this is just silly.  It' not "nigh impossible" at all -

absolutely.  it's just a matter of cooking this recipe rather than that recipe...  And of course it's easier to cook plant based foods than it is animal based foods.  Forget about tofurkey and the like...  It hardly takes all afternoon to cook a good pot of lentils with brown rice, or any number of vegetables, which you can steam, sauté...   not to mention about a million ways to dress pastas with various sauces.  ....yep.   ::)

I had this all typed up a couple of days ago and didn't post it because I didn't want to seem dense.  I've stopped caring about that:

How the fuck do vegans sustain themselves?  And I'm not talking about getting enough protein, I'm talking about eating when you're not at home (or on the road, whatever the case may be)  It's got to be fucking difficult.  I'm thinking it might be impossible here in Oklahoma.

I gave up meat for lent a couple of years ago and it almost killed me.  I've never eaten so many bean burritos and cheese pizzas.

My girlfriend is able to do it... She weighs 95 lb.s  Unless you cook (and love cooking) it's nigh impossible.  She makes dinner sometimes and it usually tastes pretty good, but it takes her all afternoon.

I'm sorry for getting hot under the collar about this, but this is just silly.  It's not "nigh impossible" at all - I've been vegetarian for 20 years, and vegan for the last ten of them, and obviously not cooking myself every friggin' meal in that time; and if I haven't been personally weighing in on this, it's just that I'm a little tired of talking about it - especially around the holidays.  So please forgive me, also, for that.  But ultimately, it's a really simple equation: things to eat = everything except animal products, and it works really well for me.
 :-*

don't apologize. I get annoyed just reading the title of this thread.

non vegans need to stop weighing in on how easy or hard it is to be vegan.

I've been vegan for three years and the only hard thing about it is dealing with non vegans and their questions or opinions of veganism.

If you're genuinely interested in becoming vegan, I'd love to answer questions but if its just to look at me like some kind of curiosity then you can go fuck yourself.

Anyone here been to The Sunflower?
Should any of you vegetarians find yourselves in Northern Virginia, this is the place. (It's mostly vegan, too.)

Why is curiosity a reason to go fuck ourselves?

So I guess since I don't want to become vegan there's something wrong with me asking "Where do you get most of your protein? Do you rely mostly on beans or do you dig all the soy products that are out there?" and also "Do you ever crave meat? I had a vegetarian friend who went back to eating meat after years of having a craving for a handburger. I'm wondering if those cravings happen to everyone..."

So I won't ask those questions...

you're allowed to have your curiosity but you have understand that those kind of questions are not just curiosity. By having no intention of being vegan you're saying you have no intention of really understanding why we're vegan. Thats the problem I have.

So why are you asking these questions?  its none of your business how i get protein and asking if i crave meat is a way of undermining me. these kinds of questions are meant to make us look stupid because you don't think what we're doing is right.

so yes. i stand by my statement.

Meat, meat, meat, meat, meat, meat.  And cheese.  Also milk and ice cream.  MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.  Nummy.

Sorry.

Actually, it's really easy to get enough protein without animal products.  For one thing, we don't need half as much as we consume.  Americans overdose on protein; it's ridiculous.  I make a sprouted whole grain bread two slices of which can provide me with half the RDA of protein.  Last year, I went through a brief stretch of eating carefully, and just one or two small adjustments would have been required to make my diet completely vegan.  I like the things on the list in my first paragraph too much to have done that, however, and so then and now I prefer(red) to continue to live with my hypocrisy instead (hypocrisy because all the reasons for eating vegan make perfect sense to me, and I frequently feel evil for eating the way I do).

That said, gosh, so much prickliness from you vegan folks!  I'm sure it gets boring fielding questions from mystified meat eaters, but is this thread really so offensive?  Or is it just a straw/camel kind of thing?

edit:  Colin, I think the questions in this thread are prompted by people's thinking that this board is friendly enough for those who never felt comfortable asking the vegans in their lives what they want to know to think that now they finally have a chance to try to understand.  I have no doubt whatsoever that erika had no intention to be undermining when she asked if you craved meat.  I know if I asked it, it would reflect more a kind of wonder and respect that you can eschew something that I seem helpless to give up.  And how you can assume that people are trying to "make [you] look stupid because you don't thing what we're doing is right" just mystifies me.

Maybe I better go sit in the dark, too.

just because i say something isn't for me, doesn't mean i'm saying it's wrong for all people.

I don't mind the veganism, its the windmilling and kick-boxing that annoys me.

If I'm being an asshole for not want to slaughter and torture animals then I guess I am.

sorry if that confuses you.

I'm not looking to piss everyone off but frankly I'm sick and tired of people acting like I'm the abnormal one.

also, there may be some meat eaters out there who do genuinely look at us with admiration and respect and all i have to say to them is "what are you waiting for?"

everyone else, keep it to yourself. I don't ask you how you can enjoying eating dead things, so stop questioning me.

Colin, no one is calling you an asshole because you disagree with animal slaughter.

But I think telling someone who is merely curious about a very different lifestyle from their own that they should "fuck off" is incredibly unkind and uncalled for.

Aw, all this fighting on Thanksgiving, it's like the FOT are a real family!

If I can intervene here, although I do think Erika's inquiries are perfectly innocent, I also think context matters.  There's a real difference between saying, "I'm considering vegetarianism and can someone help me out with some questions or resources" and asking, "how do you guys manage that?"  By way of comparison, it would be pretty rude to ask a person in a wheelchair questions about their mobility unless you knew them pretty well, or to ask a gay person questions about their sex life, unless it was in some sort of fairly intimate or therapeutic context.

Though I do kinda think it's a little unfair that she/you is/are getting the brunt of a lot rage from a lot of other peoples' annoying questions.  And Colin, assuming that you're interested in promoting veganism (which you might not be), don't you think it would be more constructive to point Erika or others like her to a web resource, like TL recently did with me about vegans and Guinness (thanks for that, TL, BTW)?

Anyway I think I'm going to go eat an orange.  Feel free to ask me all about it later.
Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.

Thanks, Forrest.  I've been in a pretty good mood lately now that the show is over (though it might be transferring to an open-ended commercial run, everyone keep your fingers crossed) and I've had a few days off from teaching.  This is, like, the regular me.
