The main downside to it though is that it's kind of a shitty podcast player, because the lack of a clickwheel makes it difficult to seek to or "rewind" portions long mp3s, such as podcasts. The teeny tiny popup playhead scrubber aint so hot in that respect.

That part does kind of stink.  It's not really "analog" scrolling, it just jumps between different chunks of the file.  You can let it play for a couple of seconds to change what those chunks are.  And once you've begun scrolling, you can move your finger to different parts of the screen-- you don't have to stay on the blue dot.

The iPod part of the iPhone is indeed, as they claimed, "the best iPod ever". That's the main reason why I wanted an iPhone, because I hate carrying 2 devices in my uncavernous pockets when I'm walking about town. also, only up to 8 gigs of music is not nearly enough space for it to function as a good mp3 player for me.

Someday I will begin to reveal some of my OCD tendencies that effectively make my iPod nano function as an infinite gig storage machine, where infinity ends either on the die I doe, or the day my nano does

For me, it's all or nothing.  Either I take my whole collection with me (and no iPod is big enough), or just what I'm currently listening to + a random selection of hits.

I'm getting way too geeky.  Next, I'll be talking about Doug's Applescripts and philosophies on encoding.

I have 360 gigs or so of music.  (Some music is at 256 kbps so it takes up more space.)

This is only a little north of 6,000 albums, which really isn't all that much as far as music obsessives go.  I've been to plenty of houses with walls of vinyl and CDs.

And yet, ever week Tom plays music I've never heard of.
