Has Matthew Barney been thrown into either the Hate Pit or been granted status as FWD?

Although not a fan of the Cremaster cycle or anything else, I was invited to a performance art event he staged last night and attended against my better judgment.  Here's the description:

"Regen Projects presents

REN

A performance by

Matthew Barney
and
Jonathan Bepler

Date: Sunday, May 18, 2008

Location: 12626 Rosecrans Avenue
Santa Fe Springs, CA  90670
Map of Location
Valet parking available*

Time: Doors open at 5:00
Doors close at 6:00 (performance to follow)

One night only

Please RSVP to renrsvp@regenprojects.com
*Transportation will be available leaving from the gallery, please indicate in your RSVP if you would like to reserve a spot.
"Ren" represents the first stage of the soul in its journey through the afterlife in which its "Secret Name" is revealed, and subsequently lost.  REN will reference the Cremaster Cycle, linking Barney and Bepler's earlier project to the iconography and mythology of ancient Egypt. REN will feature the return of the 1967 Chrysler Imperial and Aimee Mullins from Cremaster 3, a Southern California drum and bugle corps, ranchera singer Lila Downs, and British performance artist Mouse.  Performance is approximately 1-1/2 to 2 hours in duration.

WARNING TO ATTENDEES
The performance involves potentially dangerous industrial equipment and procedures. The risk of injury to you can only be reduced to a certain extent and cannot be eliminated. Access is granted to you entirely at your own risk. By attending the performance, you agree to assume sole responsibility for this risk and to release the producers and the production staff from all claims relating to any injury, damage or loss you may suffer or cause while on the premises.

RECORDING NOTICE
The performance will be photographed and/or recorded audiovisually. Your attendance constitutes your irrevocable consent for the producers to make use of such photographs and recordings, as they may depict you, for any purpose.

NO CAMERAS OR RECORDING EQUIPMENT ALLOWED"

So basically, we took a shuttle bus from an art gallery in West Hollywood to the "Ren Chrysler Dealership" in Norwalk, CA--about 45 minutes southeast of Los Angeles. After waiting on the roof of this car dealership for two hours--concrete, no shade, blazing hot, no water or toilets available, no concessions made at all to the number of handicapped people who were in attendance--the performance began.  It involved a character actor reading a diatribe about the "river of feces" that all souls must pass through, a car dragged several hundred yards by really pissed-off-looking laborers, and destruction of said vehicle inside the car dealership that resulted in flying debris actually injuring an onlooker.  Barney's status as FWD was cemented as soon as ambulances and fire trucks showed up to attend to the injuries, and people just milled around talking about being impatient for the after-party to begin.  I guess I probably should have expected a complete waste of time, but I think Barney has reached new levels of douchebaggery.

Why do people do these things? It makes me really regret my Art History degree.

Boy, do I hate Matthew Barney.

I'm not opposed to the Cremaster Cycle, I kind of thought it was cool. It was definitely something I had never seen before (I saw it my freshman year of college). Maybe I was a bit naive, but looking back on the images just now I still dig it.

I'm sure that Matthew Barney is, however, an FWD.  And that performance that you saw sounds terrible.

I got that story beat, but it's such a bad story and takes such a long time to explain, I don't even want to get into it.  It has more to do with an evil creep than a FWD.
Just skim this article: http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/article565980.ece

Don't feel bad about that degree.  It's not art history's fault.

Susannah, I almost had an art history degree as well, but when I went back to school the college I transferred into didn't offer one, so I chose literature (which runs alongside art history in many ways).
I loved art history while I was doing it, although I chose to focus on high renaissance venetian painting, so I only possess a basic scholastic knowledge of modern and performance art (i.e., modern art survey class).

And Junk, regarding that article: HOLY CRAP!

I don't know what happened to you specifically, but I pray that you were able to prevent being defecated on.

Eh - I don't know - I mean, it's not like he kidnaps random people from off the street - you've got to sign up for it and undergo psychological testing before he'll do it.  "Art," per se?  Maybe not, but I could see some interesting socio/psych theory coming out of his "adventures."
It disturbs me more in the "Oh, rich people with the money and time to pay someone to kidnap you while real kidnappings and abuse are going on all over - what are we gonna do with you?" sense.

Now write me a receipt so I can tip on outta here...

Yeah, pretty much.  I was sort of involved in one of these that was staged for VH1.  i don't think it ever got aired.  The thing that was creepy was that he told us it was going to be like a party with a fake-kidnapee in it.  So I'm thinking sorta like a margins-of-bondage type thing.  I told all these people I knew to go cause our band was going to play.  We get there and everyone is made to sit in silence in a hallway with a barebulb hanging over head in the middle of some warehouse and then for ten minutes Ponce De Leon performed for a VH1 correspondent with ketchup all over his head, tied to a chair, with people throwing crap at him.  It was all voluntary, but the dude in charge was very manipulative and misleading about it, and the VH1 guy was a smartass, and this caused people who I thought were normal to suddenly get all angry and be like "We gotta BREAK this guy!"  It's hard to explain, but I woke up in the morning feeling like I had betrayed every personal ethical/moral code I had.  Not that what I did was so horrible, it was just exceedingly decadent and creepy and a whole heaping load of "not my thing".  The worst was that I basically went along with it because I thought I'd get on tv.  Ugh.  Mid-twenties, you shan't be missed!

They should just move to São Paolo and experience the real deal.

This one was pretty awesome in it's utter stupidity:
http://nymag.com/daily/intel/2007/04/matthew_barney_the_bull_and_th.html

He has only a little of dignity left in my book, and that only comes from being with Bjork. I can't think that she'd have a kid with a total FWD. Maybe a partial WD?

I don't know why this shit makes my blood boil like it does, because it doesn't affect me at all. But it enrages me nonetheless!

That kind of reminds me of this:

EDIT: Jeepers, I just realized that the URL is cremasterfanatic.com. In case there was a misunderstanding, I just googled the song lyrics. I am not a patron of the website.

Don't you get it?  All this art is important because the people that make it are attractive.

"I think it's important for the pathetic fat slob to approach me, because when I approach the pathetic fat slob it just..."

ALSO:
"How great it is when an artist is willing to fail flamboyantly and then ends up making something extraordinary; what amazing things can happen in New York any time anyone wants to make them happen.  --Jerry Saltz"

Kiss Ass.

When I was in grad school I had figured out how Barney was a fascist, but that part of my brain has timed out from lack of use.

I just finished editing an essay called "The Neoliberal Auteur: Commodity Fetishism and Decadence in the Mise-en-Scene of Matthew Barney’s Cremaster 3". It's pretty good.

How does Barney fund his shenanigans?  Do you think he made enough from the success of "Cremaster," that he lives off of Bjork's dime, or that he is constantly awarded high profile and lucrative grants?  I'm really trying to figure it out.

I guess what bugged me the most about the event was that--regardless of his disclaimer in the email invitation I received--no one had any idea that the threat of injury was imminent.  There was no introduction, no words of explanation, nothing--the heavy machinery just sort of "appeared" and started bulldozing away.  Literally, people were jumping out of the path of destruction!--including two poor people in wheelchairs.
