I think that it was horrible to throw Laurie and Mike into a hate pit.

Laurie might annoy some people, and Mike might not measure up to Dave (in your opinion),  but they are a part of the show!  They are a part of what makes the Best Show the Best Show! 
If you love the show, then why would you say anything against it by putting down two people that love it too?   
FOT have one thing in common- We love the Best Show.
So why put each other down?  If we have something against a fellow FOT, let's keep it to ourselves and focus on the one thing that bonds us.

 I dunno. I have nothing against Mike or Laurie, but I kind of like the idea that Tom can't do anything about who you throw into your own hate pit. It's all your own.

I can't speak for Steve, but Listener T's applauding Laurie's Hate Pit status is a disgrace.  An FOT throwing another FOT in a personal hate pit is shameful.  Listener T should be decapitated at sundown.
