I know I'm the one who originally posited the possibility of a non-
AST-specific term, but if we start down that road, we could end up with a glossary that new FOT would have to study before posting.  Why formalize anything?  People will be considerate or not; even with a how-to manual on how to be a good little FOT, those who wish to offend will find ways to do so.  I'd rather fight my own battles that have to follow a bunch of rules that make everything cushier but more bland.

OK Sarah -- here's what I'm saying in different terms.

Please, everyone on this board, please know that if you insult AST, there are posters on this board that will take it personally. This individual poster is asking, to make it a more pleasant place for her, that the FOTs not insult AST every chance they get. If you decide to go for it, cool. But I'm gonna be pissed.

I didn't mean for my post to come across as a rule. It's a request.

Of course I know that, erika.  But, in defense of non-AST FOT (of which I consider myself one, despite the fact that I, relatively recently, registered on the  AST board), may I say that it's hardly true that "the FOTs . . . insult AST every chance they get."  I believe our lord and master Jason is the only one who does this regularly.  And, as far as I'm concerned, he could do whatever he wants even if he weren't god of the board.

As an AST guy who occasionally visits the FOT board I have to agree the ragging does get old. Even S&W hung up the Mawky Ramone bit once that got old. (edit: Although it never stops being funny)

But honestly, I have a hard time seeing where the criticisms come from. My only guess is that some FOT were turned off by the whole kerfuffle involving the previous AST poll. Otherwise, I find the two boards are rather similar, and there's no reason to be hatin'.

Most of the posts are from regulars, and most of the regulars are lovely folks to talk to. Whenever you come across posters who are real jerks, they also have like 12 posts to their name. They're barely representative of the board (just like I'm barely a member of the FOT board with my 20-some posts). Just some mutants who visit for a few weeks, spew their nonsense and leave.

As always there is the occasional douchey poster who is tenacious enough to stick with it. But I find they're way, way outnumbered by quality posters.

For new members I know the regulars can be kind of prickly at first. It's a defense mechanism to weed out the riff-raff. Way back when, my first few posts on AST were met with a few snarky comments. In hindsight I made some really dumb posts, so I had it coming. Instead of being turned off it just reinforced the idea that should get a "sense of the room" before becoming a regular poster.

Surely if even I'm sick of talking about AST on this board, the rest of you should be running out of steam.
As Tom would say, come on - this is America.

(I'm not really buying this new healthier attitude of mine, either.)

You know who I can't stand?  Vegan Ron Paul supporters who post on AST.  Andy, how about a high-stakes game of Jarts?

Aha, thanks.  Any reason for the name change?

Hey, I've already passed up five opportunities in this thread alone.

I'm not going to refrain from comparing something to something else because it might offend someone. When people disagree on AST it often results in arguments and insults, we had our fair share of that here in the past but I think for at least a couple of years we've all fostered an atmosphere where disagreements result in discussion and, at worst, zingers. I see us slipping from the latter to the former and I think the comparison is valid and I stand by it.

I freely admit I have ragged on AST but I assure you, for the most part, my tongue was firmly planted in my cheek when I did so. Even over the stupid asterisk incident, which I still think was pathetic, even when I was being serious I did my best to express my displeasure by trying to be funny.
When Captain Jack was banned from the show we all spontaneously joined in, Captain Jack's name was never to be mentioned again. Apparently there was some confusion as to whether this was sycophancy or a joke (it was both) but its fitting and telling that that discussion took place not here but on AST. As we all know it devolved into a shit-storm.
I could of course use any site where this sort of thing happens as an example, AST is just a convenient reference point with perhaps some residual asterisk ragging thrown into the mix. It pains me that I even have to explain this.

I'm not singling anybody out here, but people really are taking stuff way too seriously and being way too sensitive.

It has just occurred to me that nov 19th saw our five year anniversary. I can't speak for Tom but as far as I am concerned, and I was here from day one, this site, the membership card and the whole Friends of Tom thing was and is an irreverent take on fan sites and fan clubs. A unique extension of the grand human comedy that Jon and Tom weave and as fans of the show we are lucky to have it and should all do our best to keep it fun.

Without wishing to denigrate my forebears, there was a time when people were banned for disagreeing with the moderators political opinions or for not posting about Tom enough. Somewhere down the line we flourished into a pretty cool community, we send each other stuff, meet up and stay at each others houses. Usage and traffic has gone through the roof and god knows its not because I've done anything great with the site, which is after all just this forum. The success of this site is down to the people who use it and I fear that they will also be the ones who destroy it, at least with me around because if I did have any part in that success it's because I am a hands-off, laissez-faire moderator.
I am therefore horrified that anyone would think of me as "Lord and Master". I've only ever had to ban two people, and they really stepped over the line, I think I have only ever laid down the law twice (both times when I thought someone was being ganged up against and not because I agreed with them) and Tom has only ever asked me to delete three things (and two of them were by me). So there will be no new rules, nobody will be banned, no ips given out and no threads will be locked simply because somebody asks for it. I will step in if neccessary but there have been no rules except common sense during my tenure and it has worked pretty well, even if I do now have to remind you all of your individual responsibility.

I'm not fishing for compliments, so don't start. If you want to thank anyone thank Tom who pays for this site out of his own pocket, but to my mind (again I do not speak for Tom) the best way you can thank him is by stopping all this shit-posting.
Don't take things too seriously, discuss stuff instead of arguing and if you're going to put someone down at least try and be funny about it. Continue to make this forum the kind of place that attracted you to it in the first place and maybe one day I'll get around to finishing the mix tape.

Thank you for that post Jason. It was well thought out and nicely put.

I stopped the conversation early because I know it's not THAT big of a deal. And I know you may not be directly referring to me, but I don't think I'm being overly sensitive by asking politely that everyone consider the possibility of a troll being home-grown, or from somewhere other than AST. When people insinuate that the posters there suck, since I'm one of those people, I honestly feel like you may be referring to me or making some sort of veiled remark about those of us from AST who post here. I guess it's just about wanting to feel accepted here.

I really, really love this board, the people involved, and the Best Show on WFMU. It truly is one of those things that has come along in my life and can't be replaced, along with the community here.
