Hot Streak/Cold Streak

I'm kicking myself for not thinking of this earlier:

Hot streak--Elvis Costello 1977-1982

Cold streak--mostly everything else, with a good year here and there (1986, for example, was "King of America" and "Blood and Chocolate," two great albums; 1994 for "Brutal Youth" and "Kojak Variety.")

You could argue that his unwillingness to release the same kind of stuff over and over again is commendable (it is), but I don't think the quality is there.  Also, he's pricing himself out of having a younger fanbase, annoying everyone with the constant re-releases in different packaging, etc.

David Bowie is guilty of the same thing but it doesn't seem to have hurt his standing with younger fans.
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

Funny, I thought this same thing this morning.  Devo is another one with an incredible hot & cold streak.

I did not get to listen to the whole show last night.  Did anyone mention Public Enemy from 1987 to 1991? Granted, not the longest streak, but certainly one of the hottest. Four classic albums in about as many years.  I know some may argue about Apocalypse '91, that it is not like the previous three, but the album is damn tight when you consider the fact that James Brown's lawyers (and others) started administering beatdowns for sampling around that time.

I was going to suggest Eric B. & Rakim's first four albums if my phone hadn't been shut off, but man, that's a good one.

Jeff Conaway 1978-82 - Co-star of Grease, Two time Golden Globe nominee for Taxi, daily conversations with Tony Danza. HOT STREAK!

Jeff Conaway 2006 - Present.  Breakout star of Celebrity Rehab, Celebrity Rehab II, and what appears to be a trailer for the next Christopher Guest movie.

Danza was his wingman at Studio 54!  Now Butch Patrick is doing stuntwork on his couch.

Cold streak: horror films. There are two trends that have come to dominate the past few years, and neither of them are good: remakes of Japanese films, and "torture porn" (where a bunch of innocent people get cut into tiny pieces or have nails driven into their eyes). Ugh. No thanks.

Cold streak: Music journalism.
Its not just about there being no Nick Kents or singular journalists or writers. There might be a great talent pool, but now its mostly internet music journalism that favors the long-winded and the lyric quoting and embarassing magazines. Especially now that file sharing makes everyone think they are musical expert, musical journalism is very, very cold.

By virtue of sheer influence, no doubt.

How many kids born after Ian Curtis died are professed fans of Joy Division?  Quite a lot, I'd expect.  They've been post-humously pulling new generations of fans for almost thirty years simply because influential people talk about them (or copy them).

Pretty much the same deal with Bowie.

Public Enemy

Some could argue that Flavor Flav's hot streak is finally here. After being an idiot he has become a full-tilt moron and has a third season of a TV show because of it.

Get thee to Siamese Dream! Yes, a little too teenage angsty, but it saved my life last week waiting an hour to travel the last two lights to get into the Holland Tunnel. Wait, maybe that's an unfair situation to judge an album on -- anything with 45 guitar tracks per song would be appreciated at that point.
