I've got the chance to go see the Black Lips in Dallas this Thursday, but it will involve me going down early and probably going to the show by myself.  Are they as awesome live as I am guessing they are?  I'm 99% sure I'm going.

I saw this band at SWSW last year, not knowing anything about their offstage tom-foolery that seems to make them rawk darlings, and i gotta say: Completely forgettable and awful.

It could be that I'm turning the corner on my tolerance for obnoxious nogoodnicks, or it could be that they actually do suck, I can't tell anymore.

Speaking of the Black Lips, Minneapolis had a pretty eventful Sunday music-wise. Arcade Fire w/ LCD Soundsystem, Jay Reatard, Black Lips and some other pretty well known band I can't remember. That might be ho-hum for all of you close to New York but it's pretty crazy here in Minnesota. There's usually a good show but you rarely have to choose. I chose Jay Reatard and it was a pretty awesome 20 minutes.  Plus it was at the 7th St. Entry which is perfect for a band like them.

I've seen Black Lips twice.  Once in a small club and again in a bigger place opening for Dirtbombs.   They were considerably better the second time.  Neither time did they do anything dangerous or crrrraaaaazzzzzyyyy.  That band has some inspired stupidity working for it, which I have an affection for.  haven't heard about this chicken stunt.
I chose a free Deerhoof show over Jay Reatard last night.   Decisions, decisions.

I saw the Black Lips at North Six some time last winter.  They were moderately entertaining, but they played waaaaay too long.  In my book that can take a good show and move it right into the bad show category.

I saw Jay Reatard a couple of months back and he did about 25 minutes of scorching rock.  Perfect.

If a punk band is going to play longer than that they had better have a couple of tricks up their sleeves.  Mustaches don't count as tricks.  Bonafide crowd pleasing songs do count.
