

Perhaps this news should be posted on all of the Mickey Dolenz threads as well.

No one's mentioned The Red Shoes?
It could be their best looking transfer ever (and I only watched the DVD)

Ordered the blu-ray as part of the B&N sale.  Can't wait to see how it looks.

Netflix is annoyingly lax in stocking new Criterions these days, among other areas where they're declining.  Neither this or the Black Narcissus blu-ray are available there yet.

To my untrained eye, both look amazing. Certainly much better than the pretty good earlier releases.

Can't wait for A Safe Place and Drive He Said. Do they usually have the box sets on Netflix though?
