My favorite person in the crowd was the kid with the mustache and green shirt in the mosh pit.   His girlfriend piggy-backing on him around the crowd while running into other people was hilarious.

Why are we still using the term "mosh pit?"  What is this, 1982?

Why are we still using the term "mosh pit?"

As opposed to "the place where you go to get kicked in the head"?

I went to about a dozen haadcoah shows from 1986-88 and I never heard the word "mosh" until like 1991, regarding either a metal show or Lollapalooza, I can't remember which.    We called it "becoming one with the music*."

*Not really
Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.

In Boston, 1979-1984, people I knew just talked about slamdancing.  I didn't learn the terms "moshing" and "mosh pit" till later.

Pizza maker!
Pickin' up change!
Etc.
Seriously, though - in NJ/NYC, the term "mosh part" was in wide use (both ironically and non-ironically) for the inevitable slow-down or half time bit, at least as far back as '86.  People almost completely stopped using "slam" around then.
Now write me a receipt so I can tip on outta here...

Yeah, but wasn't the term "mosh" played out by 1987?

 Here's proof:

Dude - we're actually talking seriously about the word "mosh" - you've got nothing to apologize for.

I'm too old for that shit.  I went to the Black Lips show and fucked up my arm for 4 months just getting pushed into the floor by some gorilla.  I was like "Fuck this".

Weird thing is, most of you are too old for that shit too!

I was too old for that shit almost a decade ago, and now I'm getting into that shit again.  I think it might be an oncoming midlife crisis.

I'm 27 years cool and I prefer to leave the freakouts for when I'm home alone. Moshing, if you will, just looks dated and embarrasing.

I miss stage diving from the era prior to the security trench.
