Rastafarians believe that they will never die as long as they remain true and faithful to Selassie. When death does come, "it is always explained away by saying that the subject had departed from the chosen path of Rastafari, had violated some divine precept, and was therefore struck by the mighty power of Jah (Selassie) (Chevannes 203)". It does not matter whether death is by accident, sickness, or by the agency of man. Rastafarians therefore do not even attend funerals.

Journeys are taken quite seriously, if a Rasta were to stub his toe of his left foot at the start of a journey, which is a sign of bad luck, it would be enough to cause him to turn back and start again.

Rastafarian women are usually segregated from the men, particularly if they are menstruating, which Rastas regard to be an unclean state.

Yes, not at all kooky.

They got that directly from the Bible.

Which is why I stand by what I said any close examination of this belief system shows it's just a flavor of messianic Christianity. At the same time I agree with the other poster it really is more harmless than some of the other cults of the same nature by being so anti authoritarian and non hierarchical.

My greater point is the red, gold and green of the old style Ethiopian flag has been adapted into Rastafarian symbology and by influence into reggae music culture in general, and even more broadly into some segments of pop culture. Belt Buckles, tshirts, wrist bands, hats etc. etc.

so "reggae" pills, not that far off.

So, I've done my job and sucked ALL the comedy out of the bit
my work here is done.

my point was.. it's not really a "religion" & is by no means on the craziness level of say christian scientology
obviously from an athiest standpoint.. all "religions" are pretty batshit crazy. rastafarianism is just no zanier than any other (& even less in a lot of ways)

anyways..

I agree ackbar. Rastafarianism isn't much stranger than most denominations here in North America, at least not from my perspective.

Rastafarianism gave us reggae rage. Christian scientists gave us the Christian Science Monitor. I think there's a clear winner.

Christian Science and Scientology are two VERY different things, you shouldn't confuse the two.
I don't know why exactly you would claim it's not a religion if you agree it's a spiritual belief system.....(a set of beliefs about the spiritual world) no matter how you want to parse it there is no escaping the thing is what it is.

It's interesting... 5 percenters aka the NGE (the wacky afrocentric cult of HipHop) apologists love to make the same excuses for their group. Intellectually dishonest here buddy.

the nations of the gods & earths is not a religion either.. so i don't see this conversation really going anywhere lol
it really just comes down arguing the true definition of religion. i hope we can both agree they're not "organized religions"..
or we can just move on? ahah
