Apatow Universe Threshold: Reached.
« on: April 24, 2008, 01:43:37 AM »
I'm willing to accept this Sarah Marshall thing is not a total piece of shit, but is it honestly going to be any better than Overboard or One Crazy Summer?  Honestly, I cannot see myself watching this movie.  Seth Rogan has a certain burly charm, but that Segel character is a whole lot of not attractive.  Seeing his penis is not a draw, and neither is watching his cracked-in-the-kiln mug for 2 hours.  Sticking him with the hot-stuff snob from That '70's show is six ways of wrong.  This movie is probably more mature than other shit movies, but why not just go see a good movie instead?

And I actually liked Knocked Up and Superbad!

That is all.

I'm sorry Jason Segel is not attractive enough for you, you snob.

I have no particular attachment to Apatow.  He works with some dubious people, and I've heard bad things about him taking credit where it ain't due.  Eh.

It's pretty good overall.   I'm a pretty big Apatow fan but you can probably wait for the dvd and not miss out on anything.

It's not your place to apologize for him.

I am biased and fell in love with Freaks and Geeks when it first came on the air. I was a junior in high school. I will continue watching Apatow movies as long as he keeps working with the cast of Undeclared and Freaks and Geeks.

Fun fact: Undeclared premiered when I was a freshman in college.

I, too, have loved the Apatow world since F&G and Undeclared. I've mostly enjoyed the films, and feel some sort of unconscious compulsion to see them. So I went to see FSM, and while I didn't think it was as good as KU or Superbad, it still managed to tease laughter from me. It's not a great movie or anything, but I laughed pretty much all the way through it. Russell Brand is a genius. His video for "We've Got to Do Something" is fantastic.

I think this is going to be a sleeper. I haven't seen it yet, but this looks like a movie that will be funny, but was poorly marketed. That sounds lame, but some films are great, but some marketer dept. can't make heads or tales of how to present it, so it comes across as being mediocre.

Apatow is really on top of a small empire now. It will turn out it's share of crap but for the most, I've liked it.

He has an unexpected social conservatism behind everything that I find unexpected and a nice alternative to the movies that are makin' mah baby dress like a harlot.

i've been hoping someone -- if not apatow, then someone else -- would put segel in the main role for a while, but i wish he weren't reprising the "painfully needy loser who is pathetically and creepily obsessed with his ex" role that he carved out in freaks and geeks and undeclared.

Yeah, maybe I'm mostly responding to the marketing.  Holy Smokes those are some of the most annoying billboards ever.

The first week those billboards were out (before I knew they were even for a movie), an actress named Sarah Marshall auditioned for me.  I'm not such an idiot that I thought the ads had anything to do with her, though I did once think those faux-stenciled-and-spray-painted ads for the latest Rambo movie were wheat-pasted all over NY by a crazy guy I know who does a one-man show version of Rambo.
Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.

I love that double-take you do when you momentarily misinterpret an ad or any other item as something completely personal to you.

I had a cat named Casey, and whenever I saw a blurb about Casey Spooner from Fischerspooner showing up at some party, there would be a split second where I would think "what the hell is my cat doing with Bono at the Whitney?"

They're using the Under Siege 2 font!

I wonder what will  happen when I actually type Under Siege 2.

EDIT: Nothing, apparently.

Saw FSM last night and it's really good.  Segal is not quite the loser you would expect - he's completely broken up over his ex, but not obsessed with her in the way you might expect.

I laughed a good bit.  I liked it a good deal better than "Knocked Up," which I thought was just ok.

The nice thing about Apatow is yes the premises are silly and there's a lot of immature, gross-out humor, but he/they do at least try to make all of the characters at least slightly 3D.  That's a lot more than you can say for most things these days.

Plus who came up with the idea of Loudon Wainwright III as a sitcom actor?  I loved Undeclared...
I really don't appreciate your sarcastic, anti-comedy tone, Bro!

Yes, the advertising campaign was annoying. You think Apatow has any shred of control over that?

Watching the indie crowd try to find reasons to hate Apatow now that he's popular is embarrassing to me. If you didn't like it, you wouldn't watch it - but posts like these are really just attempts to start a "APATOW SUCKS, WHO'S WITH ME?" angry mob so you can rationalize your irrational dislike for it.
