The "Real" Spike?
« on: February 04, 2008, 06:25:29 PM »
The debate as to who super-villian caller Spike is has raged for quite some time.

I believe I may have found a possible suspect.
His name is "Tony O.", he is a DJ for the Hudson Valley oldies radio station 950 AM, WHVW. This broadcasts out of Hyde Park, NY, which is in listening range of WFMU's Catskill relay, WXHD. Besides having an exceedingly nasal voice, he hosts a doo-wop show. It's called The Dungeon Serenade. This alone to me is proof enough.

Here is an MP3 sample (sorry for the lo-fi quality, this was recorded off of AM radio):

I could see him taking on both the "droopy" voice for TBS and this "oldies radio DJ" voice for his own show - there are reasonable similarities, at least to my ear.

The first time or two I heard Spike call in I thought he was a "dungeon master" in the sense of D&D.  Or was it PFT or someone who thought that?  Maybe both.  I used to fall asleep on airplanes to TBS (because it makes me relax, not because it's boring), so I have all of these weird half-memories of the show.  The whole Power Pop Pop-Pop saga in particular is like a dream to me.
Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.

I'm not ready to rule out him being dungeon master in both our universe and the Forgotten Realms

I found this website that enables you to type in all the personality traits of a person as well as their common sayings and idiosynchrasies.  I entered in all the data I could think of for Spike and came up with the following two results:

Google image search.*

*I wish you could actually do that, but I merely typed in "creepy" and "guy".  Sorry if I misled you in any way.

Interesting, EMM . . . !

From an old WHVW schedule (Oct, 2006):

Quote
13:00-15:00 "Tony-O's Doo-Wop Dungeon" A Doo-Wop show put together by a real expert in the field. Go ahead, ask him your toughest question, but don't forget to enjoy the great music.

ETA:
