It's no consolation to be the one guy who got eaten by a shark, no matter how cool or exclusive.

You only think this because you're not cool enough.

OMG, Emma, were you eaten by a shark?
Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.

Yeah, right, like we're really that enthusiastic about upstate New York.

Have you every wondered which part of the other side of the earth is directly below you? Find out using this map tunneling tool.

That is awesome.

Here's a map distorted based on where the 1.6 billion air passengers per year originate from:

But that includes domestic travel, so here's a more accurate map of international air travel:

A map of internet traffic circa 1993, pre-commercial internet:

A map of telecommunication flow between nations:

An interactive map based on travel time (this is a gadget, not an image, but worth clicking):

More men die of suicide than from car accidents? That seems surprising.

Men have double the suicide rate of women.  The risk gains as men age, particularly white men.  White men who are widows are most at risk.

I wonder why this is.

Looks like a strong correlation with overall population density.  Higher density regions (east of the Mississippi river) have more single women, so the matter is a wide demographic one.  I suspect they're including elderly people/widows.  Considering that eastern populations are older and that women live longer than men, it makes some sense.

In regards to the west, the median overall age has to be at least ten years younger on the west coast than east.  Odd social trends prominent on the west coast may be playing out here as well, such as concentrations of gay men or polyamorous relationships which men and women might justify differently.

This one gives me indigestion. Extreme northern bloat and extreme southern deprivation. Kind of like me, with my round tummy and my scrawny legs. Ugh. This map hits a little too close to home.

This is pure awesome web-sightedness. I had to run the simulator 47 times before I saw the first result with McCain winning.

This means, of course, that McCain is a lock.

If you earn under $150,000 per year, I thereby encourage you to begin burying your most prized possessions in a friend's back yard (your own back yard is the first place they will look.)

Congratulations, Tom, mid-level cardboard administrators such as yourself are about to get a whole lot richer. And that money will have some actual value through most of the winter! Spend it fast.
