I'm Not There: starring Andy Milonakis as Soy Bomb
« on: November 25, 2007, 10:47:38 PM »
Attn: Dylan fans -- this movie is a blast.  First of all, it's amazing enough that someone made a movie inspired by a ghostly, unreleased Dylan track rather than churning out "Like a Rolling Stone: The Movie" or whatever.  But the scenes that use particular songs as set pieces (especially "Blind Willie McTell, "Ballad of a Thin Man" and "Going to Acapulco") brilliantly capture the spirit of the music with distincly uncommon creativity. I wasn't such a fan of Velvet Goldmine but Haynes really pulls off a high wire act here.  Not all of it works -- the Christian Bale stuff lapses into (bad) caricature and the Heath Ledger/Charlotte Gainsbourg, Blood on the Tracks divorce scenes are mostly (but not all) boring -- but there's usually a moment around the corner that pulls you back in whenever it seems like Haynes is losing the thread.  A movie like this coming along with, among other things, Stephen Malkmus providing Cate Blanchett's singing voice, is like a one-in-a-million shot, folks.  See it!

And no, I'm never going to get tired of that Andy Milonakis joke.

I forgot to mention: there's a total send-up of Joan Baez's interview in that Scorsese No Direction Home doc courtesy of Julianne Moore.

See, if I made a Dylan movie, I would call it "Can't Sing, Can't Dance, Can't Play Guitar: The Robert Zimmerman Story."

And that would be an appropriately ironic title, because he can actually do all three.
Very well.   :P
But seriously - I really want to see this.  I thought it was an amazing idea when I first heard about it, but I was also wary, so I'm glad to hear an FOT give it props.  That seals the deal for me.  Well...  that and Cate Blanchett.
I know I'm not goin' out on a limb here, but what can I say about my celebrity crushitude on that woman that isn't boring at this point, other than the fact that it's continued unabated for a decade, now?
I've even watched "The Gift" more than once, because of her - eww buoy...

Now write me a receipt so I can tip on outta here...

Not at all.  I could watch Elizabeth over and over again.  She was the best thing in Coffee and Cigarettes, too.  Well, her and RZA.
Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.

Elizabeth 2 (Not to Be Confused with Elizabeth II): Electric Boogaloo was not so great. That's a pity, as I was really looking forward to it. I love QEI's poetry and battlefield speeches.

I can't really tell if anyone actually liked this movie. it's boring sometimes but it's good?
is it really worth 10 dollars? i'm on the fence.

as for todd haynes, i liked far from heaven. the velvet goldmine was pretty, but that's about it.

Beth, I was talking about maybe two pieces of a very large puzzle that I didn't care for.  Actually, some of the Ledger/Gainsbourg scenes that I did like are among the strongest in the film.  It's absolutely one of the best films of the year and completely unlike anything else out there right now.

As I said, Velvet Goldmine didn't really do it for me like this one did.  Safe is the only other Haynes film I've seen and I consider that one of the best of the 90's.

Not to get all Larry the Perv on you guys, but the Velvet Goldmine really "did it" for me.
