Submitting Photos for Photo Show (I have a question)
« on: May 08, 2008, 02:43:24 PM »
So I'm submitting some photos to a photo contest with no particular theme other than "Summer" and they want me to include a "vita / statement" about me and my work.

How long should something like that be? Do you include biographical information or info about each piece or what? I don't have much to say other than I like to capture pretty moments with my camera...

I know nothing about this, but it seems like the vita I have seen in the past were almost like a chronological timeline resume type thing (and I've only seen them for my prof's in school really)

So, given the fact that I know nothing, here is what I would do:
A three or so line narrative about you that leans to the more capricious side (is that the right way to say it?).  Where yousay where you're from, kind of ellude to what you do for a living, list your pets and boyfriend by name and drop a few "When she's not baking or cleaning up after her boyfriend, Erika enjoys pampering her daughters
"

Just don't be too over the top with it.  Also, I guess it depends on the type of show (i.e. is it a community arts festival or some high brow art show)
Breakfast- I'm havin' a time
Wheelies- I'm havin' a time
Headlocks- I'm havin' a time
Drunk Tank- not so much a time
George St.- I'm havin' a time
Brenda- I'm havin' a time
Bingo- I'm havin' a time
House Arrest- I'm still havin' a time

I think around 200 words is good for the statement, and the bio can be either be that same length or be resume-like list, as Andy said. I've seen the statement written in the first person and the bio in the third, which is kinda disconcerting to me.

If you didn't go into taking these photos with a theme or series in mind, maybe ask yourself questions like "What kind of moments are these?" and "Why do I find them pretty?" and find the statement in there somewhere.
"Alright, well, for the sake of this conversation, let's say the book does not exist."

I try to keep my artist statements at a paragraph and the bio at a paragraph.  I sort of aim for 3 or 4 sentences for a bio.  Just who you are, where you live, where you "work" (make your photographs), any shows of note you've been in (biggest shows or latest shows).  If you  haven't had any shows, just say something interesting you do that informs your work.

Artist Statements are hard.  Usually I write like 2 to 3 pages about all the ideas I associate with the work, then somehow whittle it down to four sentences.  The easiest thing to do is just to write a statement specific to each project you do. I would think about the context of where the photos are taken -- are they taken in the city?  In the country?  Are they pictures of people or things?  Are you interested in light?  There's probably some stuff that you are consistently attracted to with your photographs that you may not notice at first.  You should look through your backpages of photos and see if you can pick up on any themes.  LIke "I have a lot of pictures of weeds that look pretty next to fire hydrants" or "there's a lot of cat-dander-floating-in-window-light "or whatever.  Try and think about what attracts you to these things and write it all down.  Then when you've written 2 or 3 pages, whittle it down to a paragraph!

I hate hate hate writing artist statements.  But it's a good excuse to reflect on and write about yourself.

I like to look at artist statements as just another genre of writing so that I don't think of it as bullshit.  I've actually got a lot of experience with them if you want to PM me, both as an applicant/recipient and as someone who's sat in on granting committees, and while theater and photography are obviously different, I'm sure there's some overlap.

All the advice so far is good, but here's a couple more cents: I also think it helps to be as clear and specific as possible, and to try and avoid any boilerplate "generic artist statement" language - i.e., like Junk says, the things that are specific to your taste, methods, passions, obsessions, etc.  I've found that often things that we tend not to notice about ourselves are often the most interesting and unique.  I've also found that it helps to be honest and cordial.  And if there is genuinely some larger social or cultural resonance to the work, then that definitely helps.  But don't fake it if there isn't.
Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.

I posted this on AST. Sorry for the hand-me-down...

I just found out that during Artscape (Baltimore's art festival) I get to do an exhibit before this band showcase/rock show thingy at this little venue. (Not quite a bar, but near a bar, and with an indie bar-like crowd)

For this one I get to choose whichever pics I want to exhibit. I'll probably pick 5 but I can do as many as I want.

It's really tough to choose though. If you all get a sec go to my bloggy site and tell me which ones you like. You can PM me. I'd appreciate the input! http://www.photoblog.com/crlygrl
