Diablo Cody: Live in Person
« on: April 09, 2008, 09:37:11 AM »
Sorry that this is in Links. I didn't notice til it was TOO LATE!

I missed the mirth, music and mayhem last night because Oscar winner Diablo Cody was here giving a talk.

http://alligator.org/articles/2008/04/09/news/campus/080409_juno.txt

Some thoughts:

- It only took seven minutes for the S word to be dropped. (That'll be stripper, which, you may be aware, she used to be)
- College audiences will laugh and applaud anytime there's toilet mouth.
- Overall, I enjoyed her talk. She came off as someone who's still sort of bemused by all the attention and remains down to earth.
- No, she doesn't use phrases like "wizard" in every day conversation.
- There was a Q&A afterwards, alas not with Hamburger Phones but real stand-up microphones.
- Only one person asked about the dialogue in the film - the primary source of my dislike - and she shrugged it off and said "it's just a character!"
- She said that having a wimpy indie soundtrack was Jason Reitman's idea - rather than the "raw power of Patti Smith and the Stooges" that Juno professes to love.
- Some of the questions she got asked by crowd members, hoo boy.
- "As an actor, JUNO is exactly the kind of film I'd like to be in. Are you casting in Gainesville on this visit?"
- "What's your favourite graphic novel?" (Answer: 'Blankets' - this'll mean something to some of you)
- Best: one girl came up and said "You're an inspiration, you're the definition of cool" and then started crying.

I didn't want to call in the show without having been listening because: 1. Tom's trying to move away from the Juno hate and I don't want to revive it, and 2. I don't think I've earned the right to be someone who calls in with "Hi, Haven't been listening but guess what I did?" yet.

Nobody said "Honest to blog", incidentally.

If ever you want to gain some respect for someone famous, watch them speak and wait for the Q&A. The speaker will always appear like a genius compared to some of the mutants who ask questions.

She's going on a roller coaster trip I'm going on. I'll be spending 5 days with her.

Also, first post.

That's one long roller coaster!
Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.

Or a really slow one.

The director of Juo was on the Howard Stern show last week
says neither he nor her really got PAID off the success of the flick.

Damn shame if she doesn't make a nice payday off of this
who knows if she has another one in her.

I didn't read the article, but that's a pretty shabby green table cloth.

Eh, I don't feel too bad for her - she's going to make a whole career out of this. She's going to be a textbook case of someone who people are always going to throw money at in the hopes that she might poop out The Next Juno, even if every single movie she makes from now on is total garbage. I have no doubt we'll be seeing "From the writer of Juno" on movie posters in 2025.
I'm warning you with peace and love.

About 800 people attended the event to watch Cody sit in the hot seat with Mike Foley, UF journalism master lecturer, peppering her with questions - a set-up similar to Bravo's "Inside the Actors Studio."

The event was sponsored by Accent, Student Government speaker's bureau. Accent paid Cody $40,000 for her appearance.

I heard this was her big rant against the haters, so I checked it out. I wish for once some celebrity that gets dumped on by angry fans (Dane Cook, etc) would just say "Leave me alone. I'm sorry I tried to entertain you. If you don't like me, then just stay away from my stuff." But instead, Diablo Cody goes the whole "I HAVE 19 AWARDS AND MY SHOW GOT GREEN-LIGHTED SO HAHA!"

Best line: "I know my name is fake and that it annoys you. What, do you hate Queen Latifah and Rip Torn, too?"

Yes, Diablo Cody. I do hate those two people.

Queen Latifah was way cooler in her "Ladies First" Nubian Tongue African Queen Bee bull-dyke period.

This same exact thing happened to me when I saw that Fonz statue!
I really don't appreciate your sarcastic, anti-comedy tone, Bro!
