Other podcasts or online radio shows of this ilk?
« on: October 09, 2007, 08:27:56 PM »
I'm a recent TBSOWFMU addict...and my long commutes are getting rather boring. I'm looking for suggestions for other podcasts or online radio shows you guys might be into that might be of similar tastes as Tom's. I guess that means smart/funny talk shows. I'll give anything at least one listen...

As for related podcasts, there's 7 Second Delay on WFMU, A Special Thing Radio, and The Sound of Young America.  I also personally listen to a lot of the book and movie shows on KCRW, The Speakeasy on WFMU, Democracy Now, On The Media, and This American Life, but none of them are anything at all like TBSOWFMU.
Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.

I enjoy Radiolab on WNYU. It's a really interesting science show that informs you on being human in surprising ways. Sometimes over produced but the subject matter eclipses these small annoying things.

Check out Wiretap, with Jonathan Goldstein! It is pretty awesome.

"Hi, Fred. You and the Little Mermaid can go fuck yourself. I told you to stay near the phooooooooone. I can't find those books, you have other books here. It must be in La Hoya. Call me back, I'm not gonna stay up all night for you. Buh-bye."

It's a little nerdish, but I like Studio360 -- if only for the recent interview Kurt Anderson did from a talk show within Halo. A lot of quotes of the guy saying "Yeah Kurt, it's interesting that you mention that, I -- uh huh, we better get out of here Kurt, those guys are shooting at us".

It's hard to find without having to pay for it, but I still enjoy the Ricky Gervais show.

Nothing tops or stops the Best Show. You'll be disappointed if you try to find something like it, because no such show exists.

But if you just need other entertaining talk radio/podcasts to distract you:

Guys with Feelings is a favorite of mine. Don't let Jeremy's name dropping of the show deter you. It's often very good with amazing guests. Even when it's awkward, it's great. The vibe and sense of humor is very different from Best Show. I imagine Tom wouldn't like it, but you might. It gets pretty self-referential so start with the earlier episodes and work your way up.

There's also
- Jimmy Pardo's "Never Not Funny"
- Jordan Jesse Go
- The Shit Parade Show
- Doug Benson's "I love movies" ... although he stopped making new ones.
- The Paul Goebel Show
- Savage Love podcasts (for pre-verts)
- The Cold Bath (not usually funny, but pretty fascinating)
- The Marc Maron show/Morning Sedition was the one Air America show I liked. Cancelled in 2006, so may be hard to find online. And there's a lot of outdated political and news talk. But the comedy is still brilliant.
- Greg Fitzsimmons show (briefly on Sirius)

I also listen to most of the podcasts mentioned in previous posts.

I love the Best Show just for the reason it's so long and funny

I drive for work and need something to take up the time.

I would suggest checking out the Definitive Word podcast on iTunes

I just got turned on to The Bugle (featuring John Oliver from The Daily Show) -- it's weekly, pretty damned funny, and free. There are a few too many cricket and monarchy jokes for the average American listener, but it's so good. It's what Wait Wait Don't Tell Me would be if it were more than just mildly amusing.

My second favorite radio show is "In Our Time" with Melvyn Bragg.  It's a BBC show, available as a podcast.  A bunch of eggheads sit around and discuss a topic.  The goodness of an episode depends on how interested I am in the topic.

Yeah, the definitive word is alright, if a bit jabber-jawed.  I'd recommend their other podcast, "Make it So", which I find to be free of anything other than a complete love of all things Star Trek.  You know, if you even barely like Star Trek, or if it's a fond memory from years past, as it is for me, then I think you'll like this podcast.  Two Englishmen, talking about Star Trek, all the various series.  And they're not obsessive, they've managed to distance themselves appropriately from the series, trashing the continuity and implausibility of it while still affirming their love for it, and they're fairly funny most of the time...A thinking man's Star Trek podcast, I like to think...or hope...having listened to all of them..
